The nurse as educator: expertise in training teachersAbstract: The role of the professional nurse in the educational context has experienced moments of great change in education characterized by social and educational changes. This paper explores the concept of unlearning learning through three projects conducted by university colleagues. It questions whether it is necessary to unlearn in order to truly accommodate and synthesise new ideas into a reflective praxis. It suggests that perhaps we do not really unlearn but loosen some of the threads of our knowledge and experience so that they are not bound so steadfastly. The untangling of some of our thoughts does not simply make room for the addition of a new body of knowledge, but assimilates the new knowledge in the light of previous experiences, re-organises connections between previous experiences, brings new insights and alters our understanding, beliefs and behaviour.

Prior research calls for more attention to organizational contexts’ moderating effects on a relationship between diversity in antecedent knowledge and resultant new knowledge generation. The authors examined 11,939 firms granted 103,952 U.S. patents between 1975 and 1999, and found a stronger positive association between the diversity and resultant new knowledge’s degree of usefulness under the context more strongly characterized with extensive search efforts (i.e., U.S. applicants). Under the context more strongly characterized with selective appropriation (i.e., non-U.S. applicants), the study found a weaker inverted U-shape association between the diversity and resultant new knowledge’s variability in usefulness. Author’s findings show that it is important needed to properly control for the effect of such organizational contexts for a more conclusive explanation on the role of antecedent knowledge diversity in new knowledge generation.

The theory and main characteristics of progressivism are studied in the paper. The starting point for research of progressive education is the analysis of its philosophical, psychological and ideological foundations. Numerous aspects of progressivism are discussed in that context: goals of education and learning, role of school, nature of knowledge and the choice of educational contents, viewpoints on instruction and learning, as well as the position of teachers and students in educational process. In this, the intention is not to analyze only the theory of progressivism, but also to point out its practical aspects by describing the work of schools which have largely accepted the progressive ideas from the first half of the twentieth century with the intention of their further development. In that sense, this paper is also an attempt of studying the application of progressive ideas in practice in contemporary education. It is concluded that, notwithstanding the amount of criticism coming from other schools of thought, progressivism in education was and has remained an important reformation movement. Open schools, schools without grades, cooperative learning, multi-generation grouping in classrooms, experiential learning and numerous programs of alternative schools are the examples of infiltration of progressive ideas in contemporary educational practice.

Ireland is currently experiencing burgeoning inward investment and economic growth. The ability to attract inward investment is largely due to a well-educated and trained workforce and a rapidly developing innovation culture in the universities and elsewhere. Accordingly, the role of the university has changed radically in the new innovation age because of the heightened strategic importance of education in a society which is now truly knowledge-driven. The ability to exploit new knowledge is intimately linked to the protection of new ideas. Ireland, like most of Europe, lags behind the USA in the area of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). The authors discuss the importance of redressing this problem as a matter of urgency.

This study focuses on a conceptual representation of the metaphysical and non-classical context of reflection in its subjective dichotomous understanding. The author successively reviews the specifics of reflection, as well as the features of methodology of cognition and self-knowledge in the context of determining the values and priorities of human development and consciousness. The article also includes an overview of the main categories of reflection through a breakdown of theoretical relationships and the most important conceptual discourses. The theoretical significance of the problem of cognition and self-knowledge is determined by the central role of man in society and history. The analysis shows that the methodology of cognition and self-knowledge should be based on the principles of axiological disengagement, a combination of logical and historical aspect, as well as on the coherence of theory and practice.

Knowledge revision is the process of updating incorrect prior knowledge in light of new, correct information. Although theoretical and empirical knowledge has advanced regarding the cognitive processes involved in revision, less is known about the role of emotions, which have shown inconsistent relations with key revision processes. The present study examined the effects of experimentally induced emotions on online and offline knowledge revision of vaccination misconceptions. Before reading refutation and non-refutation texts, 96 individuals received either a positive, negative, or no emotion induction. Findings showed that negative emotions, more than positive emotions, resulted in enhanced knowledge revision as indicated by greater ease of integrating correct information during reading and higher comprehension test scores after reading. Findings are discussed with respect to contemporary frameworks of knowledge revision and emotion in reading comprehension and implications for educational practice.

This study uses the archetype of a ‘trickster’ to reflect back on, and hence problematize, the role of the educator/facilitator identity in leadership learning. This is based on the view that a trickster is a permanent resident in liminal spaces and that these liminal spaces play an important role in leadership learning. Our approach was based on the reading of the trickster literature alongside reflective conversations on our own experiences of facilitation of leadership learning, development and education. We suggest that paying attention to the trickster tale draws attention to the romanticization of leadership development and its facilitation as based on a response to crisis that leads to a further enhancement of the leader as a hero. Hence, it also offers ways to problematize leadership learning by uncovering the shadow side of facilitation and underlying power relations. We therefore contribute by showing how, as facilitators, we can use the trickster archetype to think more critically, reflectively and reflexively about our role and practices as educators, in particular, the ethical and power-related issues. In our conclusions, we make recommendations for research, theory and practice and invite other facilitators to share with us their trickster tales.

Ryan Patrick Hanley makes two original claims about François Fénelon: (1) that he is best regarded as a political philosopher, and (2) that his political philosophy is best understood as “moderate and modern.” In what follows, I raise two concerns about Hanley’s revisionist turn. First, I argue that the role of philosophy in Fénelon’s account is rather as a handmaiden of theology than as an autonomous area of inquiry—with implications for both the theory and practice of politics. Second, I use Fénelon’s writings on the education of women as an illustration of the more radical and reactionary aspects of his thought. Despite these limits, the book makes a compelling case for recovering Fénelon and opens up new conversations about education, religion, political economy, and international relations in early modern political thought.
