Yield and quality of maize from spent engine oil contaminated soils amended with compost under screenhouse conditions

Abstract The study investigated the effects of poultry manure compost (PMC) on the growth performance and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) when cultivated on spent engine oil (SEO) contaminated soil with a view to assessing its nutritional composition. The experiment consisted of three SEO treatments (0%, 1% and 2% w/w) with six levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 t ha-1) of PMC applications. Each treatment was replicated thrice and arranged in a 3 × 6 × 3 factorial completely randomized design to give a total of 54 pots. At full physiological maturity, maize grains were harvested and threshed manually for analysis. As the bioavailability of metals increased with increasing PMC, their uptake by maize plants was enhanced. The soil amended with 10 t ha-1 and contaminated with 1% SEO recorded the highest uptake rates of 1.761 × 10-2, 2.345 × 10-2 and 4.285 × 10-2 day-1 for Fe, Cu and Pb respectively. Also, the significantly (P<0.05) highest yield of maize (5.8 t ha-1) and the highest nutritional values of crude protein (11.27 g 100 g-1) and crude fibre (2.71 g 100 g-1) were obtained with zero SEO soil contamination at 10 t ha-1 PMC applications. There was evidence of yield and nutritional quality reduction of maize when cultivated on SEO contaminated soils with or without poultry compost fertilization

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, to study the yield and quality of aromatic fine rice as affected by variety and nutrient management during the period from June to December 2013. The experiment comprised three aromatic fine rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38, and eight nutrient managements viz. control (no manures and fertilizers), recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers, cowdung at 10 t ha-1, poultry manure at 5 t ha-1, 50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% cowdung, 50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% poultry manure, 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% cowdung and 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% poultry manure. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The tallest plant (142.7 cm), the highest number of effective tillers hill(10.02), number of grains panicle (152.3), panicle length (-1 -122.71cm), 1000-grain weight (15.55g) and grain yield (3.71 t ha-1) were recorded in BRRI dhan34. The highest grain protein content (8.17%) was found in BRRI dhan34 whereas the highest aroma was found in BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38. The highest number of effective tillers hill(11.59), number of grains panicle (157.6), panicle length (24.31 cm-1-1) and grain yield (3.97 t ha-1) were recorded in the nutrient management of 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% cowdung (5 t ha-1). The treatment control (no manures and fertilizers) gave the lowest values for these parameters. The highest grain yield (4.18 t ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan34 combined with 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% cowdung, which was statistically identical to BRRI dhan34 combined with 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% poultry manure and the lowest grain yield (2.7 t ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan37 in control (no manures and fertilizers). The highest grain protein content (10.9 %) was obtained in the interaction of BRRI dhan34 with recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers which was as good as that of BRRI dhan38 and 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + 50% poultry manure. <p>Untuk mendapatkan cara pengolahan minyak kelapa yang lebih eisien dalam menghasilkan rendemen dan mutu yang tinggi dan tahan simpan serta aman dikonsumsi telah dilakukan penelitian pengaruh konsentrasi starter Saccharomyces cerevisiae dan lama fermentasi terhadap rendemen mutu minyak kelapa. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Balai Penelitian Tanaman Kelapa dan Palma Lain Manado dan Kebun Percobaan Mapanget sejak bulan Maret sampai Desember 2001. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap disusun secara faktorial, yaitu faktor A adalah konsentrasi starter Saccharomyces cerevisiae, terdiri dari 0%, 0.25%, 0.35%, 0.45% dan faktor B adalah lama fermentasi krim. terdiri dari 0 jam, 12 jam, dan 24 jam. Ulangan dilakukan sebanyak 2 kali. Hasil penelitian diperoleh rendemen minyak tertinggi 23.83% pada fermentasi krim selama 24 jam. Mutu minyak kelapa yang dihasilkan sebagai berikut kadar air 0.03 - 0.18%, asam lemak bebas 0.15 - 0.29%, warna bening dan bau harum/ normal, bilangan peroksida berkisar 0.20 - 0.40 meq/kg, mutu minyak kelapa tersebut memenuhi Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) 01-2902-1992.</p><p>Kata kunci: Minyak kelapa, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, konsentrasi, fermentasi. rendemen, mutu</p><p> </p><p><strong>ABCTRACT </strong></p><p><strong>Effect of concentration of stater Saccharomyces cerevisiae and duration of fermentation on the content and quality of coconut oil</strong></p><p>Research on the effect of concentration of starter Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the content and quality of coconut oil was conducted at the Laboratory of Indonesian Coconut and Palmae Research Institute (ICOPRI) and Mapanget Research Instalation from March to December 2001. The objective of the research was to find out the effective technique and processing of coconut oil. The research used a completely randomized design with 2 factors and 2 replications. Factor A was the concentration of starter Saccharomyces cerevisiae of 0%, 0.25%, 0.35%, 0.45% and factor B was duration of fermentation consist of 0 hour, 12 hours, and 24 hours. The results showed that the highest yield of coconut oil is 23.83% was obtained by fermented coconut cream for 24 hours. The coconut oil had good quality with moisture content about 0.03 to 0.18%, free fatty acid content about 0.15 to 0.29%, colorless, good smell and peroxide value about 0.20 - 0.40 mcq/kg, the quality of coconut oil fulfilled the requirements of Indonesian National Standard (Standar Nasional Indonesia/SNI 01-2902-1992).</p><p>Key words: Coconut oil, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. concentration, fermentation, yield and quality</p>

Weeds interfere negatively on development, yield and quality of soybeans (Glycine max). Inadequate weed control by herbicide use can select for resistant or tolerant biotypes, leading to a shift in the weed flora. An example is the increase of incidence of morning glory (Ipomoea spp.) in soybeans growing areas in South Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the competitiveness of soybeans intercropped with I. triloba, I. indivisa and I. purpurea through a replacement experiments series. Greenhouse experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications. The first experiment was carried out aiming to get the plant population while total plant dry mass remained constant. Other experiments were done under replacement series experiments with soybeans and morning glory ratios of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 100:0 using the 250 plant m-2 defined by the preliminary experiment. Leaf area, root and shoots dry mass were assessed. Diagrams along with index interpretation were used to performed a competitiveness analysis. Soybeans showed greater competitiveness as I. triloba, I. purpurea and I. indivisa species for the leaf area, root and shoots dry mass variables. Intraspecific competition prevails between soybean plants whilst interspecific competition prevails for morning glory.

This study investigated the impacts of spent engine oil on the physicochemical properties of soil, soil's microbial population and growth of Capsicum annuum. It covered assessment of different levels of contamination (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80%) in soil; which represents the degree of oil spillage concentration on the growth performance of C. annuum investigated. Percentage germination, seedling height, number of leaves and number of branches decreased as the concentrations of the spent engine oil in soil samples increased and affected soil physicochemical properties. The screening experiment conducted showed that poultry manure improved the physicochemical properties of sandy loam soils contaminated engine oil. The effects of poultry manure as an organic amendment was assessed using pepper (C. annuum) as test crop. All amendment made significant increase in soil organic carbon and calcium content over the polluted soils. Soil acidity increased, soil exchangeable ions decreased. N, P and K were altered in the polluted soils as compared to the controls. There were increased bacterial counts (2.21 – 2.85) and a decrease in fungi population (0.48 - 0.59) in the spent engine oil-contaminated soils compared with the control. The oil reduced germination percentage, depressed growth, reduction in leaf number and plant height of the C. annuum. Therefore the spent engine oil clearly had detrimental effects on soil's physicochemical and biological properties. The oil contributed largely to the extreme acidic nature of the polluted soils. However, maximum increase in plant height, germination percentage, number of leaves and branches were recorded with amendment of the polluted soils with poultry manure. Results show the considerable potential of remediation protocols with poultry manure as a remediating agent for oil spill remediation in the soil samples.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of compost manure and organic soap on hydrocarbon degradation in petroleum products contaminated soil. 10 kg of top soil collected at a depth of 0-20 cm, air dried and sieved, were poured into plastic containers. The soil samples were was pounded with 1 L of spent engine oil, 1 L of kerosene, 1 L of petrol and 1 L of diesel daily for five days. The containers were placed under natural environmental conditions for three weeks to enable full acclimatization of the petroleum products with the soil. A completely randomized design comprising T1 (Polluted soil without treatment ‘control’); T2 (10 kg contaminated soil + 500 g organic soap); T3 (10 kg contaminated soil + 500 g compost manure); and T4 (10 kg contaminated soil + 500 g compost manure + 500 g organic soap) was used for this study. Some physical characteristics (soil porosity and specific gravity) and Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) of the soil samples were tested for, after the full acclimatization of the soil samples, and at the end of the 10 week experimental period, in accordance with standard methods. Results of the study showed that addition of the compost manure and organic soap the contaminated soil samples significantly (p ≤0.05) degraded the THC, and improved the soil physical characteristics. The result showed that the combination of compost manure and organic soap gave the best remediation result (from 957.21 mg/kg to 154.36 mg/kg), followed by organic soap (from 957.21mg/kg to 203.61 mg/kg), and then compost manure (from 957.21 mg/kg to 262.03 mg/kg). At the end of the experimental period, vegetative growth was observed in the treated soil samples; whereas,  in the control soil samples vegetative growth was absent. Results obtained from this study have shown that amending petroleum products contaminated soils with compost manure and organic soap will enhance remediation of petroleum products contaminated sites.

ABSTRACT For the Caatinga passion fruit (Passiflora cincinnata Mast.), there are no indications of varieties specific for the Brazilian Savanna conditions, as well as conduction techniques that make it possible to express a greater yield potential. This study aimed to evaluate the yield and quality of CPEF2220 and CBAF2334 populations in espalier and trellis conduction systems. A completely randomized design was used, in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, with three replications of four plants per plot. The fruit yield and physical characteristics were evaluated throughout the production cycle. The average yield was 8.0 kg plant-1 (3.5-14.9 kg plant-1) and the average number of fruits per plant was 139.1 (55.8-283.5), with average pulp yield of 29 %. There was a tendency to increase the number and yield of fruits for the CPEF2220 population conducted in the espalier system. The plant survival rate was 41 % (CPEF2220) and 87.5 % (CBAF2334), with a higher adaptation to the Brazilian Savanna conditions, while the CPEF2220 population presented a higher yield potential. Reductions in mass, longitudinal and equatorial diameter and fruit shape were observed throughout the harvest, with some exceptions for the espalier system, which showed more elongated fruits. The trellis system showed a greater yield potential for the parent populations of the passion fruit BRS Sertão Forte, for the study conditions.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of combined application of urea and poultry manure(viz., 100% N-urea, 75% N-urea + 25% N-PM, 50% N-urea + 50% N-PM, 25% N-urea + 75% N-PM and 100% N-PM) on yield and quality of two varieties of lettuce viz., Green Span and NAI RE KUI DA F1at the Horticulture Farm of Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal from October 30, 2015 to January 30, 2016. Results revealed that the integration of 50% or more N-PM had significantly higher values in growth, yield and quality parameters while the use of 100% N-urea had the lowest one. Similarly, the two varieties significantly differed in all characters and the variety Green Span performed better at all levels of integration of N-urea with N-poultry manure than NAI RE KUI DA F1. Based on interaction effect, Green Span performed better with 100% N-poultry manure while NAI RE KUI DA F1 did better with the combination of 50% N-urea and 50% N-PM. SAARC J.
