The rind of rambutan fruit (Nephelium lappaceum L.) has been reported to have a very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 7.74 μg / mL. The fruit contains  avonoids and phenolic . This compounds are potentially as hypolipidemic effect. This study aims to determine the hypolipidemic effect of 96% of ethanolic extract of rind of rambutan fruit in wistar strain male rats. This research method is the pre- and post-control group design. 25 rats were divided into 5 groups. Group I (negative control) were treated by a solution of 0.5% CMC-Na, group II (positive control) were treatedby cholestyramine 0.8 kg / kg, whereas group III, IV and V treated by 96% of ethanolic extract of rind of rambutan with a dose of 125 , 250, and 500 mg / kg respectively. hiperkolesterlemia induction is done by giving a high cholesterol diet and feed for 4 weeks. High-cholesterol diet consists of cooking oil, quail egg yolk, water, PTU and feed high cholesterol consisting of margarine and standard feed. Treatment of mice was conducted for 2 weeks. The results showed that the 96% of ethanolic extract of rind of rambutan fruit with a dose of 125, 250, and 500 mg / kgbw have antihyperkolesterol activity 21.39 ± 6.61%, 31.15 ± 18.15%, and 60.75 ± 8, 26%.Keywords: Antihypercholestrol, Nephelium Lappaceum L., High-cholesterol diet

Background: Hyperlipidemia or Dyslipidemia is the major cause of atherosclerosis1 and associated conditions. Low levels of high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are the major causes of increased atherogenic risk 1. Aggressive cholesterol reduction in patients with atherosclerotic disease is now the standard of care2. In addition to life style modification, patients with risk factors need lipid lowering drug therapy. The drugs available now do not reduce LDL oxidation, and oxidative stress associated with hyperlipidemia. In recent years, antioxidants have been subjected to epidemiological studies4 that have related their consumption to a reduction in the incidence of oxidative damage related diseases.Methods: Hypercholesterolemia was induced in rats by administration of high cholesterol diet for 30 days in standard rat chow diet. Rats were divided into four groups of six each. Group-I and II with intake of normal diet and High cholesterol diet respectively. Group III and IV are given high cholesterol diet along with Lutein 50mg/kg and Atorvastatin 5mg/kg orally once daily respectively. At the end of 30 days animals were subjected to overnight fasting. Blood samples were drawn by retro-orbital puncture for biochemical analysis. The animals were sacrificed after thiopentone injection and liver and aorta were dissected out and processed for histopathological study and biochemical analysis.Results: Lutein treated group showed even more significant reduction in TBARS levels than the normal control group and Atorvastatin treated group. The efficacy of Lutein in slowing down the atherosclerosis and fatty infiltration of liver is proved in this study.Conclusions: Hence the present study had shown significant hypolipidemic, antiatherogenic and antioxidant effect of Luetin in Hyperlipidemic rats.

Obesity has been linked with several comorbidities like cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and hypertension. Weight reduction is directly associated with the consumption of green tea. So, with this premise of background, we evaluated the potential of green tea consumption on obesity and serum lipid profiles in both normo- and hyper-cholesterol emic rabbits. Sixty New Zealand white rabbits (age: 6-8 months; weight 1.5-2 kg) were used for this experiment. Rabbits were randomized and equally divided into three different groups. Group I (control group) received 10 ml/kg of distilled water twice daily, Group II received high cholesterol diet twice daily, and Group III received high cholesterol diet along with green tea solution 10 ml/kg, twice daily for 90 days. Weight measurements and serum analysis were conducted on Day 0 and day 90. For the obtained data, SPSS analysis was performed (SPSS 21). A significant increment of body weight was observed in control (1.97 ± 0.12 vs 2.87 ± 0.21, p<0.0001) and high cholesterol groups (1.91 ± 0.23 vs 3.13 ± 0.31, p<0.0001) at Day 90 when compared with Day 0. Though the results were not significant, there was a reduction in the body weight in the green tea group (2.20 ± 1.47 vs 1.72 ± 0.22) at Day 90 when compared with Day 0. Consumption of green tea for 90 days resulted in weight loss and inhibition of the increase in the levels of TC, LDL, and VLDL. So, green tea can act as a natural food supplement for the management of obesity and dyslipidemia.

Effect of garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) extract on reduction of total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol ratio in hypercholesterolemic rats (Rattus norvegicus). Biofarmasi 6: 45-51. Garlic has been widely recognized as herbal medicine for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. The main bioactive compound, allicin, can influence cholesterol metabolism, reduce total cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol. The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of garlic extract on the reduction of total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol ratio in hypercholesterolemic rats. This research was an experimental research with pre and post-test control group design. The research used male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) with ±3 mounts old and ±200 grams of body weight. The rats were divided into two groups, group I and II; each group consisted of 15 rats. Before the treatment, all rats were induced by a high-cholesterol diet for two weeks, to get a hypercholesterolemic condition. Group I, as a control group, were induced by a high-cholesterol diet, while group II, treatment group, were also induced by a high-cholesterol diet orally by 0.432 grams garlic extract /200 grams body weight/day. The treatment occurred for 25 days. The data were taken before the treatment and after the last treatment, by taking the blood from orbital sine of rats which been fasted for 12 hours, and the level of serum cholesterol total and the level of serum HDL cholesterol were checked from both groups, then the results were analyzed with t-test. Based on the results, it could be concluded that the oral induction of 0.432 grams garlic extract /200 grams body weight/day for 25 days on rats, could not reduce total cholesterol, therefore the serum total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol ratio was not significant (p>0.05). Meanwhile, the decrease of total cholesterol in treatment group and the decrease of HDL cholesterol in both groups were significant (p<0.05).

This descriptive study investigates in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis (i) the extent of atherogenesis induced by cyclosporine A (CsA) or hyperlipidemia alone or in combination and (ii) whether thymoquinone (TQ), a known herbal antioxidant, offers protection against these effects. New Zealand White female rabbits were assigned to five groups of six animals each: Group I, control; Group II, CsA [25 mg kg−1day−1orally (PO)]; Group III, 1% cholesterol; Group IV, 1% cholesterol + CsA (25 mg kg−1day−1PO); and Group V, 1% cholesterol + CsA (25 mg kg−1day−1PO) + TQ (10 mg kg−1day−1PO). Lipids and oxidative stress parameters [Malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl] and aortic atherosclerosis were compared. CsA alone did not show a significant effect on either serum lipids and did not induce atherosclerosis. High-cholesterol diet induced atherosclerosis (45 ± 11% of the intimal surface of aorta was covered with atherosclerotic plaques). CsA and high-cholesterol diet increased atherosclerosis severity as measured from intimal and media lesions, but did not affect the extent of atherosclerosis. TQ decreased aortic MDA by 83%. It was also associated with reduced aortic atherosclerosis extend by 52% compared with Group IV. We concluded that (i) CsA aggravates hyperlipidemia-induced atherosclerosis and (ii) TQ attenuates the oxidative stress and atherogenesis induced by the combined effect of CsA and hyperlipidemia.

We examined the antioxidant effects of polyphenol/anthocyanin-rich potato (Solanum tuberosum cv. Shadow-Queen) flakes in male rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. The rats were served either a high-cholesterol (0·5 % cholesterol plus 0·125 % sodium cholate) diet, or a high-cholesterol diet containing a mixture of 243 g α-maize starch/kg supplemented with one of the following (per kg diet): 300 g medium purple potato (Shadow-Queen), 300 g white potato (Solanum tuberosum cv. Toyoshiro) or 300 g dark purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Ayamurasaki) flakes for 28 d. We analysed thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in the serum and liver, and antioxidant enzyme activities in the liver. At this dosage, TBARS levels in the serum and liver of the Shadow-Queen and Ayamurasaki groups were significantly lower than those in the control and Toyoshiro groups. The serum urate levels in all the flake groups were significantly lower than that in the control group. The hepatic glutathione levels in the Shadow-Queen and Ayamurasaki groups were significantly higher than in the control and Toyoshiro groups. The activities of hepatic glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase in the Shadow-Queen and Ayamurasaki groups were significantly greater than those in the control group. These results show that modulation of antioxidant enzymes and oxidative status in the serum and liver by the purple potato flake diet (Shadow-Queen) containing polyphenols/anthocyanins may play an important role in the protection against adverse effects related to oxidative damage in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet.

Hypertriglyceridemia or high blood triglyceride levels is one of the lipid fraction disorders associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Flavonoids has an important role as cardioprotection by lowering triglyceride levels. The flavonoids in water clover contain 10,71 mg of extract. This research aims to prove that flavonoids can increase Lipoprotein Lipase enzymes activity. True experimental study used design pre-post test control group design in rats. The sample was selected based on by completed randomized design sampling to be devided into five groups, the control positive (n=5) were only given normal diet, control negative (n=5) were only given high cholesterol diet and treatment groups with three doses (n=15) were given cholesterol diet during the 7 days and water clover extract that intervention during the 14 days. The results of this research can increase activity of Lipoprotein Lipase enzymes as an influence of water clover extract based on Paired T-Test, before and after treatment there was a significant different (p<0.05). Activity of Lipoprotein Lipase enzymes in the negative control group and third treatment showed a significant difference (p.< 0.05) based on MANOVA (Multivariate Analyses of Variance). Conclusions of this research is water clover extract affecting increase Lipoprotein Lipase enzymes activity significantly.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypercholesterolemia is an important predisposing factor of cardiovascular diseases. The underlying process is commonly associated with oxidative stress. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ipomoea batatas (IB) L tablet and Pandanus conoideus (PC) Lam extract against oxidative stress and lipid profile in rats. METHODS: This study used a pre- and post-test control group design. Wistar male rats were randomized into four groups consisting of seven rats each. The groups were control group, PC Lam extract 0.4 cc/rat/day (PC group), IB L tablet 200 mg/rat/day (IB group), and PC 0.2 cc+IB 200 mg/rat/day (PC+IB group). All groups were received high cholesterol diet for 4 weeks. The blood samples at baseline and the end of this study were used for the lipid profile, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) examination. The result was then analyzed with an Analysis of Variance test. RESULTS: There were significant differences in changes of total cholesterol, Low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, MDA, and SOD in the treatment group (PC, IB, PC+IB) compared to the control (p < 0.001). The decrease of MDA and increase of SOD were mainly found in the PC+IB group compared to the PC group and IB group (p < 0.05). The changes in lipid profiles were mainly found in the PC+IB group and PC group compared to the IB group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Administration of PC and IB combination is an effective hypolipidemic agent. This combination has superior antioxidant activity compared to the single-agent (PC or IB) and control.

Abstract. The main aim of the present study was to show the effect of bovineLactoferrin (bLF), an 80 kD iron-binding glycoprotein, its application on antioxidant esterase activities and 8-isoprostane changes in high-cholesterol-diet fed (HCD-Fed) rats. The 44 adult Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned into four experimental groups. They were randomly assigned into four equivalent groups (n = 11). The groups included the control group which was fed with normal diet, bLF group, the third group which were made hypercholesterolemia by being fed with high cholesterol diet, and the last group which consisted of hypercholesterolemia rats treated with bLF (HCD + bLF) for 4 weeks (200 mg.kg−1 per day wt. dissolved in 0.9% normal saline).After 4 weeks, the serum Paraoxonase1 (PON1), Arylesterase (ARE) activity and 8-isoprostane with lipid profile were measured. Upon treatment with the bLF, the decrease in LDL-Cholesterol (LDL-C), Glucoses, Triglyceride (TG) and Total-Cholesterol (TC) levels and an increase in HDL-Cholesterol (HDL-C) level were observed. The co-administration of bLf for 4 weeks had decreased the 8-isoprostane levels significantly (P < 0.001) (86.36 ± 7.1 vs 117.18 ± 8.62) when compared to hypercholesterolemia-induced rats. Also, the Atherogenic Index (AI) in HCD + bLF group showed a significant decrease as compared to the HCD group (P < 0.001) (0.37 ± 0.07 vs 0.57 ± 0.09). The results indicated that bLF was effective against oxidative stress by its ability to increase PON1 activity and reduce the lipid peroxidation in high-cholesterol-fed rats.

Abstract The hypolipidemic effect of an ethanolic extract from the roots and rhizomes of Panicum repens L. was investigated in rats suffering from high-cholesterol, diet-induced hyperlipidemia, and the phytochemicals in the extract were analyzed. The extract was administered p.o. in doses of 250 mg/kg/day together with cholesterol at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day for 7 weeks. The high-cholesterol diet caused a significant increase in total lipids, total cholesterol (TC), total triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and the atherogenic index, whereas the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly decreased. Administration of the P. repens extract (p<0.05) significantly reduced the rise of the serum levels of total lipids, TC, TG, and LDL-C, as well as the atherogenic index, whereas it significantly increased (p<0.05) the level of HDL-C. HPLC analysis of the phenolics and flavonoids in the extract revealed the presence of gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, chicoric acid, primulic acid, rutin, apigenin-7-glucoside, and quercetin. In conclusion, the P. repens extract was found to possess hypolipidemic activity in high-fat, diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats.
