Abstract.ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR DIFFERENT HOMEWORK INVOLVEMENT PROFILES DEPENDING ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTThe present study aims to find out whether there are differences in homework involvement (in terms of amount of homework completed, time spent on doing homework and homework time management) among students with various levels of achievement. Gender and school level have been controlled as they may impact on the relation intended to be studied and this way they have been included in the covariate performed in the design. The sample consisted of 535 students from the three last years of Elementary School. Findings suggest that the more students achieve higher the more they improve their level of involvement relating to the amount of homework completed and the quality of homework time management. On the other hand, although no statistic significant differences have been found concerning the relation between achievement and time spent on homework, students who achieve lower tend to spend more time completing homework compared to those achieving higher who prove to spend less time completing the assignments. Furthermore, as students go from fourth to sixth forms their time spent on homework increases however, the quality of their homework time management deteriorates. Keywords: amount of homework completed, time spent on homework, homework time management, academic achievement, Elementary School.

Shisha smoking is also known as hookah, water pipe, goza, and nargile. Shisha use among the young is increasing globally. Shisha smoke results in a high concentration of carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, and heavy metals which can be toxic to humans, especially with chronic exposure. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors of shisha smoking among in-school adolescents in Ethiopia. Four regional states in Ethiopia (Oromia, Amhara, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, Tigray) and the capital city (Addis Ababa) were the study areas. A two-stage cluster sampling approach was employed to produce a representative sample. From the sampling frames in the study areas, 36 high schools were selected randomly. A multi-level logistic regression analysis was used to account for cluster-specific random effects, the effect of individuals’, and school-level variables for ever-use of shisha. A total of 3355 secondary school grade 9 and 10 students aged between 13 and 22 years took part in this study. A total of 86 (2.6%) and 20 (0.6%) of the study participants, reported that they had ever smoked or were current smokers of shisha, respectively. Of all study participants, 38.6% perceived shisha as less harmful than cigarettes and 48.5% reported that they do not know which was more harmful to health. Students were more likely to ever use shisha if they had friend/s who smoke shisha (AOR = 16.8, 95% CI: 6.4–44.3), ever smoked cigarettes (AOR = 8.2, 95% CI: 3.4–19.8), ever used khat (AOR = 4.2, 95% CI: 1.9–10.4), ever used marijuana (AOR = 3.9, 95% CI: 1.4–11.1), ever used smokeless tobacco (AOR = 3.1 95% CI: 1.1–8.4), and students had received income from their parents (AOR = 3.1 CI: 1.1–8.8). Prevalence of ever and current use of shisha among high school students is low in Ethiopia compared to many countries in Africa. The majority of adolescents perceived shisha as less harmful to health than cigarette smoking. Health education about the harmful effects of shisha should be delivered to adolescents, along with information on other substances like khat, cigarettes, marijuana, and smokeless tobacco to prevent initiation of substance use.

This article examines the relationship between parental networks and parental school involvement during the elementary school years. Using a large, nationally representative data set of elementary school students—the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study–Kindergarten Cohort—and contextual data from the 2000 U.S. Census, our multilevel analysis shows that higher levels of parental networks in first grade are associated with higher levels of parental school involvement in third grade after controlling for individual- and school-level characteristics. Parental networks are positively related to school involvement activities in formal organizations that consist of parents, teachers, and school staff, including participating in parent–teacher organizations and volunteering at school. Furthermore, the positive effects of parental networks on parental school involvement is stronger for families whose children attend schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods. This suggests that well-connected parental networks can serve as a buffer against school neighborhood disadvantages in encouraging parents to be actively involved in schools.

The method used is a qualitative research method with descriptive analysis techniques with library research by examining the implementation of integrated thematic-based English learning for elementary school students. Data collection is done by reducing documents in the form of reports, news and research articles both nationally and internationally related to the topic of this research article. The results showed that the integration between student experience and previous knowledge possessed by children with English learning presented in a theme, will help children to gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes holistically. The theme developed is of course taking into account the children's knowledge, interests, and environment. Each skill in English is also not taught separately but is learned in an integrated manner with other skills. Therefore, the concept of learning English as a foreign language in accordance with the concept of an integrated thematic approach will be able to provide the value of knowledge, skills, and attitudes as a whole whose process is in line with the characteristics of children at the elementary school level.
