Abstract The decline in youth population and the upsurge in ageing farmer population have resulted in low agricultural output and per capital productivity in rural Nigeria, which is a threat to the national food security. High school students’ perception of agriculture and factors influencing their willingness to study agriculture in tertiary institutions were therefore investigated in this study. Information from 285 science students in high schools was analysed using descriptive statistics, Likert scale and logistic regression. Age of the students was 15.30 ± 1.17 years with almost equal distribution of both sexes. About half (50.5 %) of them wanted to study medicine where as only 4.6 % of the respondents were willing to study agriculture in the university. A higher percentage of female students (57.6 %) were willing to study agriculture in tertiary institution than their male counterparts (42.4 %). A higher percentage of students from public schools (51.4 %) were willing to study agriculture whereas 48.6 % of those from private schools were willing to do so. The students were undecided about the contribution of agriculture to national development but strongly disagreed that agriculture gives less income than other professions. Major motivating factors that can stimulate the respondents’ willingness to study agriculture were career awareness program in agriculture, practical knowledge of agriculture and agricultural excursion. The likelihood of a high school student’s willingness to study agriculture increased significantly with having a father who primarily practised agriculture and supports agricultural education, attending a school where crude implements are not used, visit to a mechanized farm and the youth’s willingness to own a farm in the future irrespective of the course of study, while attending a private school will decrease it. In conclusion, high school students had average perception of agriculture and were not willing to study agriculture in tertiary institutions. Suggestions are presented on how to change this negative attitude towards this vital branch of science.

This study examined the prevalence of attendance in Physical Education (PE) classes and associated factors among high school students. A cross-sectional study performed with 2,874 public and private high school students (57.9% girls, mean age of 16.45 years; SD = 1.22) from João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Attendance in PE classes was measured by the question: ‘How many PE classes do you attend during a normal week? The factors measured were: attitude, self-efficacy, risks and benefits related to physical activity (PA), perceived health, PA level, sedentary behavior and nutritional status. Binary logistic regression was used. It was observed that 41.9% attended two or more PE classes per week, with higher prevalence rates in public school students than private school counterparts (56.6% vs. 6.6%; p < 0.001). Higher attendance in PE classes was observed in male and younger students from both school systems. It was also observed in students who did not work, were members of the highest economic class and whose parents had higher schooling levels in public schools, and from 1st and 2nd grades of high school education in private institutions. Attending two or more PE classes per week is positively associated with a more favorable attitude to engaging in PA as well as its level, in both school systems, and with positive health perception among public students. In conclusion, attendance in PE classes was low, particularly in private schools. Attending two or more PE classes per week was associated with positive aspects of PA and health in the students under study.

The study aimed to identify the level of social support (support by friends, support from the family, support by the teacher), and to analyze the relationship between social support and achievement among students of High school students in government schools. The study followed descriptive analytical approach based on a questionnaire applied to 137 students of Karak government schools. The study found that the students get moderate level of social support; the study showed that the level of friends support came first, followed by teacher support, followed by family support, and found a relationship between social support and achievement in Students of Karak government schools. In light of the results, the study recommended several recommendations, the most important of which is to sensitize parents and faculty members about the importance of social support.

English conversation is an important lesson for Senior High School students in order to face the globalization effects. Many students considered English conversation as a controversial lesson through their positive and negative attitudes toward it. This study aimed to investigate the types of attitudes of the Senior High School students in learning English conversation, to describe the realization of the attitudes of Senior High School students in learning English conversations, and to explain the reason of the attitude which Senior High School students realized in the ways they are. The subjects of this study were 20 students consisting 12 females and 8 males at the age of 16-18 years old. The data were collected by observations and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that positive and negative attitude in learning English conversations, five types of realizations, and the reasons of the students realized their attitudes i.e. the language loyalty, language pride,  and awareness of language norms. It was concluded that the students’ attitude varied as to positive and negative ones and realized in numerous manners affected by several factors. Keywords: Discourse Markers, Students Interactions, Nonformal Education, Conversation

The purpose of this study was to find out a comprehensive model of achievement motivation appropriate for Indonesian students. Specifically, this study examined the contribution of task-value, self-efficacy and goal orientation in influencing students’ achievement motivation. The subjects of this research were 393 high school students, 219 of them are female and 174 are male. 46% of them were senior high school and 54% junior, high school students. 45% were from public schools and 55% from religion-based private schools. The task-value, self-efficacy, goal orientation and achievement motivation as scaling instruments used in this study were developed from Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire Manual. The instruments had been tested and proved valid and reliable. Analysis of model testing data was done using technique of confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the trisula model of achievement motivation was reliable. The task-value, self-efficacy and goal orientation are significant loading factors for achievement motivation. The self-efficacy also is a significant loading factor for the task-value and goal orientation. Keywords: achievement motivation, goal orientation, self-efficacy, task-value

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of occupational injuries and identify their risk factors among students in two municipalities. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in public schools of the municipalities of Santo Antonio do Pinhal and Monteiro Lobato, Brazil. A stratified probabilistic sample was drawn from public middle and high schools of the study municipalities. A total of 781 students aged 11 to 19 years participated in the study. Students attending middle and high school answered a comprehensive questionnaire on living and working conditions, as well as aspects of work injuries, and health conditions. Multiple logistic regression models were fitted to estimate risk factors of previous and present occupational injuries. RESULTS: Of 781 students, 604 previously had or currently have jobs and 47% reported previous injuries. Among current workers (n=555), 38% reported injuries on their current job. Risk factors for work injuries with statistically significant odds ratio >2.0 included attending evening school, working as a housekeeper, waiter or brickmaker, and with potentially dangerous machines. CONCLUSIONS: The study results reinforce the need of restricting adolescent work and support communities to implement social promotion programs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the influence and the role of parents in caring and educating children through parenting models that cause juvenile delinquency, as well as the effortsthe parents' role in the juvenile delinquency reduction. Object of this study includes elementary school students and junior high school students as well as High School of state or private school at four Regency or City in West Sumatra. The Results of research shows that the influence of parents' parenting models to juvenile delinquency is very influential. The role of parents is very necessary in the prevention of juvenile delinquency by changing the model of parenting applied.

Background: This study was designed to measure the prevalence of chronic gingivitis among 16- year-old public high school students in Khartoum State.Methods: A total of 385 high school students of 16 years of age, from public schools in different geographical locations representing different socioeconomic classes in Khartoum were randomly selected and examined. The variables of the present study had been collected by one examiner using a direct interview questionnaire and all the present teeth were examined at four sites (Mesiobuccal, distobuccal, mesiolingual, distolingual) for the presence of plaque, using the Plaque Index (Loe and Sillness) and Gingival Index (Sillness and Loe).Results: Prevalence of gingivitis was 96.9%, of which 68.6% were of mild form (majority), 27.5% of moderate condition and only 0.8% was of severe grade. The most common form of gingivitis was the generalized form that accounted for 94.5%. The relationship between oral hygiene and degree of gingivitis was assessed after collecting data on study area, gender, socio-economic status, tooth brushing tool used, frequency of brushing per day, direction of tooth-brushing and regularity of dental visits. The adjusted relationship was still significant at the 99% confidence level (p-value 0.000), with a correlation coefficient of 0.704.Conclusions: The study showed significantly higher prevalence of chronic gingivitis among 16-year-old public high school students in Khartoum State. The degree of gingivitis showed statistical significance when correlated with oral hygiene status, socioeconomic status, frequency and horizontal direction of tooth brushing, while it showed insignificance when correlated with gender. Med Phoenix. Abstract Background In Croatia, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine became available through a publicly funded national programme during the 2015/2016 school year among boys and girls in the first year high school. Improved parental awareness of HPV and vaccination could help increase the uptake of the vaccination. The primary aim of this study is to establish the importance of educating parents for a greater response to the voluntary vaccination. Methods Parents of students in the first year of high school evaluated the educational lessons in the spring of 2016 in 11 counties coordinated by the Croatian Institute of Public Health: total of 36 doctors from 11 counties. Statistical significance was tested using chi-squared test. Results In total, 3350 evaluations were submitted (82.7%). Parents with a positive attitude towards vaccination following the education more often stated the lesson contributed to this attitude than parents with a negative attitude (P &lt; 0.001). Results show that counties with highest attendance had highest rates of vaccination (Sisačko-moslovačka 1.74 highest and Dubrovačko-Neretvanska 0.03 lowest). Conclusion Our study shows that parents have the impression an educational lesson can contribute to the development of their positive attitude towards vaccination. Further research should be aimed at disparities and how to target these with appropriate interventions.
