This chapter talks about deterministic models as expressions of ecological hypotheses. These models are based on a deterministic equation or equations making predictions that can be compared with observations. The nature of the model ensures that there is no uncertainty in such predictions. Hence, the chapter first discusses the different ways that deterministic models have been used in ecology; identifying three main ones: theoretical, empirical, and simulation. It then outlines a few deterministic models widely used in ecology. Rather than attempting a comprehensive treatment of the subject, the chapter instead introduces a set of core functions that are widely used to represent ecological process across all subdisciplines.

The ‘Peronist Left’ has become one of the chief actors in the often violent drama of Argentine politics today. It is the object of this article to place the events of the more recent past, at least since the return of Peronism to power in 1973, within the framework of the development of the ‘Peronist Left’ since the fall of Perón in 1955. Obviously the article makes no claim to be a comprehensive treatment of the subject. Such a treatment could only be part of a much more extensive study of the Argentine working class and the Peronist movement. In particular, the article concentrates on an analysis of the political ideology of the different currents that have made up the ‘Peronist Left’ since 1955, whilst recognizing that this ideology must ultimately be seen in the far wider context of the social and economic development of Argentine society. The first part will highlight the main features of this Left in the 1955–73 period and analyze the main currents within it. In the second part of the paper the events of the last two to three years will be looked at within this context.

The following notes aim, in a tentative way, to discuss and analyze the source and nature of sovereignty in its relation to mankind, and to the institutions created and developed as a result of man’s desire for social order and peace. The term notes excludes the idea of an exhaustive or comprehensive treatment of sovereignty; the sole purpose in view is to direct attention to the wide-reaching importance of the subject and to suggest a line of thought somewhat different from that usually followed by publicists.

The chapter focuses on contemporary globalization and emerging regional cooperation initiatives in the context of economic development. The authors analyze the trends of the current globalization (new protectionism) and conflicts/contradictions between various forces involved in global economic integration. The chapter also investigates the trends, status, issues, and impacts of the de-linking project of the South initiatives (which can be seen in the forms of various regional blocks). It also provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject and recommends new perspectives on the potential developmental effects of regional cooperation and the implications of regional integration for global economic development.

Martin Robertson published the History of Greek Art in 1975, which has continued to hold its place in English language scholarship. It was the culmination of years of patient research that had started when he embraced the teaching of the history of the subject nearly thirty years earlier. Reviewers remarked on the way in which the book was both a personal study of Greek art and also a comprehensive treatment of the whole field. Through its measured structure and the grace and power of its style, it shows the author at the peak of his talent.

Alfred Russel Wallace produced his two-volume treatise, Geographical Distribution of Animals, the first comprehensive treatment with an evolutionary perspective, in 1876. His active interest in the subject, however, began three decades earlier. In 1848, he embarked for Amazonia to seek evidence for species formation by examining the relationship between the distribution and affinity of related species. A series of papers based on his discoveries in the following decade presented not only Wallace's theory of evolution but also his concept of the regional aspects of geographical distribution as the resultant of both physiographic events and the origin and extinction of species. These conceptual papers were all published before Charles Darwin's, On the Origin of species (1859).

The figure Genius in English literature has received attention from scholars from the eighteenth century to the present day, especially with reference to Spenser, Jonson, and Milton. Perhaps the most comprehensive treatment of the subject is that by Professor E. C. Knowlton, in a series of articles in the 1920s, tracing the appearance and literary use of the figure from antiquity, through the middle ages, to the end of the sixteenth century. As the substance of much of Knowlton's investigation is in his study of 'The Genii of Spenser' (1928), this article merits a statement of the author's purpose and procedure.

I feel greatly honored to have been selected by the committee that has planned this conference to discuss the papers of two such distinguished scholars as Professors Wandycz and Wereszycki. Most of you have already had an opportunity to read their essays, and I am certain you will agree with me that both deserve only the highest praise. In their comprehensive treatment of the subject and in their judicious interpretation of the facts, the papers reflect the superior scholarship of their authors. While praising these two excellent accounts makes my assignment to discuss them a very pleasant one, the task is, at the same time, rather difficult. Since the authors have said so much so well, what else is there to say? Fortunately, the subject is vast and complex, and a commentator can always find many facets of the subject which have not been covered in any limited treatment of the topic.

In this article, an introduction to a proposed more comprehensive treatment of the subject, I wish to discuss the contribution that the parabasis makes to the understanding and interpretation of Aristophanes’ comedies. The study of this part of the plays has in the past concentrated upon two main areas: firstly, its role in the development of comedy, including questions about its original position in the dramatic structure and its relationship to other elements such as the parodos and agon; and secondly, its role as the repository of Aristophanes’ personal views.1 I shall touch but incidentally on the first of these, though my argument will have some bearing on it; to the second I shall return at the end. My aim is to consider an aspect of the parabasis that has not so much been neglected as dismissed as non-existent: the relation between the contents of the parabasis and those of the rest of the play. It is generally agreed that the parabasis deals with matters that are irrelevant to the dramatic action, but I wish to argue that it has a significant role as the focus of the most important themes in the play: far from breaking up the unity of the play, the parabasis provides indications as to where that unity is to be found, besides giving hints about the meaning of the play and the nature of Aristophanic comedy generally.2

This volume of twelve chapters by multiple contributors is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject of muscular dystrophy and related disorders available to date. It is under the editorship of a worker in the field. Gross and microscopic pathology, findings on electron-microscopy, and the results of tissue culture studies are discussed in the first five chapters. Chapters VI, VII, and VIII deal with the clinical aspects of this and related myopathies. Findings in metabolic and endocrine myopathies, in polymyositis, and in congenital disorders are available for comparison. Chapter VI, which deals with the clinical aspects of human muscular dystrophy, is particularly valuable in its detailed exposition of the symptoms and signs in these entities.

Purpose Alternative data is a term describing the data exhaust that organizations, especially asset managers, are using to develop insights about companies to give them a trading edge. As the use of this data becomes more prevalent, it is critical that business leaders understand how this kind of data can be used against their organizations. This viewpoint articulates some of the steps they will need to take to do this. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used in this viewpoint is a review of recent literature covering alternative data and its uses. Findings This paper describes the different ways in which alternative data is being used and cites surprising examples of how this can make companies vulnerable or threaten their reputation. Research limitations/implications As an overview of selected examples from secondary sources, this paper is not a comprehensive treatment of the subject. Practical implications By studying the issues raised in the paper, business leaders can arm themselves with insights into the use of alternative data and mitigate reputational fallout from its use against their companies. Social implications A better understanding of how alternative data is being used can help protect both individuals and social organizations from being treated inequitably and increase transparency in the use of large and hidden data sets. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first treatment of the use of alternative data from the perspective of corporate reputation.
