Graffiti Content as an Index of Political Interest

Graffiti in 25 male restrooms on a college campus were examined for political references on the eve of the 1972 national elections and at three subsequent time periods. As predicted, the proportion of “political” content in the graffiti was significantly greater on the eve of the election than at any of the other periods.

The foam produced by nymphs of Poophilus costalis on eleven different host plants belonging to eight families on St. Xavier’s College campus in India was studied over five months. The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of these biofoams were investigated. The results revealed that P. costalis preferred Theporsia purpurea and Mimosa pudica for laying their eggs and producing foam, over the other tested plants. P. costalis produce their foam on either nodes or internodes on monocotyledons (30%) (p < 0.05), whereas on dicotyledons, they produce more foam on the stems (63.8%) than on the leaves (6.2%) (p < 0.01). The number of nymphs in each piece of foam from P. costalis varied from 1 to 3 (mean = 1.8 per plant). They produced their foam (5.7 to 45.2 cm) from the ground level on a plant. The length and breadth of a piece of foam ranged from 1.0 to 3.9 cm and 0.6 to 4.7 cm, respectively. The foam tended to be cooler than the environment. Qualitative profiling showed that the foam consists of carbohydrates, including maltose; trypsin; amino acids; protease. The foam was also analyzed using a spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The antimicrobial activity of the biofoam was the greatest against Staphylococcus aureus, the growth of which was reduced by 55.9 ± 3.9%, suggesting that the foam could be used as an antimicrobial product. However, no activities were observed against Fusarium oxysporum and Candida albicans.

Aeromonas proteolytica was grown for various time periods in nutrient broth, tryptic soy broth, a semisynthetic medium, and 1 and 5% peptone under different conditions involving temperature and in continuous shake and stationary flasks. The cell-free culture filtrates were tested for hemolytic, endopeptidase, and dermonecrotic activity and optimal growth conditions for their production were determined. The dermonecrotic activity and endopeptidase activity was found to be parallel in all tests, while hemolysin was independent of the other two. Studies on the thermal stability of the culture filtrate revealed that hemolysin and dermonecrotic and endopeptidase activity were destroyed at 70 °C for 30 min. Fractionation of the filtrate by Sephadex G-200 resolved three peaks at 280 nm. Peak I was inactive; peak II contained endopeptidase and dermonecrotic and hemolytic activity; peak III contained pigment and hemolysin. Evidence is presented that the endopeptidase and dermonecrotic substance found in the cell-free filtrates of A. proteolytica grown medium appear at the same time and thus may be the same entity.

A simple method has been established for the evaluation of the service performance of ships. Input data are easily collected daily on board and transformed to a well-defined condition that makes possible the comparison between ships, for instance, sister ships, and between different time periods of voyages for the same ship. The procedure has been applied to two ships that are identical, with the only exception that one has a conventional propeller, whereas the other one is fitted with a high-efficiency propeller of the KAPPEL type. The results are obtained from a period of 2 years steaming for both vessels. They clearly confirm the increase of propulsive efficiency obtained with the KAPPEL propeller in the order of magnitude of 4%.

Divided partisan control of the American national government is not a new phenomenon. Of the 41 presidents from Washington to Bush, 20 saw the House of Representatives under the control of the opposing party. While divided control of government is nothing new, however, its recent causes are. Before 1955, divided control was due to election reversals in the off year – easily interpretable in terms of negative retrospective judgements or switched policy choices on the part of the electorate. After 1955, on the other hand, four of the seven presidents were elected with a House of Representatives controlled by the opposing party. By analysing data collected during the 1988 national elections, we distinguish between congressional and presidential ticket-splitting and find their causes to be complex. It is caused, in part, by congressional incumbency and ballot formats, but wider social forces are also responsible for ticket-splitting.

Abstract Background One of the most important factors that affects breastfeeding self-efficacy and exclusivity is breastfeeding support provided by the family. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of breastfeeding education sessions for primiparous women, with and without the attendance of maternal grandmothers, on breastfeeding self-efficacy and infant feeding patterns. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 64 primiparous women who referred to the Antenatal Clinic of Amiralmomenin Hospital, Tehran, Iran from June to December, 2018. Eligible pregnant women were allocated into two groups; either with and without grandmothers in attendance. Group assignments were determined according to the week the women had prenatal care at the hospital. All eligible women seen in the clinic during 1 week were assigned to one group and women who presented in the alternating week were assigned to the other group. In the education group with grandmothers in attendance, each woman participated in two prenatal education programs with her mother and one postpartum program approximately 3 h before discharge. In the other group, participating mothers attended breastfeeding education sessions without the grandmother’s attendance. The participating mothers answered questions from the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF) at the time of the hospital discharge, and 4 and 8 weeks after delivery. Questions about the infants’ feeding patterns were asked by telephone contact with the participating mothers from both groups at the same time periods. Results The mean BFSE scores were signficantly different between the groups with grandmothers and without grandmothers at the time of the hospital discharge (60.15 ± 4.47 vs. 56.84 ± 6.22, independent t-test; p = 0.017), and at 4 weeks (61.71 ± 2.66 vs. 56.62 ± 9.12, p = 0.004) and 8 weeks after delivery (63.68 ± 2.14 vs. 60.03 ± 6.32, p = 0.003). No significant difference existed in infant feeding patterns between the groups at the same time periods. Conclusions This study suggests that breastfeeding education with grandmothers’ attendance is effective in improving the mothers’ breastfeeding self-efficacy. A family-centered program should be considered in beastfeeding education for increasing of exclusive breastfeeding.

The Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems journal pays tribute to V. A. Rokhlin, one of the founders of ergodic theory, a world-renowned topologist and geometer, and a man of tragic fate and exceptional courage. Rokhlin's mathematical heritage splits rather sharply into the ergodic theory – measure theory and topology – geometry parts. This fact has to do with a natural evolution of his interests but also with the keen sense of style in mathematics that Rokhlin possessed to an unusual degree. Naturally, we will concentrate on Rokhlin's contributions to ergodic theory and measure theory, his influence on other mathematicians working in those fields, and the development of some of his ideas. Fortunately, the topology part of Rokhlin's heritage has been superbly presented in Part I of the book ‘A la recherche de la topologie perdue’ published by Birkhaüser in Progress in Mathematics series (v. 62, 1986). The same cannot be said about the work on real algebraic geometry, Rokhlin's last big achievement. The impact of that work, carried out by his students, however, is very much felt now, and is very unlikely to be forgotten or neglected. On the other hand, his work in ergodic theory and measure theory, was restricted primarily to two relatively short time periods, 1947–1950 and 1959–1964, and for the most part was not followed by Rokhlin's immediate students. Hence, it runs a certain risk of being underestimated. We hope that the articles by A. Vershik; S. Yuzvinsky and B: Weiss, published in this issue, will put Rokhlin's work and his influence in ergodic theory into the right perspective.

In 1931 I described two newly-discovered stone age industries of post-glacial age situated in north-east Ireland which had been made by myself and worked in conjunction with my friend C. Blake Whelan: the one from the Lower Estuarine Clay on Islandmagee, and the other from what is probably a fluviatile gravel intercalated between the Upper and Lower Estuarine Clays in the raised-beach formation at Cushendun.The former of these cultures has its counterpart in the blade industry beneath alluvium in the Orwell Estuary at Ipswich, Suffolk; whilst the latter finds its parallel in the raised-beach at Campbeltown in Argyllshire, Scotland. Adopting the familiar culture-sequence of Central Europe I had previously designated these two groups as phases of the Magdalenian period, but, in order to avoid confusion between the time-periods and the nomenclature of continental cultures, I have decided to base my chronology of the north Irish industries upon the natural changes of climate revealed by a study of the deposits in which they were found. The industries to be described below were contemporary with the Mesolithic Forest Cultures distinguished by Childe and Clark over the plain of northern Europe.

This paper questions the cycling nature of the unification and diversity of pottery forms through a case study of ceramics of the Western Tripolye culture in the Southern Bug and Dnieper interfluve in modern Ukraine. We identified the cultural cycle representing the transition from more unified ceramic assemblages to more diverse ones, and then back to more unified assemblages. This cultural cycle is disturbed by the increase in the diversity of pottery sets at three of ten subsequent time periods we have analysed. The obtained results are discussed in frames of deterministic explanations and the dynamic behaviour of complex systems.

This study was conducted to explore the effect of adding aqueous extract of Melissa officinalis leaves (AEMOL), some antioxidants to Tris extender on sperm’s plasma membrane and acrosome integrity for Holstein bulls following different preservation periods. The study was executed at the Department of Artificial Insemination, Abu-Ghraib belong to the Directorate of Animal Resource, Ministry of Agriculture, during the period from October 2015 to February 2016 using ten Holstein bulls of 2.5-3 years old. Semen was collected via artificial vagina in one ejaculate per bull per week for the 7-week experimental period. Pooled semen was equally divided into ten groups using Tris extender. In this experiment, AEMOL (0.062mg/100 ml; A2), WEMOL (0.062mg/100 ml) + 5 mM of vitamin C (A3), AEMOL (0.062mg/100 ml + 0.08 mM of Trolox (A4), AEMOL (0.062mg/100 ml + 100 IU of catalase (A5),100 IU of catalase (A6), 5 mM of vitamin C (A7), 0.08 mM of Trolox (A8), 0.2 mM of vitamin E (A9) and AEMOL (0.062mg/100 ml +0.2 mM of vitamin E (A10) and comparisons in response were made with the control group (Tris extender, A1). The effect of these additives on semen characteristics of Holstein bulls for different preservation periods (cooling at 5◦C, 48 h, 1, 2 and 3 months post cryopreservation, PC) were studied. The A2 group exhibited greater (P≤0.01) plasma membrane and acrosome integrity percentage as compared with A1 group at all preservation time periods. Greater (P≤ 0.01) plasma membrane and acrosome integrity percentage were noticed in comparison with the A1 group at all preservation time periods. On the other hand, A5 group exhibited greater (P≤ 0.01) plasma membrane and acrosome integrity percentage, as well as, Adding of vitamin E alone (A9) or combined with AEMOL (A10) to Tris extender had positive (P≤ 0.01) effect in improving all the semen characteristics at all preservation time periods. In conclusion, adding of AEMOL as alone or combined with the other synthetic antioxidants to Tris extenders had a crucial role in improving PC sperm's plasma membrane and acrosome integrity percentage of Holstein bulls. This was reflected positively in increasing pregnancy rates of the inseminated cows and owner's income consequently.
