Abstract S-Alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides are sulfur-containing natural products characteristic of the genus Allium. Both the flavor and medicinal properties of Allium plants are attributed to a wide variety of sulfur-containing compounds that are generated from S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides. Previous radiotracer experiments proposed that S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides are biosynthesized from glutathione. The recent identification of γ-glutamyl transpeptidases and a flavin-containing S-oxygenase involved in the biosynthesis of S-allylcysteine sulfoxide (alliin) in garlic (Allium sativum) provided insights into the reaction order of deglutamylation and S-oxygenation together with the localization of the biosynthesis, although the rest of the enzymes in the pathway still await discovery. In intact plants, S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides are stored in the cytosol of storage mesophyll cells. During tissue damage, the vacuolar enzyme alliinase contacts and hydrolyzes S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides to produce the corresponding sulfenic acids, which are further converted into various sulfur-containing bioactive compounds mainly via spontaneous reactions. The formed sulfur-containing compounds exhibit bioactivities related to pathogen defense, the prevention and alleviation of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and neuroprotection. This review summarizes the current understanding of the occurrence, biosynthesis, and alliinase-triggered chemical conversion of S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides in Allium plants as well as the impact of S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides and their derivatives on medicinal, food, and agricultural sciences.

 Medicinal plants are used from a very long interval of time for treatment of several diseases. In this review, we present detailed information about the diversified medicinal properties of three different plants, namely, Prosopis laevigata, Symplocos cochinchinensis, and Nymphaea alba. The different medicinal properties found in these three unexplored plants can have industrial applications in the treatment of peculiar diseases such as heart attacks and hypercholestriamia. The typical medicinal properties found in these plant’s antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial activity, which suggests that all these plants can be used in drug design and modeling at commercial level. The unique properties of P. laevigata include anti-biofilm and anti-corrosion activities. The exclusive properties found in S. cochinchinensis include anti-snake venom activity and anticancer activity. The rare properties of N. alba include uterotonic and anxiolytic activities. Combining all these activities, we compare all the properties in these plants and hence conclude with the future therapeutic applications in drug design of these plants.

Obesity is one of the major problems facing human beings at present. Because of the consumption of refined sugar and foods rich in carbohydrates, as well as adoption of a more sedentary lifestyle (often by necessity as is the case with most office workers), people in all countries are increasingly getting obese, which in turn is leading to other disorders like diabetes and cardiovascular complications. Existing conventional drugs have adverse side-effects, which is the major cause for scientists to look towards the plant kingdom for discovery of newer drugs with less or no side-effects. The Allium genera of plants are widely known for their medicinal properties, in particular Allium cepa (onion) and Allium sativum (garlic), whose beneficial actions include anti-obesity effects. In this mini review, we examine a lesser known plant of the Allium genera, namely Allium fistulosum L. and review its anti-obesity potential. The conclusion of the present study is that the plant contains phytochemicals like ferulic acid and quercetin, which possess anti-obesity mechanisms of action thus rendering the plant to be of potential use against obesity.

SummaryEvidence continues to accumulate that the pleiotropic nature of heparin (beyond its anticoagulant potency) includes anti-inflammatory activities at a number of levels. It is clear that drugs exploiting these anti-inflammatory activities of heparin may offer exciting new therapeutic applications to the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory diseases.

Background: Natural preservatives are compounds produced by natural ingredients that can suppress bacterial growth and development. Natural preservatives are carried out because most of the preservatives circulating are chemicals and unsafe for the body. One of the natural preservatives is by using garlic extract (Allium sativum L).  Objective: This study is aimed to determine the effectiveness of the antibacterial garlic (Allium sativum L) as a natural preservative in fresh African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).  Method: This research used the Pour Plate iroculation method. African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) which is soaked with garlic (Allium sativum L) with a concentration of 7%, 14% and 21% for 30 minutes, then the fish will be kept at room temperature with a storage period of 24 hours and 48 hours and calculated growth in bacterial numbers with the Colony counter.  Result: Based on the research result, it was found that garlic extract (Allium sativum L) can obstruct the effectiveness of antibacterial in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) at a concentration of 14%.

Traditional medicine in Indonesia has been known by the public before formal health services using modern medicine. Indonesia has many type of herbal plants which have medicinal properties including dadap (Erythrina orientalis). This study aims to utilized dadap herbal liniment by modifying heating in Vigin Cocanut Oil. The study conducted in the laboratory of Agricultural Product Processing using a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is the addition of 250 ml (M1), 375 ml (m2), and 400 ml (M3) Virgin Cocanut Oil treatment. The second factor is the heating tim of 5 minutes (L1), 10 minutes (L2), and 15 minutes (L3). Observation variable consisted of yield, Specific gravity, and organoleptic test of aroma and colored. The result showed an average yield of 87.70-91.88%. The highest yield was found in the treatment of adding 400 ml Virgin Cocanut Oil and 15 minutes of heating time. The highest type of weight was found in the treatment of addition of 325 ml Virgin Cocanut Oil and 5 minutes heating time. Based on the organoleptic scent test, the everage penalist gives a like answer. Organoleptic colors of reudeuep herbal products is according to SNI number 06-23-2006.
