Abstract In this article, I analyse the soundtrack of the green band trailer for Sinister (Scott Derrickson, 2012), combining quantitative methods to analyse the soundtrack with formal analysis. I show that, even though Sinister is a narrative about a demon who lives in images, the horror in the soundtrack of this trailer is articulated through the sound design. I describe the structure of the soundtrack and analyse the distribution and organisation of dialogue, the use of different types of sound effects to create a connection between the viewer and the characters onscreen, as well as the use of specific localised sound events to organise attention and to frighten the viewer. I identify two features not previously discussed in relation to quantitative analysis of film soundtracks: an affective event based on reactions to a stimulus and the presence of nonlinear features in the sound envelopes of localised affective events. The sound design of this trailer is consistent with the principles of contemporary sound design in horror cinema, but also demonstrates some variation in its use of sound as a paratext to its parent film.

In this paper I analyse the soundtracks of fifty horror film trailers, combining formal analysis of the soundtracks with quantitative methods to describe and analyse how sound creates a dominant emotional tone for audiences through the use of different types of sounds (dialogue, music, and sound effects) and the different sound envelopes of affective events. The results show that horror trailers have a three-part structure that involves establishing the narrative, emotionally engaging the audience, and communicating marketing information. The soundtrack is organised in such a way that different functions are handled by different components in different segments of the soundtrack: dialogue bears responsibility for what we know and the sound for what we feel. Music is employed in a limited number of ways that are ironic, clichéd, and rarely contribute to the dominant emotional tone. Different types of sonic affective events fulfil different roles within horror trailers in relation to narrative, emotion, and marketing. I identify two features not previously discussed in relation to quantitative analysis of film soundtracks: an affective event based on the reactions of characters in horror trailers and the presence of nonlinear features in the sound design of affective events.

Orthographic and orthoepic diversity of Serbo‑Slovak interlingual approximatesThe paper is a presentation of the results of a qualitative formal analysis of different types of Serbo-Slovak interlingual approximates (false friends, interlingual homonyms). In his earlier research on Serbo-Slovak approximation, the author of this paper defined the appropriate terminology and the meaning of the notions similar and identical in terms of quantitative analysis. The results of the study are based on lexical material containing 266 pairs of Serbo-Slovak approximates. They have been classified into four groups – interlingual homonyms, homophones, homographs and paronyms. We found that the differences between approximates are similar in their nature within the groups they were classified into. The existence of these types of differences is possible due to the presence of numerous spelling principles in the Slovak orthography – which features a combination of the phonetic, morphological, grammatical and etymological principles. In the Serbian language, the phonetic principle is the only one consistently present, and the morphological principle can be seen only in a few exceptions. Orthoepic differences are closely related to the orthographic ones. In addition, we can distinguish other kinds of differences which result from a different etymological development or are accidental. Comparing and understanding differences gives a comprehensive and clear view of the formal differentiation of Serbo-Slovak interlingual approximation. Ortograficzne i ortoepiczne zróżnicowanie słowacko‑serbskich aproksymatów międzyjęzykowychW niniejszym artykule zaprezentowane zostały wyniki analizy jakościowej pojedynczych rodzajów serbsko-słowackich aproksymatów międzyjęzykowych (wyrazów zdradliwych, homonimów międzyjęzykowych) pod względem ich formy. Autor w swoich wcześniejszych badaniach nad aproksymacją serbsko-słowacką zajął się zdefiniowaniem odpowiedniej terminologii i ustaleniem znaczenia pojęć podobny i identyczny za pomocą analizy ilościowej. Wyniki badań opierają się na materiale leksykalnym liczącym 266 par serbsko-słowackich aproksymatów. Zaklasyfikowano je do czterech grup – homonimy, homofony, homografy oraz paronimy międzyjęzykowe. Okazało się, że różnice między aproksymatami mają podobny charakter w zależności od tego, do której z grup aproksymaty zostały zaklasyfikowane. Pojawienie się tych różnic wynika z istnienia kilku zasad ortograficznych w pisowni języka słowackiego – połączenie zasady fonetycznej, morfologicznej, gramatycznej oraz etymologicznej, podczas gdy w języku serbskim obecna jest tylko zasada fonetyczna, morfologiczną można zauważyć w kilku wyjątkach. Różnice ortoepiczne są ściśle powiązane z ortograficznymi. Oprócz tego wskazać można takie różnice, które wynikają z odmiennego rozwoju etymologicznego lub są przypadkowe. Porównanie i poznanie różnic daje możliwość pełniejszego spojrzenia na formalne zróżnicowanie serbsko-słowackich aproksymatów międzyjęzykowych.

Morphological diversity is often studied qualitatively. However, to truly understand the evolution of exceptional diversity, it is important to take a quantitative approach instead of relying on subjective, qualitative assessments. Here, we present a quantitative analysis of morphological diversity in a Family of small mammals, the tenrecs (Afrosoricida, Tenrecidae). Tenrecs are often cited as an example of an exceptionally morphologically diverse group. However, this assumption has not been tested quantitatively. We use geometric morphometric analyses of skull shape to test whether tenrecs are more morphologically diverse than their closest relatives, the golden moles (Afrosoricida, Chrysochloridae). Tenrecs occupy a wider range of ecological niches than golden moles so we predict that they will be more morphologically diverse. Contrary to our expectations, We find that tenrec skulls are only more morphologically diverse than golden moles when measured in lateral view. Furthermore, similarities among the species-rich Microgale tenrec Genus appear to mask higher morphological diversity in the rest of the Family. These results reveal new insights into the morphological diversity of tenrecs and highlight the importance of using quantitative methods to test qualitative assumptions about patterns of morphological diversity.

<p>The study draws on findings from a survey of adults in non-formal continuing education under the professional training for employment framework in Spain. Quantitative analysis was carried out to a sample of 425 respondents from three different educational providers. Firstly, a factor analysis was conducted to fourteen motives for participation items. A two-dimension model of motivation to participate was identified: one dimension oriented towards job-improvement and the other dimension oriented towards learning. Secondly, a variance analysis was conducted according to demographics variables. Results showed significant statistical differences in the first dimension according to demographic variables. This might indicates an instrumental motivation in participation in work-related training among different groups who try to cope with different types of drawbacks.</p>

<em>This study aims to determine the description and influence of human capital, creativity and organizational performance at Krisnadwipayana University.  The research method used in this study using quantitative methods can be interpreted as a research method based on the philosophy of positivism. Researchers who use a quantitative approach will test a theory by detailing specific hypotheses, then collect data to support or refute these hypotheses. The approach to be used in this research is a quantitative analysis approach based on statistical information. This study shows that the effect of human capital on creativity has a significant effect, the effect of human capital based on the test results has a significant effect on organizational performance, the effect of creativity based on the test results has a significant effect on organizational performance, and the effect of human capital through creativity does not affect organizational performance. because the existence of creativity as a mediating variable does not make the role of human capital increase in organizational performance.</em>

BH field is one of the Globigerina limestone gas reservoir that exhibits strong seismic direct hydrocarbon indicator (DHI). This field is a 4-way dip faulted closure with Globigerina limestone as the main reservoir objective. The field was discovered back in 2011 by BH-1 exploration well and successfully penetrated about 350ft gross gas pay. BH-1 well was plugged and abandoned as Pliocene Globigerina limestone Mundu-Selorejo sequence gas discoveries. The laboratory analysis of sampled gas consists of 97.8% of CH4 and indicating a biogenic type of gas. This is the only exploration well drilled in this field and located on the crest of the structure. Seismic analysis both qualitative and quantitative, are common tools in delineating and characterizing reservoir. These methods usually make use of seismic data and well log collaboratively in the quest to reveal reservoir features internally. The lack of appraisal well in the area of study made the reservoir characterization process must be carried out thoroughly, incorporating several seismic datasets, both PSTM and PSDM, seismic gathers and stacks. Bounded by appraisal well limitation, this research looks into Gassmann's fluid substitution modeling, seismic forward modeling to confirm the DHI flat spot presence in the seismic, as well as seismic AVO analysis. Meanwhile, for quantitative analysis, model-based seismic post-stack inversion and simultaneous seismic pre-stack inversion were conducted in order to delineate the distribution of Globigerina limestone gas reservoir in BH Field. Through comprehensive analyses of qualitative and quantitative methods, this research may answer the challenge on how to intensively utilize seismic data to compensate the lack of appraisal well data in order to keep delivering a proper subsurface reservoir delineation.

Each video game has its own unique, visual aesthetic, and it’s up to the composer to complement this visual world by creating a sonic atmosphere. Many of the greatest games have incorporated musical elements into their sound effects and ambiences. As the field of game music continues to grow, so does the importance of sound design as part of the composer’s skill set. This chapter explores how music and sound effects have interacted throughout the history of game music, defining these relationships for the reader in understandable terms with clear distinctions and accessible examples. This chapter explores FEZ (2012) as an example, along with a variety of other examples in which the music and sound effects were conceived with different levels of interconnectivity.

This chapter argues that the vocal performance of Lara Croft’s character in Tomb Raider 2013 manifests a particular type of media femininity requiring her fear and fragility and contrasts with similar games featuring male leads. Extending the discussion of the male gaze to sound brings new insight to the relationships between a character’s look, her movements and mechanics, and her vocalizations, to embody the character’s gender or act as gendered corporeality. The chapter argues that by virtue of being sound “effects,” women’s voices and feminized sounds in games draw on and solidify some of the most deeply entrenched gendered norms of sound design and voice-over work. Lara Croft’s excessive breathiness, as well as the overuse of environmental reverberation, codes her gendered sonic position as “feminized.” Players experience Lara Croft’s vocalizations as coded with abundant emotionality and fragility—sounds of strain, inner monologue, gasps, reactions, and battle cries—especially when compared with a similar narrative and game character, Nathan Drake, from the Uncharted series. By comparing the gendered sonic positioning of Lara and Nathan, the chapter shows her embodied vocal fragility by linking these characteristics to a transmedia historiography of feminized vocal typologies.

Abstract The human alkaline phosphatases constitute a system of multiple molecular forms of enzymes in which heterogeneity is partly due to genetic factors and partly to posttranslational modifications. Recognition of the nature and occurrence of these multiple forms has made a significant contribution both to the understanding of changes in alkaline phosphatase values for serum in disease and to the use of alkaline phosphatase measurements in diagnosis. Many of the diagnostic advantages of alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme analysis can be obtained with the aid of qualitative methods such as zone electrophoresis. However, quantitative methods are needed to take full advantage of the potential benefits of isoenzyme analysis. Selective inactivation methods can be applied successfully to the quantitative analysis of bone and liver alkaline phosphatases in serum. However, the aim of future research should be to remove the limitations at present imposed on quantitative analysis by the close similarities of bone and liver alkaline phosphatases.

Abstract In this paper, we present a new semi-automatic methodology for construction of event-based ontology from the library catalogue of the largest collection in the world of metadata records of historical Hebrew manuscripts. Based on the constructed ontology, we developed and implemented a new framework for catalogue data enrichment, correction, and its systematic quantitative analysis. Finally, we demonstrate the results of the proposed large-scale analysis of three most prominent event types in the corpus, as well as a few cross-event relations and trends.
