The subjects of the research were 161 undergraduates of both sexes, aged 17 to 21 years, of the first year of the psychology major of a public university in the interior of Sao Paulo state. Results indicated that: (a) the subjects consider that the most important to be happy is friendship (52.8%), wealth (18.0%), and physical and mental health (11.2%), that is, aspects more related to the ethical dimension and forms of glory; (b) most subjects did not mention the public sphere, and thus manifested a certain individualistic and naive view, since it is impossible to achieve these values without considering the public ones; (c) as for friendship, the subjects consider it a way to adapt to a new reality, far from their families,  and/or associate its establishment with happiness; (d) the intention to have friends refers to a demand for the same gratification obtained in their families, such as emotional support, and thus the desired friendship is not grounded in reciprocity, because the other is seen only as a means to enable the satisfaction of personal interests; (e) regarding  health, the subjects argued that it is a vital condition to obtain happiness; (f) as for wealth, they expressed similar justifications, that is, although wealth is not sufficient, it is necessary to achieve the desires that can make them happy. It was possible to conclude that material factors (wealth) and factors linked to the establishment of interpersonal relationships are the ones deemed necessary for happiness. Keywords: Happiness; university students; values.

A recent development in Malaysia was the unprecedented rise in young Malaysians’ participation in the country’s social and political affairs, facilitated almost entirely by the Internet. This phenomenon caught many by surprise considering that university students in the country had been barred through legislation from active involvement in political activities for more than 30 years. Through a survey of 514 university students in a Malaysian public university, supplemented by interview data and samples of students’ writing, this study investigated in which ways Malaysian tertiary students are participating in the public sphere through the Internet. Following Hauser’s (1999) conception of public discourse as personal, interactive, informal, and distributed voices among the citizenry, we argue for a perspective that explains how online interactions in the friendship frame among young people represent their participation in the public sphere in the context of contemporary society.

This study is a needs analysis that aims to develop a psychosocial module based on a psychoeducation approach in order to strengthen the assertiveness, social skills, and psychological well-being of public university students in Malaysia. The specific objectives of this study were to identify the perceptions of university students on the need to design and build a psychosocial module, identify the constructs that should be included in the phase of designing and building of the psychosocial module as well as the support that has been received and the support that the students desire while on campus. This survey study utilized a questionnaire distributed to a total of 286 first year students studying at three public universities in Malaysia. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study showed a highly positive response from the students toward the development of a psychosocial module and the constructs listed in the questionnaire. Implications from this study can further solidify the constructs that should be included in the design and construction of the psychosocial module as well as identify the availability of the approaches, strategies, and support activities that have been received and desired by the students.

AbstractThis article seeks to elucidate the debate that was constituted by the press throughout the 1870s and 1880s in the Brazilian provinces of Paraíba and Pernambuco around the French model of parliamentary monarchy that contrasted with the republicanism of the USA. Taking over the role of public opinion maker, the press sought to highlight the issue of the Public Space since that distinct ways of dealing with it was considered in each of those idealized international political models. This article also mapped some relations that the newspapers analyzed betrayed between the debates on the Public Space and the rhetoric of modernity that accompanied them. Often the question of science and technique seemed to eclipse the dimension of conflict that is proper to the political universe and the public sphere, unifying the glances around a dazzle with the material improvements that the century promised. Keywords: Public Space, Formation, Press. From many disciplines come the calls for academic researchers and specialists to seek a greater participation in the public sphere. In a mass mediated age, these calls imply a greater participation with mass media sources and operatives. Many of us have had considerable experience with mass media, and the problems and limitations of these relationships are described. More effective strategies for making a public impact are described. These involve making passionate commitments of local organizations and groups, and working with them over many decades, to progressively develop trusting interpersonal relationships with their members, and increasing levels of trust and responsibility.

IntroductionEmpathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing. It is an important quality in the medical profession, since it is fundamental in interpersonal relationships with patients. Nevertheless, many studies have found that over time medical students (MS) become less empathic and more detached from patients. Objectives and aimsTo determine MS loss of empathy and to study the differences in empathy between MS and other university students who are not involved in healthcare.MethodsWe enrolled 244 MS (120 of the 1st year and 124 of the last year) and 125 other university students not involved in healthcare, in different universities in Rome and Foggia (Italy). They anonymously and voluntarily completed a socio-demographic questionnaire and Baron Cohen's empathy quotient test (EQ).ResultsWe found no differences regarding EQ total score between MS and other students, however there are few differences considering individual EQ items. In particular, MS really like taking care of others (P = 0.005) and they are sometimes considered to be rude, even if only they are only blunt (P = 0.006). We found no differences in empathy between first year and last year MS.ConclusionsIn our sample of Italian students, we have not found MS to be more or less empathetic than other university students, but there are some peculiar differences in empathy that make them better suited to the chosen course of study. Moreover, we found no differences between the different years of medical school.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Wernher von Braun and Mikhail Tikhonravov had the nature of their scientific roles shown through their connections to popular science media in the countries where they worked during the 1950s. Von Braun’s background was reflected through the edutainment of three Disneyland episodes, and Tikhonravov was unique in his association with Soviet popular science magazines. Their personal interests in relation to their work could also be shown through their interactions with the public sphere.

Occidental society has established a capitalist model of overconsumption. The 1998 Crawford, Gordon, Nicholas, and Prosser Conceptions of Mathematics scale was administered to 156 first-year university students at a large public university in the midwestern United States. The scale represented fragmented and cohesive conceptions of mathematics. The reliability estimated as internal consistency had a Cronbach alpha of .80 for the fragmented scale and .87 for the cohesive scale. Factor analysis of the intercorrelations indicated the same two factors of fragmented and cohesive as in the original and other replicating studies. Students' conceptions of mathematics in this study were comparable to those reported in the original study.
