The idea of expressing an opinion on the difficult issue of relating to the anthropological basis of human dignity, arose in response to writings coming from two ideologically very different philosophical positions. The first of these is to be found in the author's academic neighborhood, namely school of Christian personalist philosophy associated with the Catholic University of Lublin. The second, on the other hand, originates from the sphere of libertarian humanist philosophy and expresses itself in a secular concept of human moral autonomy. Ideas coming from these two diametrically opposed standpoints provoke critical reflection; the latter will form the basis on which an alternative concept of human dignity will be outlined. With this aim in mind, analysis of this subject will consist of two parts: the first will take the form of a commentary-style critique, while the second will consist of proposals and clarifications.

Against the backdrop of a critical reflection on the psychiatric concepts of organicism and predisposition to mental illness, the research investigates the relationship between psychiatry and the Great War from a perspective that considers the complexity of the orientations assumed by both the Italian alienists on war pathologies and the health practices implemented towards soldiers. The study highlights the comparison/clash between two totally different approaches forced to coexist during the conflict: on one side, the one from military psychiatry, and on the other the distinctive one from civil asylums. The two perspectives were not always clearly separated, but it is possible to detect a constant tension between the duties towards the war effort and the professional ethics dictated by the neuropsychiatric discipline.

The National Education World is currently trying to improve the ability of its students to think critically and creatively. One of these efforts has been pursued through evaluations that also lead to critical reflection. This research is a descriptive analysis of the final semester evaluation questions that are examined from the point of view of high-level thinking [HOTS]. The reference to the HOTS criteria is that the researcher refers to the opinions of King and his friends. From the manuscript data, the issues examined are samples from the Bandung area. The results of the analysis show that 10 out of 15 HOTS ranges proposed by King are already included in the scripts made by the teachers. On the one hand, it shows the teacher's creativity in compiling questions. On the other hand, all these questions do not refer to the HOTS criteria as planned. Therefore, there is a need to increase teachers' skills in compiling scripts as HOTS. This chapter explores the theological–epistemological dynamics of liberation theology. It considers why liberation theology has tended not to express itself within the language of Anglo-American analytic philosophy that characterizes many epistemological discussions. It then provides a description of liberation theology’s own presentation of its epistemological claims, with a special focus on the notion of ‘critical reflection on praxis’. Attention is given to the ways liberation theology insists on the socially located and historically oriented nature of knowledge formation. Finally, the chapter attempts a dialogue between liberation theology and analytically driven categories of epistemology in the interests of mutual clarification and enrichment, and claims that a fruitful conversation can emerge between these disciplines. Each side also presents challenges that the other might consider for its own refinement and development.

IntroductionSeveral reviews have reported the incidence of schizophrenia in patients with eating disorders (ED) to be between 3–10% and the incidence of transient psychotic episodes to be 10–15%. On the other hand, anorexia nervosa appears to affect 1 to 4% of schizophrenia patients. Reports of psychosis and ED occurring in the same patient have led to various views as to the nature of the relationship between the two.ObjectiveAnalysis of the literature illustrated by different clinical cases in which appears to be a relationship between ED and psychosis.AimsCritical reflection about the hypothesis that could underlie the comorbidity of psychotic illness and ED.MethodsNon-systematic review of a literature search using the keywords: eating disorders; psychosis; comorbidity.ResultsThere is no consistent sequence in the co-occurrence of the two conditions – ED sometimes precede and sometimes follows the onset of psychosis. ED patients can develop psychotic symptoms, most frequently transient in the course of the disorder, while others are subsequently diagnosed with a chronic psychotic disorder. On the other hand, patients with a primary psychotic illness can develop an eating disorder. The connection between the two, however, remains speculative, considering the hypothesis that ED and psychosis can be entirely separate disorders that can, by chance, occur in the same person.ConclusionsThe area of comorbidity and overlapping symptoms in psychiatry requires more deep research. Despite evidence from case series, the comorbidity between ED and psychosis is poorly understood, and firm conclusions cannot be drawn from this analysis.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

"Post-digital, once understood as a critical reflection of “digital” aesthetic immaterialism, now describes the messy and paradoxical condition of art and media after digital technology revolutions. “Post-digital” neither recognizes the distinction between “old” and “new” media, nor ideological affirmation of the one or the other. It merges “old” and “new”, often applying network cultural experimentation to analog technologies which it re-investigates and re-uses. It tends to focus on the experiential rather than the conceptual. It looks for DIY agency outside totalitarian innovation ideology, and for networking off big data capitalism. At the same time, it already has become commercialized."

In this paper, I respond to calls for more critical reflection on the power dynamics of caring leadership. I consider how a combination of care and impotence might unfold as Nietzsche’s ‘slave morality’, crystallised in the phenomenon of ressentiment. At the heart of slave morality is an inversion of values in which everything represented by the Other is denigrated so that the slave can find meaning and solace in his own place in the world. The Nietzschean inversion transforms impotence, inferiority and submission into virtue, identity and accomplishment. In contrast to recent elaborations of ressentiment in followers, I argue that slave morality is something to which leaders, especially caring leaders, are also vulnerable. When caring leadership awakens or exposes the slave-within, we are unable to take charge of – or responsibility for – ourselves, because we have ceded control of the self to forces beyond the self. This is the risk of ‘care ethics’ as a systemic inversion of values which constructs an ideology out of letting others define who and what we are. It creates a breeding ground for ressentiment, feeding off unspoken and unspeakable grievances about the injustices of one’s lot, especially those involving a clash between the rhetoric of empowerment and the experience of impotence. The Nietzschean warning is: Be wary of leadership models which might look and even feel nice, but which turn self-sacrifice into virtue and silence into necessity.

Background. The significance of mutual-help in communities for disaster management is a fundamental important concept. However, the current societal state does not reflect this lesson. S&G (Simulation and Gaming) has the potential to overcome the challenges faced in promoting community-based disaster management. No scientific research is currently present that reviews their achievements in Japan. Aim. This paper analyzes the current achievements of S&G in enhancing community resilience against large-scale earthquakes in Japan. Method. The paper clarifies the theoretical advantages of S&G in enhancing community resilience in coping and adaptive capacity plus proposes a conceptual contribution framework of S&G in improving community resilience. Based on this framework, the paper analyzes some major games that tackle community resilience against earthquakes in Japan. Results. The paper demonstrates the achievements through the S&G spectrum that stresses the disastrous experience with specific resilience views on one side, while decision making for critical reflection from other players with more comprehensive resilience views on the other side. Conclusion. The paper showcases the current S&G achievements in enhancing community resilience against large-scale earthquakes in Japan using the proposed framework, which can be utilized by other disaster-prone countries to develop and evaluate applications of S&G for increasing community resilience against earthquakes.

The struggle between two souls in the work of Walter Schubart.This essay explores the relevance of the work of Walter Schubart (1897-±1941), a virtually unknown cultural philosopher from Lithuania, for today. The writer focuses on the importance of Schubart’s programme of spiritual rebirth and on his intriguing vision for the people of Europe today. To counterbalance the metaphysical egotism of Europe, Schubart finds in Russia, and in Dostoyevsky in particular, a living consciousness of a relation to the whole that could heal Europe. The twentieth century is for Schubart a battlefield between, on the one hand, the promethean period of deserting God focusing on the earth, and on the other hand, the johannean period of the Messianic era that acts out of a desire for charity and healing. Despite criticism of Schubart’s somewhat simplistic views of cultural history, the author emphasises the surprising topical manner in which Schubart’s cultural critique confronts modern Western culture with a critical reflection of itself.

It situates the background and the experiences that frame the overarching message of the book: our relationships with others are what matter most. At the heart of the socially just encounter is the ability to listen and respond to the other. Thus, outlined here is the concept of genuine dialogue (Martin Buber) accompanied by examples of what dialogue is not and what it can be. This introduction argues not only that elementary students are capable of critical reflection and dialogue but that they are desirous of these encounters.
