TEACHER’S STRATEGIES IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION PROCEDURE TEXT

This study attempts to investigate the phenomenon which occurred in classroom setting dealing with teacher’s strategies in teaching reading. It was designed in descriptive qualitative research. The location of this study was MTs Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah Tembung and the samples were the English teacher and the students of IX-4 class who were selected by using random sampling technique. The data of this study deals with kinds of teacher’s strategies in teaching reading procedure text. The data were collected from the observation which occurred during the reading procedure text class and the interview with the English teacher. The data were analyzed by three stages : 1) familiarizing and organizing, 2) coding and reducing, and 3) interpreting and representing. From the data analysis and the data verification, it was obtained that the teacher used three strategies in teaching reading comprehension procedure text, namely activating background knowledge strategy, visualizing strategy, and questioning strategy. The strategies not only were beneficial to promote and improve students’ comprehension but also they encouraged the students to be active, enthusiastic, and critical readers.

The purpose of this study was to analyze what strategies the teacher used in teaching reading comprehension and how the teacher applies the strategies used in teaching reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were teacher who taught English at SMAN 10 Kota Bengkulu . This type of research is designed as descriptive qualitative research. To collect data in the study,  researcher used Checklist Observation, Interview as an instrument in collected data and documentation. The procedure of this research is by means of researchers coming and participating in seeing and understanding how the teacher teaches reading comprehension in the classroom. The results of the study found that the two strategies used by the teacher, Scaffolding and QARs (Question Answers Relationship). Scaffolding strategy students can develop ideas that can be read by students and make students confident in reading comprehension. QARs (Question Answer Relationship), the teacher is able to know the extent to which students understand what the teacher has given them and the limits of the students' ability to do assignments after reading the text that has been given. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher is good enough to implement this strategy in the classroom, but was slightly hindered by its application during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

This study aims at describing how the teachers teach reading comprehension of narrative text to the tenth grade students in Sibolangit and revealing the underlying reasons of why do they do that way. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design. The subject of this study were two english teachers who taught at tenth grade students of two SMA in Sibolangit they are : SMA Negeri  1 Sibolangit  and SMA RK Deli Murni Bandar Baru in academic year 2016/ 2017. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman data analysis technique. The  technique of collecting the data was recorded from the classroom process in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. The findings of the study show that most of teachers’ ways are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing teaching the knowledge of genre. The underlying reason of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension.  Keywords : Teaching,Reading Comprehension,Narrative Text.

The aims of this research are to find out whether the implementation of NoteTaking Pairs technique effective in teaching reading comprehension at junior high school. The method used in the research is quantitative method and the design is quasi experimental design. The sampling technique used in this research was random sampling. Two classes were taken as the subject namely experimental and control class. The data of test got from both experimental and control class was analyzed by T test formula. The result of calculation showed that t was 6.58, and t  with df  75 in account table the significant degree of 5% is 1.992. It means that t  is higher than t (6.58 > account table 1.992). The average of post-test in the experimental class was 81, while the KKM of English subject is 75. It can be concluded that Note-Taking Pairs Technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension at junior high school.

This study focuses on English teachers’ methods in teaching reading comprehension of procedure text. The main purpose of this study is to describe the methods used by English teachers and reveal the strengths and weaknesses of those methods used for teaching reading comprehension of procedure texts. The research was a qualitative case study. The participants of this research were two English teachers at one of junior high schools in Semarang  in the academic year of 2019/2020. In collecting data, several data collection instruments were used, including: interview, observation guideline and document analysis checklist. The findings showed that English teachers planned the teaching materials and strategies in advance. They also used various methods in teaching reading of procedure text. Both teachers almost used the same methods which were audio-visual method, scaffolding, grammar-translation method, and project-based learning. The difference was in the step of the strategy implementation. In addition, the findings showed that the most appropriate method in teaching reading comprehension was grammar-translation method since it helped students comprehend the procedure text. There were several students who still had a hard time following the lessons. Teachers are supposed to make sure that all students have understood the whole text or not and they should observe the students’ situation and needs so that the teaching and learning is contextual.

The development of education is growing, and the technology-infused lesson is a powerful tool to attract pupils' attention, especially in reading. This approach can be seen as an adaptive movement to equip the learning process and the fourth industrial revolution. Nowadays, the demand of the technology-infused lesson is increasing as it is proven to help pupils learn the language better. Hence, this study explores multimedia learning as an approach to teaching reading comprehension. Besides, this study aims to answer two questions, which are the effectiveness of multimedia learning in helping indigenous pupils learn comprehension and which elements of media are effective in enhancing reading comprehension among indigenous pupils in Malaysia. Two instruments used to collect the data from 20 indigenous pupils in one primary school located in Kluang, Malaysia, and an action research design was used to achieve the purpose. The respondents were chosen through the judgment sampling technique. SPSS was used to analyse the data collected from the test, and thematic analysis was employed to analyse the semi-structured interview. The result shows that the implementation of multimedia learning in teaching reading comprehension is useful as the combination of multiple elements of media scaffolded the process of understanding. On the other hand, audio is the least effective in helping pupils comprehend the information.

This study aims to determine the effect of variable vocabulary and reading comprehension skills of argument essay writing. Method used is the method of survey with a sample of students of 40 students were taken by random sampling technique from Tunas High School Jaka Sampurna in Bekasi. Data collection using the validated test instrument. Regression equation Y ̂=1,079+0,385X_1 wich means that if the students vocabulary mastery is ignoed, then the ability to write arguments for 1,079. Every adding one point to the vocabulary it will add the ability to write the argument of 0,385 point. Regression equation Y ̂=1,079+0,355X_2 whic means that if reading comprehension is ignored, then the argument of 1,079 skill writing, meaning the reading comprehension is ignored then the ability to write arguments. For each additional 1,079 points in reading comprehension, reading comprehension will add 0,353 points. It can be concluden that the vocabulary and reading comprehension together affect 23,4% of the writing skills of argumentation percent of the value. (koef determinate R2 = 0,234 with the value of the test F = 5,665.

This study explored lived academic experiences of primary school teachers in teaching reading. It attempted to find out whether primary school English teachers were aware of different thinking and comprehension strategies like cognitive, metacognitive and comprehension strategies: predicting, visualizing, making connections and summarizing. Purposive sampling technique was employed to specify the participants. To collect the required data, focus group discussion and classroom observation were used. Seven experienced primary school English teachers were involved in the study: two of the teachers participated in the classroom observations, whereas the five teachers participated in the Focus Group Discussion. The data collected through FGD were audio-recorded and later transcribed for analysis. The data were analyzed based on grounded theory using open, selective and substantiate coding. The results of the analysis indicated teachers gave little attention to thinking or thought-based teaching of reading comprehension. The teaching focused on textual comprehension instead of research-proved thinking strategies.

Teaching reading in ESP Class is a challenging work not only for the English teacher but also for the students of Islamic Education Program or PAI of University of Muhammadiyah Jember. Teacher should be selective and creative in implementing teaching strategy in order to encourage students to comprehend reading text and communicate their understanding in the target language. The implementation of Read-Examine-Decide-Write (REDW) Strategy was done in ESP class of PAI. Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was found as a good solution to teach them reading comprehension. By grouping the students in pair, they did their learning effectively through the steps of REDW. 75.8% or 22 of 29 students got score ≥ 75. They were active in comprehending the text through steps of REDW. The research result showed that Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was able to improve PAI students’ reading comprehension in the first semester of 2015-2016 Academic Year.Keywords: reading comprehension, read-examine-decide-write strategy

This study is conducted to find out the profile of students’ speed reading skill and the students’ reading comprehension, as well as to prove if there is significant correlation between the students’ skill in reading speed and reading comprehension of students of SMP Islam Sultan Fattah Salatiga in the academic year of 2007/2008. The writer applies random sampling technique to take the sample (40) from the total of population of 81 students. Furthermore, the profile of students’ reading speed skill in the text comprehension is observed through applying reading speed limited by time. From such a test, the writer knows how many words produced by students every minute. The students’ reading comprehension, in addition, can be seen from the result of the answered of questions. The data is analyzed using correlative statistics. From the result, the writer finds that there is no correlation between reading speed and reading comprehension of the students. It is shown from the result r0=0,027 and rt=0,312 in the level of significance 5%. Then, there are many factors that influence reading speed and the comprehension as children weakness of vocabularies and the lack of concentration in reading.

This research aimed to determined; (1) the level of student’ knowledge  on biotechnology subject matter; (2) the level student’ completeness on biotechnology subject matter. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The population of this research were grade  XII student from 5 senior high school in Binjai including SMA Negeri 1, SMA Negeri 2, SMA Negeri 4, SMA Negeri 6, SMA Negeri 7. Samples were chosen by using random sampling technique. Data were collecting using instrument of diagnostic test mastery on matter biotechnology and interview. The data were analyzed using descriptive percentage. Result from this research showed: (1) the average level of student’ knowledge  on biotechnology subject matter was  68,15 (SD±15,24) and categorized as good. (2) the level of student’ completeness on biotechnology subject matter was (36,32%). Based on the result of this research it can concluded the level of knowledge of students is actegorized as good but still important to improve the level of knowledge and attitude learning difficulties for more goodness result.
