In patients with both primary and recurrent ischemic stroke in its acute period the combined dyslipidemia with no probable differences was found which declared itself in an increase of general cholesterol, cholesterol of low den sity lipoproteins, cholesterol of extra low density lipoproteins, triglycerides and atherogenic factor at low concentrations of cholesterol of high density lipoproteins. There were no significant differences found between the indexes of lipidogram of different levels of severity in the primary ischemic stroke group as well as in the group of recurrent ischemic stroke, and no significant differences betweentheir same name levels of severity were found either.

Selective uptake of cholesteryl esters (CE) from lipoproteins by cells has been extensively studied with high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is only recently that such a mechanism has been attributed to intermediate and low density lipoproteins (IDL and LDL). Here, we compare the association of proteins and CE from very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), IDL, LDL and HDL3 to HepG2 cells. These lipoproteins were either labelled in proteins with 125I or in CE with 3H-cholesteryl oleate. We show that, at any lipoprotein concentration, protein association to the cells is significantly smaller for IDL, LDL, and HDL3 than CE association, but not for VLDL. At a concentration of 20 µg lipoprotein/mL, these associations reveal CE-selective uptake in the order of 2-, 4-, and 11-fold for IDL, LDL, and HDL3, respectively. These studies reveal that LDL and HDL3 are good selective donors of CE to HepG2 cells, while IDL is a poor donor and VLDL is not a donor. A significant inverse correlation (r2 = 0.973) was found between the total lipid/protein ratios of the four classes of lipoproteins and the extent of CE-selective uptake by HepG2 cells. The fate of 3H-CE of the two best CE donors (LDL and HDL3) was followed in HepG2 cells after 3 h of incubation. Cells were shown to hydrolyze approximately 25% of the 3H-CE of both lipoproteins. However, when the cells were treated with 100 µM of chloroquine, a lysosomotropic agent, 85 and 40% of 3H-CE hydrolysis was lost for LDL and HDL3, respectively. The fate of LDL and HDL3-CE in HepG2 cells deficient in LDL-receptor was found to be the same, indicating that the portion of CE hydrolysis sensitive to chloroquine is not significantly linked to LDL-receptor activity. Thus, in HepG2 cells, the magnitude of CE-selective uptake is inversely correlated with the total lipid/protein ratios of the lipoproteins and CE-selective uptake from the two best CE donors (LDL and HDL3) appears to follow different pathways.Key words: lipoprotein, receptor, HepG2 cell, selective uptake, lipid, cholesterol, binding.

Abstract Kaempferol (KPF) is a dietary polyphenol reported to have various beneficial effects on human health. However, its molecular mechanisms in regulating lipid and glucose metabolism are not fully understood. This study examined the effects of KPF on obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes in Tsumura, Suzuki, Obese Diabetes (TSOD) mice. The six-week administration of KPF decreased fat weight, serum total cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs); increased high-density lipoproteins (HDLs); and improved glucose tolerance. Additionally, KPF increased LDL receptor (LDLR) and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) gene expression and decreased serum resistin levels. These findings suggest that the decrease in LDL and the increase in HDL caused by KPF may be due to increases in hepatic LDLR and ApoA1 expression, respectively. Furthermore, it is possible that the improvement in glucose tolerance by KPF may occur via resistin reduction. These mechanisms may be parts of complex mechanism by which KPF improves metabolic syndrome.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to determine the dietary, anthropometric, blood-lipid, and performance patterns of university-level American football players attempting to increase body mass during 8 wk of training.Methods:Three-day diet records, body composition (DEXA scan), blood lipids, and performance measures were collected in redshirt football players (N = 15, age 18.5 ± 0.6 yr) early season and after 8 wk of in-season training.Results:There was an increase (p < .05) from early-season to postseason testing for reported energy (+45%), carbohydrate (+82%), and protein (+29%) intakes and no change in the intake of fat. Fat intake was 41% of energy at the early-season test and 32% of energy at the postseason test. Increases (p < .05 for all) in performance measures, lean mass (70.5 ± 7.7–71.8 ± 7.7 kg), fat mass (15.9 ± 6.2–17.3 ± 6.8 kg), plasma total cholesterol (193.5 ± 32.4–222.6 ± 40.0 mg/dl), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL; 92.7 ± 32.7–124.5 ± 34.7 mg/dl) were measured. No changes were measured in triglycerides, very-low-density lipoproteins, or high-density lipoproteins.Conclusion:Increases in strength, power, speed, total body mass, muscle mass, and fat mass were measured. Cholesterol and LDL levels increased during the study to levels associated with higher risk for cardiovascular disease. It is possible that this is a temporary phenomenon, but it is cause for concern and an indication that dietary education to promote weight gain in a manner less likely to adversely affect the lipid profile is warranted.

Currently, studies aimed at assessing the emotional state and cognitive processes associated with the processing of emotionally determined information in patients with ischemic stroke, as well as finding the relationship between them are particularly relevant, mainly for the subsequent optimization of the therapeutic process. In order to identify the features of the emotional state and cognitive processes, a group of patients with ischemic stroke in the acute period in the amount of 25 people was examined. It was established that in patients with a lesion in the anterior cortex, depressive states in the acute period of stroke are more pronounced. Patients successfully reproduce emotionally significant words in comparison with neutral words; an interrelation between the level of anxiety and depression was found, which indicates that these states are comorbid. But, in turn, the relationship of the severity of anxiety and depression with the cognitive processes of recognition and reproduction, as well as differences in mnestic and gnostic activity in patients with different levels of anxiety and depression were not identified. After the treatment with Semax an improvement was noted.
