This study aimed at identifying the chemical compounds isolated from the aerial parts and roots of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit. The compounds were isolated and purified by a combination of various chromatographic techniques including silica gel column chromatography, silica gel reverse phase column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography, semi-preparative HPLC and recrystallization. The chemical structures were analyzed and elucidated based on physiochemical properties and spectroscopic analysis. From the aerial parts of H. suaveolens, eight compounds were isolated and identified as quercetin 3-O-?-D-glucopyranoside (1), apigenin (2), sorbifolin (3), quercetin (4), kaempferol (5), genkwanin (6), rosmarinic acid (7) and methyl rosmarinate (8). Two compounds were isolated from the roots of H. suaveolens and identified as podophyllotoxin (9) and picropodophyllotoxin (10). Compounds 2?6 were isolated from H. suaveolens for the first time while compound 10 was isolated from the genus of Hyptis for the first time. The results of this study provided a scientific basis for the development of the medicinal value of H. suaveolens and have important theoretical significance for the chemical utilization of H. suaveolens resources.

Lavender essential oil from the aerial parts of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. was analyzed by GC-MS equipped with three capillary columns of different polarities, which were HP-1, HP-5 ms and HP-INNOWax. A total of 40 compounds were identified by GC-MS, accounting for 92.03% of the total essential oil compositions. Nineteen monomers were separated by column chromatography and improved preparative gas chromatography (pGC), six of which could not be retrieved from the NIST 14 (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA; 14th edition) library database. Fifteen compounds were identified for the first time in lavender essential oil. The improved pGC not only doubled the efficiency but also greatly reduced the cost.

AbstractRepeated column chromatography using Sephadex LH-20, silica gel (SiO2), and octadecyl SiO2 (ODS) as well as preparative HPLC column chromatography led to isolation of a new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan along with four known ones, gomisin L2 (1), L1 (2), M1 (3), and M2 (4). Their chemical structures were fixed based on MS, IR, and NMR data analyses. In addition, the stereochemistry of atropisomers, the absolute configuration of the axial chirality in a biphenyl structure, was confirmed by a CD experiment. The new lignan was named gomisin M3 (5).

From the wood of n-hexane extract of Willughbeia cochinchinensis, perform column chromatography on a normal phase silica gel with n-hexane: ethyl acetate obtained in 8 fractions. From GD-D and GD-F fractions, multiple column chromatography on silica gel was performed in combination with normal and reverse phase thin-layer chromatography, four triterpene compounds as epifriedelanol (1), taraxeryl acetate (2), ambolic acid (3) and α- amyrin (4) were isolated. Their chemical structures were determined by spectrocopic methods as well as comparing with data in the literature. These compounds were isolated for the first time from Willughbeia cochinchinensis.

The occurrence of syringin in eight out of ten investigated plant species of the subtribe Centaureinae (Asteraceae) was reported. The compound was isolated from aerial parts of the plants by silica gel column chromatography of methanol extracts. Contents of syringin varied from 0.001 to 0.1% of the dried plant material. <em>Centaurea bella </em>Trautv. appeared to be the best source of this compound (0.1% dry wt.). Syringin has been reported for the first time from these plant species.

Background and Purpose:: Patrinia villosa Juss is an important Chinese herbal medicine widely used for thousands of years, but few reports on the ingredients of the herb have been presented. In this study, we aim to isolate the bioactive compound from the plant. Material and Methods:: The air-dried leaves of P. villosa (15kg) were extracted three times with 70% EtOH under reflux. The condensed extract was suspended in H2O and partitioned with light petroleum, dichloromethane and n-BuOH. The dichloromethane portion was then subjected to normal-phase silica gel column chromatography, ODS silica gel column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC to yield compound 1. Cytotoxicities of 1 were assayed on HepG2, A549 and A2780 cell lines. The mechanism of apoptosis and cell cycle on A549 was confirmed subsequently. Results: A new impecylone (Impecylone A) was isolated from the leaves of Patrinia villosa Juss, and its structures were established using 1D, 2D-NMR spectra and HR-ESI-MS. Impecylone A could selectivity inhibit HepG2 and A549 cell lines. The compound could induce apoptosis of A549 and arrest the cell cycle at G2/M phase in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: Impecylone A is a novel compound from Patrinia villosa Juss and could be a potential antitumor agent especially in the cell lines of A549.

Column chromatography of the acetone extract of the lichen Cladina macaronesica (Sephadex LH-20, silica gel and silver nitrate-im pregnated silica gel) afforded eight triterpenes identified by chemical and spectral m eans. α-Amyrenone, lupenone, taraxerol, taraxerone and /so-arborinol acetate were isolated for the first time from lichens and (-)-usnic acid and five mononuclear phenolic compounds were also obtained, four for the first time as natural products. The possible transformation of perlatolic acid into these phenolic compounds is briefly outlined.

Tinospora crispa Miers (Menispermaceae) is a climbing vine with stems rich in warts. The plant is called Akar Seruntum or Patawali in Malaysia and is widely used for treating skin complaints, malaria, bacterial abscess, high blood pressure and diabetes. In the present study, the stems of T. crispa were collected from the locality and succesively extracted with petroleum ether, followed by chloroform and ethanol. The insecticidal active extract (ethanol extract) was  subjected to column chromatography of silica gel eluted with a gradient mobile phase containing hexane, chloroform and ethanol. Among the chemical constituents isolated are n-tetracosyl trans-ferulate and n-octacosyl alcohol, along with three known aporphine alkaloids; N-formylnornuciferine, N-acetylnornuciferine and lysicamine. All compounds were identified by comparing their spectroscopic data (UV, IR, 1H NMR, MS) with data from corresponding values in the literature. Isolation of n-tetracosyl trans-ferulate and n-octacosyl alcohol is reported the first time for T. crispa.

High-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) and silica gel column chromatography were used to separate and purify alkaloids from Chinese herbal medicine Euchresta tubulosa Dunn. The purpose of this study is to provide a system mode for rapid separation of alkaloids from natural products. In the experiment, the eluent of silica gel column chromatography was screened by thin layer chromatography (TLC) to obtain four components with different polarity. Then, the two-phase solvent systems of different components were selected and purified by HSCCC. Four alkaloids with relatively high content were obtained by this mode successfully, including matrine (28 mg), oxymatrine (32 mg), N-formyl cytisine (24 mg), and cytisine (58 mg). The purity was higher than 91% by high performance liquid chromatography–ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) and their chemical structures were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS). The results showed that the combination of HSCCC and silica gel column chromatography could make alkaloids from natural products separate systematically.

The compositional analysis of essential oil content in inflorescence and vegetative aerial parts of Elsholtzia blanda Benth. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae) growing wild in Meghalaya,North-East India were studied by GC and GC-MS. A total of 30 and 17 components representing 96.9%-98.3% and 92.6%-92.8% of the total oils from the inflorescence and vegetative aerial parts, respectively, were identified. Significant difference in composition of oils were observed between the two plant parts; 15 components detected in the oil of inflorescence were lacking in the oil of vegetative aerial parts, while two components present in the oil of vegetative aerial parts were absent in the inflorescence oil. Linalool was the major component in oils of both inflorescence (77.3%-80.2%) and vegetative aerial parts (57.9%-62.9%). Trans- linalool oxide (8.4%-9.9%), cis-linalool oxide (8.3%-9.3%) and 3,7-dimethyl-1,5-octadiene-3,7-diol (4.7%-5.1%) were however found in higher amount in the oil of vegetative aerial parts compared to inflorescence. For the first time the composition of oil in the inflorescence part has been reported in this communication while the oil from vegetative aerial parts containing linalool as the major component (44.9%) was although reported earlier but comparatively higher percentage of same was observed in vegetative aerial part (57.9%-62.9%) and inflorescence (77.3%-80.2%) in the present investigation with the plants from Meghalaya, India.

By using various chromatographic steps (silica flash, CPC, preparative HPLC), 16 sesquiterpenes could be isolated from an ethanolic extract of myrrh resin. Their chemical structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and HRESIMS. Among them, six previously unknown compounds (1–6) and another four metabolites previously not described for the genus Commiphora (7, 10, 12, 13) could be identified. Sesquiterpenes 1 and 2 are novel 9,10-seco-eudesmanes and exhibited an unprecedented sesquiterpene carbon skeleton, which is described here for the first time. New compound 3 is an 9,10 seco-guaian and the only peroxide isolated from myrrh so far. Compounds 1, 2, 4, 7–9, 11, 13–16 were tested in an ICAM-1 in vitro assay. Compound 7, as well as the reference compound furanoeudesma-1,3-diene, acted as moderate inhibitors of this adhesion molecule ICAM-1 (IC50: 44.8 and 46.3 μM, respectively). These results give new hints on the activity of sesquiterpenes with regard to ICAM-1 inhibition and possible modes of action of myrrh in anti-inflammatory processes.
