This research investigates and analyzes wear properties of 316 stainless steel before and after applying paste boronizing process and to investigate the effect of shot blasting process in enhancing boron dispersion into the steel. In order to enhance the boron dispersion into 316 stainless steel, surface deformation method by shot blasting process was deployed. Boronizing treatment was conducted using paste medium for 8 hours under two different temperatures which were 8500C and 9500C. Wear behaviour was evaluated using pin-on-disc test for abrasion properties. The analysis on microstructure, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and density were also carried out before and after applying boronizing treatment. Boronizing process that had been carried out on 316 stainless steel increases the wear resistance of the steel compared to the unboronized 316 stainless steel. The effect of boronizing treatment together with the shot blasting process give a greater impact in increasing the wear resistance of 316 stainless steel. This is mainly because shot blasted samples initiated surface deformation that helped more boron dispersion due to dislocation of atom on the deformed surface. Increasing the boronizing temperature also increases the wear resistance of 316 stainless steel. In industrial application, the usage of the components that have been fabricated using the improved 316 stainless steel can be maximized because repair and replacement of the components can be reduced as a result of improved wear resistance of the 316 stainless steel.

Boronizing had been extensively used in enhancing the properties of metallic material such as steel by formation of hard casing on the surface of the substrate. This study highlighted the effect of applying surface deformation process which is shot blasting on the dispersion layer of paste boronized 304 stainless steel. Boronizing treatment was conducted using two different temperatures which are 850°C and 950°C for 6 hour holding time. Shot blasting process was conducted onto the surface of the samples before boronizing process in order to allow deeper boron dispersion layer. Microstructure and boron dispersion layer measurement were then accomplished using optical microscope. XRD analysis was performed to validate the existence of Fe2B phases and Rockwell hardness test was also conducted to obtain the hardness values. The results indicated that combinations of high boronizing temperature and shot blasting process facilitate deeper dispersion layer. Deeper dispersion layer are paramount as it will enhanced the hardness and wear properties.

Electro polymerization of N-benzothiazolyl maleamic acid (NBM) was carried out on stainless steel plate electrode in a protic medium of monomer aqueous solution using electrochemical oxidation procedure in electrochemical cell.Spectroscopic characterization techniques were investigated to obtain information about the chemical structure of polymer. The anti-corrosion action of polymer was investigated on stainless steel by electrochemical polarization method. In addition, the effect of adding nanomaterial (TiO2, ZnO (bulk-nano)) to monomer solution on the corrosion behavior of stainless steel was investigated. The results obtained showed that the corrosion rate of S-steel increased with temperature increase from 293K to 323K and the values of inhibition efficiency by coating polymer increase with nanomaterial addition. Apparent energies of activation have been calculated for the corrosion process of S-steel in acidic medium before and after polymeric coating. Furthermore were studied the effect of the preparing polymer on some strain of bacteria.

Ni-Co-W composite coatings modified by different contents of Co-based alloy powder in the Ni-based alloy with 35 wt.% WC (Ni35WC) were deposited on stainless steel by laser cladding. The influence of compositional and microstructural modification on the wear properties has been comparatively investigated by XRD, SEM, and EDS techniques. It was found that the austenite dendrites in the modified coating adding 50 wt.% Co-based alloy were refined and a lot of Cr23C6 or M23(C, B)6 compounds with fine lamellar feature were formed around austenitic grain boundaries or in the intergranular regions. The contribution of element Co to the modification of Ni35WC coating is that it cannot only promote the formation of more hard compounds to refine austenite grains, but also refine the size of precipitates, and change the phase type of eutectic structure as a result of disappeared Cr boride brittle phases. A noticeable improvement in wear resistance is obtained in the Ni35WC coating with 50 wt.% Co-based alloy, which makes the wear rate decreased by about 53 % and 30% by comparison to that of the substrate and the Ni35WC coating, respectively. It is suggested that the improvement is closely related to the composite coating being strengthened owing to the increase of coating hardness, formation of a fine-grained microstructure caused by Co, and fine hard precipitate phases in the eutectic structure.


Stainless steel is used widespread in various industries, but it has poor wear resistance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the wear resistance of enhanced surface of 316L stainless steel by applying the combination of surface treatments that consist of shot blasting followed by paste boronizing. Glass beads with diameter 250 microns and the blasting pressure of 6 bar has been used as the shot material in conducting shot blasting process. Paste boronizing process was conducted at temperature 950°C for 8 hours soaking. Data were collected and analyzed which concentrating on the samples’ microstructure, microhardness and wear evaluation. Shot blasting improves the case depth of boride layers formed after performing paste boronizing by boosting the boron diffusion owing to the grain refinement created by shot blasting. The ultimate combination of shot blasting and paste boronizing parameters enhance the case depth of the smooth and compact boride layers with high boron content. The hardness performance increase 624% compared to untreated 316L stainless steel which also highly improve the wear resistance of the material. In this investigation, these dual processes of surface treatment which are shot blasting and paste boronizing can be applied in fabricating the improved 316L stainless steel for industrial usages.

Cemented carbides are the most common cutting tools for machining various grades of steels. In this study, wear behavior of two different cemented carbide grades with roughly the same fraction of binder phase and carbide phase but different grain size, in turning austenitic stainless steel is investigated. Wear tests were carried out against 316L stainless steel at 180 and 250 m/min cutting speeds.The worn surface of cutting tool is characterized using high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and 3D optical profiler.The wear of cemented carbide in turning stainless steel is controlled by both chemical and mechanical wear. Plastic deformation, grain fracture and chemical wear is observed on flank and rake face of the cutting insert. In the case of fine-grained, the WC grains has higher surface contact with the adhered material which promotes higher chemical reaction and degradation of WC grains, so chemical wear resistance of the composites is larger when WC grains are larger. The hardness of cemented carbide increase linearly by decreasing grain size, therefore mechanical wear resistance of the composites is larger when WC grains are smaller.

NiCrBSi alloy coatings are widely used in wear and corrosion protection at higher temperature. As a primary hard phase forming element, B element can effectively improve the coating hardness. In this study, the low coefficient of friction of BN with three ratios (10%, 20%, and 30%) was added in order to reduce the wear rate and provide additional B element. The NiCrBSi/h-BN composite coatings were successfully prepared on a cast-iron substrate using supersonic air-plasma spray technology. The phase constitution, microstructure characterization, and microhardness of the coatings before and after oxyacetylene flame remelting were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray techniques, respectively. The wear resistance of composite coatings was also tested in this paper. It was found that the microstructure was well refined by remelting treatment and this was beneficial for the adherence between the coating and the substrate, which was nearly 33[Formula: see text]MPa. The wear resistance of the NiCrBSi alloy coating was also improved with the increasing component of h-BN in remelted samples. When the h-BN content reached 30%, the friction coefficient decreased to 0.38 for the remelted coating. The effect of the remelting process on the anti-abrasive property and extension of the material’s wear life was quite important.

Tungsten carbide cobalt coating has been extensively used for cutting and mining tools, aerospace, automotive and other wear resistance applications. These coatings not only have superior mechanical properties like high hardness, toughness and compressive strength but have also excellent controllable tribological properties. In this paper a comparison of wear properties and structural phases has been presented to consider for tribological applications. It is found that nanocrystalline duplex coatings have shown much superior properties as compared to the microcrystalline coatings. Evidence of clusters of WC particles was found in microcrystalline coating as compared to homogeneous dense coating structure observed in the nanocrystalline coating. These results are discussed to assess their suitability for super hard wear resistance applications.

AbstractComponents produced by additive manufacturing (AM) via direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) have typical as-fabricated surface defects. As a result, surface properties of AM products should be modified to increase their strength, anti-wear behaviour, and at the same time to ensure their high corrosion resistance. Surface modification via shot peening is considered suitable for additive manufacturing of medical devices made of 17-4PH stainless steel. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of shot peening pressures (0.3 MPa and 0.6 MPa) and three types of blasting media (CrNi steel shot, nutshell granules and ceramic beads) on the tribological characteristics and corrosion resistance of specimens of DMLS 17-4PH stainless steel. Results demonstrated that shot peening caused steel microstructure refinement and—except for the nutshell shot-peened specimens—induced both martensite (α) formation and retained austenite (γ) reduction. 17-4PH specimens peened with steel and ceramic shots showed the highest increase in surface hardening by approx. ~ 119% (from 247 to 542 HV), which significantly improved their wear resistance. The highest mechanical properties (hardness and wear resistance) and corrosion resistance were obtained for the surfaces modified using the following media: ceramic beads > CrNi steel shot > nutshell granules. Adhesive and fatigue wear were two predominant mechanisms of tribological deterioration. Results demonstrated that the application of shot peening using ceramic beads led to grain size refinement from 22.0 to 14.6 nm and surface roughness reduction, which in turn resulted in higher corrosion resistance of the material. DMLS 17-4PH specimens modified by shot peening using ceramic beads and a pressure of 0.6 MPa exhibited the optimum surface morphology, hardness and microstructure, and thus improved wear and corrosion performance.

A nanocrystalline (NC) layer with the thickness of 30 µm was produced on pure titanium surface by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). Microstructure observation indicated that the grain size increases with depth from the treated surface. The friction coefficient decreases and the wear resistance increases with the SMAT sample as compared to its coarse-grained counterpart. The improvement of the wear properties could be attributed to the higher hardness of SMAT sample.
