Corrosion and wear resistance study of Ni-P and Ni-P-PTFE nanocomposite coatings

AbstractThis article reports on the corrosion and wear resistance of Ni-P and Ni-P-PTFE nanocomposite coatings deposited on mild steel substrates using the electroless plating technique. The coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-Ray (EDAX), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The coatings were smooth and had thicknesses between 7 and 23 µm. They contained Ni, P, and additionally, F, in the case of the Ni-P-PTFE films. A broadening of the Ni peak in XRD was attributed to the amorphous nature and/or fine grain size of the films. Corrosion resistance was measured using immersion and electrochemical polarization tests in 3.5% NaCl solution whereas wear resistance was determined by the pin-on-disc method. Both Ni-P and Ni-P-PTFE coatings exhibited significant improvement in corrosion (in salty media) and wear behavior. Furthermore, the addition of PTFE in the coatings showed improvement in their corrosion resistance as well as a reduction in friction coefficient. Our testing revealed that the coatings’ wore out following the “adhesive type” mechanism.

The effect of added graphene concentration on the microstructure, phase composition, corrosion- and wear- resistance of plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) coatings formed on D16T aluminum alloy in silicate electrolyte with different concentrations of graphene were investigated. The results show that the morphologies of the coatings with graphene were obviously different ascribed to the mode of graphene incorporated into the coating. The coatings consisted of mainly α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3, and Al, which were divided into an outer porous layer and a dense inner layer. The thickness of the coatings increased non-linearly with graphene concentration. The corrosion resistance of the coatings with graphene was significantly improved. The wear resistance of the coatings was also greatly improved apart from the coating with 3 g/L graphene. The coating produced in the electrolyte with 2 g/L graphene exhibited the optimal comprehensive properties because graphene successfully incorporated into the coating via the pores and spread on the surface of the coating.

Ni–SiC nanocomposite coatings with reinforcing SiC nano-particulates were prepared by electrodeposition on MB8 wrought magnesium alloys. The microstructure, chemical compositions, hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of resulting composites were investigated respectively. This article details the state of the art in coating technologies, applied to magnesium based substrates for improved corrosion and wear resistance.The experimental results show that, uniform and compact coatings with good corrosion resistance can be obtained on MB8 wrought magnesium alloys. The wear resistance of the coatings were observed to be superior to hard chromium coatings.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the corrosion and wear protection of a steel substrate by epoxy vinyl ester nanocomposite coatings with Zn and TiO2 nanoparticle fillers. Steel substrates were coated with epoxy vinyl ester nanocomposites, varying Zn and TiO2 nanofiller concentrations and combinations of both nanoparticles. Corrosion resistance was evaluated by salt spray fog test during 480h, according to ASTM B-117. The degree of damage was obtained quantitatively by measuring the enhancement in corroded area compared to the scribe mark. Tribological evaluation was performed with a ball-on-disk tribotester, according to ASTM G-99. Results showed that the combination of Zn and TiO2 nanofillers in an epoxy vinyl ester coating provide a synergistic effect, enhancing corrosion protection due to their combined corrosion and tribological reducing mechanisms.

This paper describes an investigation of nano-Al2O3 powders reinforced ceramic coatings, which has included NiCrAl and Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 coats pre-produced by atmosphere plasma spraying, implemented by laser sintering. Commercial NiCrAl powders were plasma sprayed onto 45 Steel substrates to give a bond coat with thickness of ∼100μm. The 600μm thick Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 based coating was also plasma sprayed on top of the NiCrAl bond coat. With 2.5kw continuous wave CO2 laser, nano-Al2O3 ceramic powders were laser sintered on the based Coatings. The micro structure and chemical composition of the modified Al2O3+13%wt.TiO2 coatings were analyzed by such detection devices as scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the modified coatings were also tested and compared with that of the unmodified. The results show that the crystal grain size of Al2O3 had no obvious growth. In addition, due to the nanostructured Al2O3 ceramic phases, the coatings exhibited higher microhardness, better wear resistance and corrosion resistance than those unmodified counterparts. The complex process of plasma spraying with laser sintering as a potential effective way of the application of ceramic nano materials was also simply discussed and summarized in the end.

Surface modification of 40Cr steel by high current pulsed electron beam has been investigated . The pulsed times of HCPEB was changed from 1 to 25 to prepare different specimens. Surface microstructures and section microstructures after HCPEB irradiation were detected by using metallurgical microscope, SEM and X-ray diffractometer. It is shown that crater defects were found on the surface after the irradiation of HCPEB and the density of craters will decrease with increasing pulses times. When treated by 27Kev accelerating voltage, with increasing pulse times, the particles located in surface layer were obviously refined .The surface roughness, hardness, wear properties and corrosion resistance were analyzed after irradiation of HCPEB. The wear resistance and corrosion resistance were obviously enhanced after 10 pulses treatment.

The 31CrMoV9 steels were plasma nitrided under different gas mixture ratios to investigate an influence of nitrogen amount on wear behavior. The structure, mechanical and tribological behavior of untreated and nitrided 31CrMoV9 steels were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness device, 3D profilometer and pin-on-disk wear tester. The analysis outcomes displayed that the compound layer consists of nitride phases (Fe2N, Fe3N, Fe4N and CrN). Additionally, the thickness of the compound layers, surface hardness and roughness increased with increasing nitrogen amount in the gas mixture. The highest friction coefficient value was obtained at nitrogen amount of 50%, but the lowest value was seen at nitrogen amount of 6%. It was observed that wear resistance of 31CrMoV9 steel improved after plasma nitriding, and the best wear resistance was also obtained from plasma nitrided sample at the gas mixture of 94% H[Formula: see text]% N2.
