Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of corn DDGS as a feed ingredient on egg quality and performance of laying hens. The experiment was conducted in three feeding groups of 100 hens each (10 replicates of 10 layers). ISA Brown laying hens were administered a feed mixture containing 15% (E1) or 20% (E2) corn DDGS for 18 weeks. The hens from the control group (C) received a standard diet based on soybean meal as the main protein source only. Laying performance, average egg weight, average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were recorded over the study period. Egg quality traits (egg weight, thick albumen quality, yolk colour, yolk content, shell content and shell thickness) were evaluated twice: at the start and at the end of the experiment. On both dates, all daily laid eggs from each group were analysed, i.e. 90, 93 and 92 eggs from groups C, E1 and E2, respectively at 31 weeks, and 92, 94 and 81 eggs, respectively at 48 weeks of age. Compared to the other groups, the hens from group E2 (20% DDGS) were characterized by a slight - though statistically significant (P≤0.01) - decrease in laying performance and by a higher FCR value. The content of DDGS in the feed mixture had no significant effect on mean egg weight nor on daily feed intake. At the end of the experiment, the eggs laid by the hens from group E2 were characterized by significantly poorer (P≤0.01) albumen and shell quality. Yolk colour in both experimental groups was significantly darker (P≤0.01) than in the C group. The 15% addition of corn distillers dried grains with solubles to feed mixtures for commercial flocks of laying hens is advisable. At corn DDGS addition exceeding 15%, a slight decrease in production results and deterioration in selected parameters of egg quality shall be expected.

Laying performance (laying %), average egg weight (g), average daily feed intake (g/hen), and feed conversion ratio (kg/kg eggs) were recorded over the study period. Egg quality traits (egg weight, thick albumen quality, yolk colour, yolk percentage, shell percentage and shell thickness) were evaluated twice: before the start and at the end of the experiment. There was no effect of dietary DDGS on laying performance or on feed intake. The average egg weight was significantly lower in both experimental groups and the feed conversion ratio was lower compared to the control group. Dietary wheat DDGS did not affect the main egg quality parameters except for thick albumen quality. Eggs from hens fed the diet with DDGS had higher values of Haugh unit than those from the control hens. These results suggest that wheat DDGS can be used in amounts of up to 20% as a component of feed mixtures for flocks of laying hens.

Twenty groups of 36 laying hens in individual cages were fed on one of 5 diets in which the energy:protein ratio was constant. Diets 1 to 5 had crude protein 12.0, 12.9, 14.0, 15.0 and 16.0% and metabolizable energy 8.71, 9.57, 10.27, 11.10 and 11.70 MJ/kg. From 24 to 64 weeks old, egg production of hens given diets 1 to 5 was 71.46, 71.31, 72.51, 71.13 and 69.99%, respectively. Corresponding values of mean egg weight, weekly feed intake and efficiency of feed conversion were 60.51, 60.47, 61.11, 61.02, 61.07 g; 157.16, 147.56, 142.03, 130.37, 126.72 g; 3.674, 3.460, 3.262, 3.031, 3.014 kg feed/kg egg, respectively. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ginger extract (GE) as a dietary supplement for laying hens. A total of 40-week-old 288 Hyline Brown laying hens were randomly divided into two groups with six replicates, and fed a basal diet with or without 100 g/t GE for eight weeks. Dietary GE supplementation increased egg weight, albumin height, and Haugh unit of eggs, and decreased yolk cholesterol content and activities of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase in serum at eight weeks. Moreover, GE resulted in higher total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content in yolk at four and eight weeks and in serum. It was concluded that GE was effective in increasing egg weight and improving the egg quality and antioxidant status of laying hens.

Sustainable solutions for intensive poultry production can help farmers, rural communities, consumers, and regulatory agencies. This study assessed supplementation of laying hens diet with beechwood biochar (BC, 1~2%) and BC–aluminosilicates–glycerin mixture (BCM, 1.5~3%) to lower the environmental impact while maintaining egg quality. The effect on feed intake, laying performance, egg quality, the sensory quality of hardboiled eggs, ammonia (NH3) and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from excreta, and the excreta composition, were evaluated. A total of 90 hens were distributed into 30 cages and divided into five groups (n=6 replications). BC addition increased daily feed intake, while 1.5% BCM addition reduced it. The influence on egg parameters was positive, with a 6% increase in laying performance, up to 10% and 6% increase in shell resistance to crushing and shell thickness, respectively. The sensory analysis demonstrated no significant differences between all treatments. Excreta total N content was numerically lower due to the treatments (by 4~20%); its pH increased (not significantly), while no effect on ammoniacal N and dry matter content was observed. Most of the investigated treatments had a numerically positive (not statistically significant) effect on NH3 reduction. The reduction of VOC emissions was ambiguous and not statistically significant.

Although selenium was considered an essential trace element in the early 1970s, it is now widely used as a biological effect, and research projects are also actively underway. In the production process of selenium-enriched eggs that can meet people's demand for selenium, this article specifically analyzed the effects of different levels of selenium-enriched bean sprouts powder on the laying performance and egg quality of laying hens. First of all, adding selenium-enriched bean sprouts powder(a kind of organic selenium) to the basal diet fed for a long time(20weeks) will affect the egg laying rate and feed intake, egg weight, egg shape index, and eggshell strength, thickness of eggshell. Next, we analyzed the accumulation of selenium in eggs, breast muscles, liver, skin and kidneys after feeding organic selenium. Results when 15~22.5g/kg selenium-enriched bean sprouts powder(selenium content 40mg/kg) was added to the basal diet fed, the egg laying rate, feed intake, egg weight, eggshell strength and eggshell thickness respectively increased by 100.6~102.9%, 101.3~102.3%, 117.1~117.6% and 105.6~108.3%, and the selenium content in eggs increased by 197.7~206.9%. Selenium is obviously deposited on the eggs, breast muscles and skin of laying hens. Therefore, in the production process of selenium-enriched eggs, adding selenium-enriched bean sprouts powder not only increased the production efficiency of eggs, but also increased double the selenium content in eggs. From the 15th day of the laying test, selenium-enriched eggs can be obtained.

The study was conducted to determine the effect of organic acids supplementation on body weight changes, feed intake, feed efficiency, egg production, egg weight and egg quality in laying hens at age between 67 and 74 weeks. A total of 48 Shaver 579 laying hens of 67 weeks age were allotted into 4 groups, each containing 12 hens. The hens were fed basal diet (17% CP and 2800 kcal ME/kg diet) supplemented with 0 (T1), 260 (T2), 520 (T3) and 780 ppm (T4) of organic acid mixture (fumaric acid and salt of butyric, propionic and lactic acids). The results revealed no effect of organic acids supplementation on body weight change and feed intake but improvement of egg production and feed conversion were observed. Organic acids supplementation significantly increased egg production by about 2.26, 8.0 and 9.84% on 260, 520 and 780 ppm respectively when compared with the untreated group (P<0.05). Feed conversion showed a significant (P<0.05) improvement in laying hen groups which fed on the basal diet supplemented with organic acids at 260, 520 and 780 ppm by about 1.85, 8.48 and 7.74% respectively when compared with the control. On the other hand, dietary organic acid had no effect on the average egg weight, while showed a lower percentage of large (P<0.05) and extra large egg (P<0.01) size compared with control group. Body composition parameters were not affected (P>0.05) by dietary treatments. Inclusion of organic acids improved egg shell thickness (P<0.05) while significantly reduced albumen index (P<0.05). Incorporation of organic acids attributed to significant increase per cent albumen (P<0.01) and significant decrease in yolk per cent (P<0.05). It can be concluded that organic acid supplementation of laying hens diet may improve persistency of lay and feed conversion. From economical point of view, it is concluded that organic acid addition (520 ppm) may result an economic benefit of layer production at older age. Two experiments using 551 and 537 LSK-61 WL laying hens in the tests were conducted to evaluate hen performance and egg quality when graded levels of barley or wheat distillers feeds (BDDGS, WDDGS) from conventional process and barley protein and fibre (BP, BF) from integrated starch-ethanol production were incorporated into the diets. In the first exp. hens were fed diets containing 200 g/kg diet of WDDGS or 100 or 200 g BDDGS either with or without cellulase addition, respectively. In the second trial hens were fed diets with 50 or 100g BP as protein supplement or 100 or 200g/kg diet BF with or without multienzyme (Avizyme) addition. Each diet with similar contents of ME, CP, lysine and S-amino acids was fed to hens from 34 to 58 wk of age following 4-wk pretreatment and 2-wk transition periods. There were only small dietary effects and no significant differences in performance due to treatment in either trial. The production level was rather high; on average the laying rate was 82.3 and 84.5 %, feed intake 119 g and 118 g/d and FCR 2.42 and 2.37 kg feed/kg eggs in exp. 1 and 2, respectively, indicating no adverse effects of the supplements used. This study was conducted to examine the quality of eggs and the performance of laying hens fed different levels of calcium. The study was carried out at the Poultry Unit of University of Port Harcourt Teaching and Research Farm, Choba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. One hundred and twenty black Harco birds were used for the study using the completely randomized design. The laying birds were fed with diets consisting of different level of calcium (Ca), which comprised mainly of limestone and bone meal such that treatment 1 (T1) had 2.5 % Ca, T2 ? 3.5%, T3 ? 4.5% and T4 ? 5.5% Ca, respectively. All the birds were raised within four treatment groups which had three replicates of 10 birds each. At the termination of the study, the eggs and the feed records were used to compute the hen-day production (HDP), feed intake, number of eggs laid per hen, dozens of eggs laid per hen, feed consumed per dozen egg, cost of feed per dozen egg produced and mortality. Six eggs were collected from each replicate to study the eggs external quality (egg weight and width, the weight of the shell, the egg shape index, egg length, shell index and thickness) and internal quality (albumen weight, yolk diameter, yolk height and index, yolk pH and pH of the albumen, albumen height, yolk weight, yolk ratio and yolk albumen ratio). The study revealed that significant (P<0.05) differences existed in the performance parameters such as the hen-day production (HDP), feed intake, number of eggs laid per hen, dozens of eggs produced per hen, feed consumed per dozen egg produced and the cost of feed per dozen egg produced. The hens fed the T2 and T3had the highest HDP, those fed the T3andT4 had better feed conversion while the feed cost for T3 feed was the best (the least). Significant differences were also observed in some of the external and internal parameters of the eggs, including, the egg weight, yolk weight, yolk height, yolk index and Haugh unit (HU) while others were not affected. Although the egg from T4 had the highest HU, eggs from all the treatment were within the 'AA' group (HU of more than 72) termed high quality egg. The study showed that farmers can use Ca levels of 3.5 and 4.5% in the diet of the layers and obtain better HDP. However, the diet which had the 4.5% Ca inclusion, gave the best feed conversion and the least cost of the diet per dozen egg produced and was recommended for layers in the humid tropical zone.
