Technology plays a fundamental part in teenagers' lives since the majority of them are deemed digital natives having grown using communications, media, and digital technologies. As technology evolves, it becomes more available and more affordable to more young people. There are 104 countries where 80% of youth have internet connection. In Africa and Asia, there are more females online than males. Several educators, academics, and public health practitioners expect technology to be a remedy to all social problems or a cause for all evil in the world due to the ubiquity of technology. This chapter takes a skeptical outlook at technology by demonstrating how technology could be a cause of social problems and also be a part of the solution if used properly. The author attempts to refute the notion of technological determinism. This chapter aims to look at the role of media, communication, and educational technology, and their relationship with teenage pregnancy.

Abstract Adolescents in Panama face multiple challenges to their sexual health, rights and well-being such as high rates of teenage pregnancy (∼30% of all pregnancies), increased HIV infections and sexual violence. In the absence of sufficient evidence-based data and an ongoing debate in Panamanian society about how to approach adolescents’ health problems, the aim of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of different societal actors, namely governmental employees, NGO employees, academics, members from religious groups, teachers and parents. We conducted in-depth interviews (N = 34) which focused on the behavioural and environmental factors considered to influence adolescents’ decision making with regard to love, friendships and family relations. Furthermore, we explored how these stakeholders viewed the role of the education system, and the potential of including social–emotional learning (SEL) in the curriculum to provide skills and capacities, which could encourage adolescents to make better decisions and improve their well-being, in general but also in the context of sexual behaviours. Analysis revealed five central themes, i.e. perceptions towards gender roles and equality, adolescents’ love (sexual) relationships, capacity needs regarding prevention of risk behaviours and the role of education, comprehensive sexuality education in schools and the potentiality of SEL in the education system. The findings of the study can enhance understanding on the views of stakeholders regarding the factors influencing adolescents’ decision making, as well as regarding the possibilities of introducing SEL in the Panamanian educational curriculum.

Adolescence is the process that occurs after childhood and before adulthood (15-19) years. Teenage pregnancy is adverse for the mother and her child including low birth weight and high perinatal mortality. Complications between pregnancy and childbirth are the second leading cause of death among girls between the ages of 15 and 19 in the world. Violence against a pregnant woman by her partner is frequent. Adolescent mothers are among the greatest abusers of their children, and abuse can start from fetal life. They are also involved in the death of their newborns. Educational and community empowerment with a family response to educational proposals includes the issue of masculinity and the role of adolescents caring for their children, as well as examining the families' pleasure in the prevention and response to pregnancy.

BACKGROUNDTeenage pregnancy is a multifaceted problem which is influenced by numerous issues including individual, family, and community characteristics. Its consequences affect the health, social and economic wellbeing of the teenagers and their children. The attitudes and behaviors of maternal healthcare providers were an essential component of quality as they impacted both positively and negatively on how the clients, their partners, and families observed and experienced maternal healthcare. This study was conducted to determine the general attitudes of student nurses towards teenage pregnancy and also to determine whether socio-demographic characteristics of the student nurses affected their attitude towards teenage pregnancy.METHODA quantitative descriptive, cross-sectional study was done in 2018. A total of 87 randomly selected fourth year student nurses completed a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The study was approved by our local ethical boards and all ethical considerations were adhered to.RESULTSThe results of the study revealed that majority of the participants (93.1%) were single and attended church (90.8%). The majority of the sample was female (96.6%) between the ages 18–24 years old. The respondents' attitudes towards teen mothers were not affected by their relationship status, their age or gender or church attendance The results further revealed that the nursing students' had a moderately positive attitude towards teenage pregnancy. The only sociodemographic variable that affected attitude was the respondents having a teen mother in the family. The respondents with a teen mother in the family accounted for 29.9%.CONCLUSIONThis study adds to the body of knowledge on the attitudes of nursing students towards teenage pregnancy. The findings support the nursing curriculum that accentuates patient-centered care, reduce bias, and promotes professional values in Jamaica in order to deliver care to this vulnerable group.
