Patients with chronic renal failure suffer higher rates of depression because of psychological stress due to physical and social changes. Efforts to reduce depression level are needed. Cognitive therapy and life review therapy are believed to be effective in reducing depression. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of life review therapy alone and in combination with cognitive therapy on depression in patients with chronic renal failure. This study employed a quasi-experiment with a comparison group design. Fifty-six respondents were selected using a consecutive sampling, which thirty-six were assigned in the experiment and comparison group. Depression was measured using Beck Depression Inventory. Dependent and Independent t-test were used for data analyses. The results revealed that the combination of life review and cognitive therapy had a significant effect (p<.05) in reducing depression compared with the life review therapy alone. The average of depression score decreased in the experiment group from 27.04 (4.71) to 22.29 (4.24). But there was no significant change in the average of depression score in the comparison group from 26.54(4.18) to 26.71 (3.70). This therapy can be used as a complementary medicine to treat patients with chronic renal failure, specifically for those with depression, and it serves as a recommendation for nursing intervention in hemodialysis units.

Abstract Life review therapy, used as part of a comprehensive therapy plan for increasing the quality of life of the elderly, helps them to resolve their past conflicts, and accept their present conditions. This study tested the effectiveness of a structured life review therapy protocol on the life satisfaction of institutionalized older adults. A quasi-experimental design was adopted in this study. Fifty older adults aged 65 or above were recruited from nursing homes in southern Taiwan through convenience sampling. The participants in the intervention group carried out life review therapy for eight weeks in addition to their daily activities. The participants in the comparison group maintained their daily activities. Both groups were evaluated using a life-satisfaction scale including two aspects of life worries and situations in weeks 1 and 8. Data were collected at baseline (T1), immediately post-intervention (T2). Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of the intervention on the outcomes. The overall life satisfaction increased significantly over time for the intervention group compared to the comparison group from week 1 to week 8. The life review therapy programs showed promising effects in improving the life satisfaction of older adults living in nursing homes.

Slamet Garut. Kata kunci: Dzikir, gagal ginjal kronis, hemodialisis, kecemasan, relaksasi. The Impact of Dzikir to The Level of Anxiety of Chronic Renal Failure Patient Undergoing Hemodialysis AbstractAnxiety disorder can be adversely impacting to the chronic renal failure (CRF) patients undergoing hemodialysis. Untreated anxiety could affect negatively both physiological and psychological and exacerbate the disorder. Dzikr relaxation is a methode that combines relaxation and repetitious of prayer (dzikr) which focused on relaxation technique and the words contained in the dzikr can be a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety with leading relaxation respons. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of dzikr relaxation intervention to the anxiety level of CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis in dr. Slamet Garut Hospital. Method and Design this research involving 17 participants, taken through purposive sampling, completed dzikr relaxation twice a day for two days period. Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) was used to assess anxiety level both before and after treatment. Current study used One-group pretest-posttest design and T-test was used for the analysis by the time all data have been completely gathered. The result showed there was a significant contrast of anxiety level for all participants before and after dzikr intervention (P<0.005). The average of participant anxiety scores is 18 (mild to moderate anxiety) before treatment whereas found 13 point (mild) in average for anxiety score post treatment. The anxiety scores decreased 3 to 6 points from initial scoring subsequent to participants completed dzikr relaxation. Dzikr relaxation can be considered as one of nursing intervention in mitigating anxiety disorder for CRF patients during hemodialysis treatment in dr. Slamet Garut Hospital.Key words: Anxiety, Chronic Renal Failure, dzikr, hemodialysis, relaxation.

Chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis complain of moderate pain from repeated punctures of the arteriovenous fistula. This study examined the optimal application time of thermotherapy for reducing pain, anxiety, and side effects during arteriovenous fistula puncture. This study was conducted as a single-blinded randomized controlled trial. The participants were arteriovenous fistula puncture patients with chronic renal failure who were divided into two thermotherapy groups and one control group. This study was approved by the institutional review board and registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (KCT0003768). Differences between groups regarding pain, anxiety, and side effects were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, the χ2 test, and the Scheffé test. A significant difference was observed between the 10-min and 20-min thermotherapy groups and the control group in terms of the pain they experienced. Additionally, more side effects were encountered in the 20-min thermotherapy group than in the 10-min group. The 10-min application of thermotherapy for an arteriovenous fistula puncture showed the same pain-reducing effect as the conventional 20-min application. The study confirmed a 10-min application of thermotherapy to be an effective nursing intervention for pain relief without side effects.
