This paper is focused on the mathematical model of the Air Torque Position dampers. The mathematical model establishes a link between the velocity of air in front of the damper, position of the damper blade and the moment acting on the blade caused by the air flow. This research aims to experimentally verify the mathematical model for the damper type with non-cascading blades. Four different types of dampers with non-cascading blades were considered: single blade dampers, dampers with two cross-blades, dampers with two parallel blades and dampers with two blades of which one is a fixed blade in the horizontal position. The case of a damper with a straight pipeline positioned in front of and behind the damper was taken in consideration. Calibration and verification of the mathematical model was conducted experimentally. The experiment was conducted on the laboratory facility for testing dampers used for regulation of the air flow rate in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The design and setup of the laboratory facility, as well as construction, adjustment and calibration of the laboratory damper are presented in this paper. The mathematical model was calibrated by using one set of data, while the verification of the mathematical model was conducted by using the second set of data. The mathematical model was successfully validated and it can be used for accurate measurement of the air velocity on dampers with non-cascading blades under different operating conditions.

The primary concern of this paper is a single-blade air torque position damper used for the indirect measurement of volumetric air-flow rates by measuring the moment of airstream force exerted on the blade and the damper position. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the accuracy of the air velocity measurements and the adequacy of the damper mathematical model on the basis of the blade profile and the damper location in a duct system. The analysis was performed on the basis of the experimentally obtained results. Four different blade profiles (flat, V-groove, symmetrical airfoil, and non-symmetrical airfoil blades) were taken into account, as well as three different damper locations in the duct system (at the duct entrance, within the duct, and at the duct exit). Two blade orientations at the duct entrance were examined relative to the direction of air-flow (with front and rear mounting flanges). It was determined that the blade profile and particularly the damper location in the duct system affect the measurement accuracy and the adequacy of the damper mathematical model provided the blade angle of attack is less than or equal to 30?, i. e. within the range of a more open damper.

The low-pressure membrane applications are considered to be the most effective and sustainable methods of addressing environmental problems in treating water and wastewater that meets or exceed stringent environmental standards. Nevertheless, membrane fouling is one of the primary operational concerns that is currently hindering a more widespread application of ultrafiltration (UF) with a variety of contaminants. Membrane fouling leads to higher operating costs, higher energy demand, reduced membrane life time, and increased cleaning frequency. As a consequence, an efficient and well-planned UF process is becoming a necessity for consistent and long-term monetary returns. Examining the source and mechanisms of foulant attachment to the membrane’s surface is critical when it comes to the research of membrane fouling and its potential practical implementation. A mathematical model was developed in this study in order to predict the amount of fouling based on an analysis of particle attachments. This model was developed using both homogeneous and heterogeneous membranes, with a uniform and non-uniform pore sizes for the UF of simulated latex effluent with a wide range of particle size distribution. The objective of this mathematical model was to effectively identify and address the common shortcomings of previous fouling models, and to account for the existing chemical attachments in membrane fouling. The mathematical model resulting from this study was capable of accurately predicting the mass of fouling retained by the membrane and the increase in transmembrane pressure (TMP). In addition, predictive models of fouling attachments were derived and now form an extensive set of mathematical models necessary for the prediction of membrane fouling at a given operating condition, as well as, the various membrane surface charges. Polycarbonate and Polysulfone flat membranes, with pore sizes of 0.05 μm and a molecular weight cut off of 60,000 respectively, were used in the experimental designs under a constant feed flow rate and a cross-flow mode in UF of the simulated latex paint effluent. The TMP estimated from the model agreed with the experimentally measured values at different operating conditions, mostly within 5.0 - 8.0 % error, and up to 13.0% error for the uniform, and non-uniform pore size membranes, respectively. Furthermore, different types of membranes with a variety of molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) values were tested so as to evaluate the accuracy of the models for a generalized application. In addition , a power consumption model, incorporating fouling attachment as well as chemical and physical factors in membrane fouling, was developed in order to ensure accurate prediction and scale-up. Innovative remediation techniques were likewise developed and applied in order to minimize membrane fouling, enhance the membrane performance, and save energy. Fouling remediation methodologies included the pre-treating of the latex effluent, so as to limit its fouling propensity by using different types of surfactants as cationic and anionic, in addition to the pH change. The antifouling properties of the membranes were improved through the implementation of the membrane pH treatment and anionic surfactant treatment. Increasing the ionic strength of latex effluent or enhancing the membrane surface hydrophilicity facilitated a significant increase in the cumulative permeate flux, a substantial decrease in the total mass of fouling, and a noticeable decrease in the specific power consumption.

In this paper, two different types of biowaste composting processes were carried out – composting without and with bioaugmentation. All experiments were performed in an adiabatic reactor for 14 days. Composting enhanced with bioaugmentation was the better choice because the thermophilic phase was achieved earlier, making the composting time shorter. Additionally, a higher conversion of substrate (amount of substrate consumed) was also noticed in the process enhanced by bioaugmentation. A mathematical model was developed and process parameters were estimated in order to optimize the composting process. Based on good agreement between experimental data and the mathematical model simulation results, a three-level-four-factor Box-Behnken experimental design was employed to define the optimal process conditions for further studies. It was found that the air flow rate and the mass fraction of the substrate have the most significant effect on the composting process. An improvement of the composting process was achieved after altering the mentioned variables, resulting in shorter composting time and higher conversion of the substrate.

In the present work, the effects of different operating parameters on the performance of a gravity-assisted heat pipe-based indirect evaporative cooler (GAHP-based IEC) were investigated. The aim of the theoretical study is to evaluate accurately the cooling performance indicators, such as the coefficient of performance (COP), wet bulb effectiveness, and cooling capacity. To predict the effectiveness of the air cooler under a variety of conditions, the comprehensive calculation method was adopted. A mathematical model was developed to simulate numerically the heat and mass transfer processes. The mathematical model was validated adequately using experimental data from the literature. Based on the conducted numerical simulations, the most favorable ranges of operating conditions for the GAHP-based IEC were established. Moreover, the conducted studies could contribute to the further development of novel evaporative cooling systems employing gravity-assisted heat pipes as efficient equipment for transferring heat.

In the course of the study, methods for ensuring the centeringof particlesofbulkmaterialintheairflowmovinginthepneumaticductofthe seeder were investigated. To solve this problem, it is proposed to use a conical confusor. The aim of the study was to obtain the functional dependences of the movement of particles in a conical airflow guide (confusor) for the conditions of transportation of the sown particles on the basis of force analysis and to identify the nature of the movement of the sownparticlesinataperingairflow.Duringthestudy,todescribethemotion of particles in a vertical tapering pipe, a system of expressions was substantiated. The developed mathematical model of particle motion in a conical air flow, implemented in the MathCAD mathematical package, allowscalculatingboththeparticletrajectoryandthevelocityparametersof the air flow and the particles to be sown. The digital calculation results in the MathCAD program are in good agreement with the finite element calculations. The magnitude of the error in air velocity is less than 1%. The differences in the velocities of the transported particles in the calculation options do not exceed 7%. The installation of a conical guide helps tofocus the flow of particles in the central part of the narrowed air line. In this case, part of the particles in the central part of the guide will retain the initial longitudinaltrajectory.Theangleattheapexoftheconeandtheparameters of the particles affect the speed and angle of the tangent contact of the particle with theguide.

Sealing of the cavity formed between a rotating disc and a stator in the absence of a forced external flow is considered. In these circumstances the pumping action of the rotating disc may draw fluid into the cavity through the rim seal. Minimum cavity throughflow rates required to prevent such ingress are estimated experimentally and from a mathematical model. The results are compared with other workers’ measurements. Measurements for three different types of rim seal are reported for a range of seal clearances and for rotational Reynolds numbers up to 3 × 106. The mathematical model is found to correlate the experimental data reasonably well.

The air-jet texturing process, a purely mechanical means of texturing continuous filament yarns, is described. Industrial texturing nozzles are reviewed and categorized in two groups, either as converging-diverging or cylindrical type nozzles. A mathematical model is developed for the complex airflow in cylindrical type texturing nozzles, and experimental data obtained from various nozzles verify the flow predicted by this model. The mathematical model is also shown to be in good agreement with the data obtained from a modified experimental nozzle, which has a trumpet shaped diverging exit. Further experimental work with a scaled-up model of a typical industrial texturing nozzle is also reported.

The logistics and loading machinery is the typical hydromechatronics integrated system. How to solve the reasonable power match in the driving and lifting process of the logistics and loading machinery, we need to establish the mathematical model of the driving and lifting system, and analyze their control characteristics. Aiming at the load requirements for different operating conditions, this paper studies respectively the dynamic characteristics of the driving and lifting system. Through simulation and computation, the control methods and strategies based on the best performance are proposed. That lays the foundation for the optimization design of the logistics and loading machinery.

In the present study the examination of chip formation is focused on the primary shear zone, which is divided into two layers, and the variation of shear stress and temperature in time are given by two mechanical balance equations and three energy equations. All the five evolution differential equations are autonomous and nonlinear. The material characteristics are determined by an exponential constitutive equation. The mathematical model is suitable for the qualitative description of different types of chips, such as continuous chips and periodic or aperiodic shear localized chips, which is demonstrated by the general structure and typical solutions of the equation system.
