Background: The chemotherapeutic use of cisplatin (CP) is restricted because of its hepatotoxicity induced by oxidative stress. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a secondary product of lipid peroxidation as a biomarker of oxidative stress. Individual administration of black seed oil (BSO) or honey (H) demonstrated hepatoprotective effect in rats. Interaction of both substances when administrated as combination can be evaluated using combination index (CI) to quantitatively depict synergism (CI<1), additive (CI=1) and antagonism effect (CI>1). Objective: to know the combination effect of BSO and honey on rat liver tissue given CP exposure. Methods: This study used 30 rats were divided into 10 groups. Normal group (N); Negative control group (NC); P1-P4 groups were administerated BSO (1 and 2 mL/kg) and honey (3.7 and 7.4 mL/kg); P5-P8 groups were combination of BSO and H. P1-P8 groups were given BSO and honey orally for 21 days. On the 18th day, NC and P1-P8 groups were given CP 8 mg/kg intraperitoneally, while the N group was given NaCl 0.9% 1 mL/kg intraperitoneally. Result: Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were found to be lower in P1-P8 groups compared to negative control group and P6 and P7 groups have levels equivalent to MDA levels of normal control group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Combination of BSO and honey provides a protective effect on cisplatin-induced rat liver tissue damage indicated by reduced MDA levels, but all combination group showed antagonism effect.

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the protective effect of black seed oil against testicular tissue damage in diabetic rats. A total of 18 male rats were divided into 3 groups, including 6 rats in each group.Groups; control (n=6), diabetes (n=6), diabetes + black seed oil (n=6). A single dose of 45 mg / kg streptozocine (STZ) was injected intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. Diabetes + Black seed oil group: For 56 days, 2.5 ml / kg of black seed oil was administered orally to rats. The rats were sacriced at the end of 56 days. Testicular tissues were taken for routine parafn tissue processing for histopathological examination. Parafn sections were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and PAS and examined under a light microscope. Atrophy and degeneration were observed in the seminiferous tubules of diabetic group. Histology of black seed oil group sections were similar to that of control group. A signicant difference was found between the black seed oil group and the diabetes group in terms of blood glucose values. As a result, we think that Black Seed Oil ameliorates to the tissue damage caused by diabetes and the decrease in blood sugar value.

This research was conducted to study the protective effect of bee honey on the 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)- induced breast cancer in rat model. The study consisted of three groups: honey group, positive control group (PC), and negative control group (NC) to which the carcinogen was not administered. All rats were fed the diet recommended by the American Institute of Nutrition for growing rats (AIN-93G), with addition of honey (50 g/kg diet) to the honey group. All Rats were fed their diets ad libitum on 12 hours dark/light cycle. At the age of 50 days all rats in the honey and PC groups were gavaged once by the carcinogen DMBA with a dose of 80 mg/kg body Wt. After three weeks of carcinogen administration, rats were palpated weekly to detect any tumor growth. After 18 weeks, all rats were sacrificed. The palpable structures and the mammary glands along with associated lymph nodes were removed and fixed in saline formalin and prepared for histopathological examination. The results revealed that the honey group diet significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the incidence rate of mammary cancer, palpable tumor multiplicity, tumor size and weight compared to the PC group. In conclusion, multi floral honey has a protective effect against DMBA- induced mammary cancer in the initiation, promotion, and progression stages of DMBA-induced mammary carcinogenesis. However, further research is needed to reveal the mechanisms that might have contributed to the preventive effect of honey against mammary cancer.

This study aim was to determine the influence ant nest plant extract (Myrmecodia pendans) on histopathological changeof white rat liver (Rattus novergicus) due to induced with paracetamol toxic dose. This study used 24 male white rats, divided into four groups, negative control group (P0) given placebo, positive control group (P1) given paracetamol dose 250 mg / kg bw for 10 days, P2 given ant nest extract 250 mg / kg bw and paracetamol dose 250 mg / kg bw for 10 days, P3 given ants nest extract 250 mg / kg bw for seven days, then continued by giving paracetamol and ants nest extract with dose 250 mg / kg bw for ten days. After the treatment done, all the rats were dinecropsed. Liver organs were taken and processed for making histopathology preparations. Parameters examined included hemorrhage, congestion, degeneration and necrosis. The data obtained were analyzed statistically by using Kruskal Wallis test followed by Mann Whitney test. Mann Whitney test results for all categories of histopathologic changes in  hemorrhagic, congestion, degeneration, and necrosis between negative control group (P0) and positive control group (P1) were significantly different (P <0.05), between negative control (P0) with P2 and P3 there was no significant difference (P> 0,05). Afterward, between the positive control (P1) and P2 with P3 there was a significant difference (P <0.05). I can be concludedthat the administration of paracetamol dose 250 mg/kg bw for 10 days affects the histopathologic changes of white rat liver. The administration of ant nest plant extracts can reduce the side effects of toxic doses of paracetamol.

Nigella sativa (Black seed) has been recognized as one of the most popular herbs in many parts of the world for centuries and used as folk medicine to cure different kinds of diseases. Vitamin E is well known for its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been studied in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The present study was performed to determine the effect of black seed oil and Vit-E on growth performance and blood biochemistry in mice. A total of 40 mice weight between 25-27 gm were used for conducting the research. At first, the mice were randomly divided into 4 groups consisting 10 mice in each group. Group A served as the control group whereas Group B was administered black seed oil @ 0.5 ml/kg/day, Groups C was taken vitamin E @ 200 mg/kg/day and Group D was received both black seed oil @ 0.5 ml/kg/day + vitamin E @ 200 mg/kg/day respectively for 42 days. Result showed that, body weight of B, C and D group revealed a significant decrease than the control group (p<0.05). Hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC) showed a significant change in B, C and D group than the control group (p<0.05). On the other hand, Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were insignificant. The results of biochemical test explored that serum cholesterol and triglyceride value decreased significantly whereas HDL increased significantly in black seed oil, Vit-E treated groups than the control group (p<0.05). But the LDL showed no change after treatment. It could be concluded that the black seed oil and Vit-E can be used in the therapeutic strategy of obesity, anemia and coronary diseases. Asian J. Med. AbstractThe present investigation evaluates the neuroprotective effect of chlorogenic acid (CA) in alcohol-induced brain damage in neonatal rats. Ethanol (12 % v/v, 5 g/kg) was administered orally in the wistar rat pups on postnatal days (PD) 7-9. Chlorogenic acid (100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered continuously from PD 6 to 28. Cognitive function was estimated by Morris water maze (MWM) test. However, activity of acetylcholinesterase, inflammatory mediators, parameters of oxidative stress and activity of caspase-3 enzyme was estimated in the tissue homogenate of cerebral cortex and hippocampus of ethanol-exposed pups. It has been observed that treatment with CA attenuates the altered cognitive function in ethanol-exposed pups. There was a significant decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in the CA treated group compared to the negative control group. However, treatment with CA significantly ameliorates the increased oxidative stress and concentration of inflammatory mediators in the brain tissues of ethanol-exposed pups. Activity of caspase-3 enzyme was also found significantly decreased in the CA treated group compared to the negative control group. The present study concludes that CA attenuates the neuronal damage induced in alcohol exposed neonatal rat by decreasing the apoptosis of neuronal cells.

Traditional alcoholic drinks are made traditionally or conventionally and simply packed. One of the traditional alcoholic drinks in Indonesia and commonly consumed is Tuak (Palm wine). Several indigenous communities in Lombok have fermented drinks popularly known as Tuak or Arak. Palm sap which is the basic ingredient in making palm wine containing alcohol. The most common liver diseases due to alcohol abuse include fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Ethanol metabolism in liver cells can cause an increase in the production of free radicals with various mechanisms so that oxidative stress will damage liver tissue. The supply of pineapple can prevent and repair liver damage due to oxidative stress processes, especially those caused by alcohol. Markers of liver damage are SGOT and SGPT enzymes. This research is a true experiment. The total number of experimental animals used was 21 individuals, negative control rats were only given standard feed, positive control rats were given palm wine without pineapple extract and treatment group were given palm wine and pineapple extract. Palm wine and pineapple were given together with standard feed for 14 days and on day 15th, the blood of the rats was taken to check the levels of SGOT and blood SGPT. The results showed the average SGOT enzyme levels in the negative control group 117.85 U / L, in the positive control group 126.14 U / L, and the treatment group 110.71 U / L. ANOVA test shows SGOT levels of white rats have significant differences in the experiments conducted (p <0.05). Examination of SGPT enzyme levels in the negative control group obtained an average yield of 25.42 U / L, positive control 30.42 U / L, and treatment 29.14 U / L. The ANOVA test results of SGPT levels in white rats show significant differences in the experiments conducted (p <0.05).

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that can affect the male reproductive system. The condition of hyperglycemia will increase the production of ROS, causing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress causes microangiopathy, triggers cell apoptosis, interferes with spermatogenesis, thereby affecting the diameter of the seminiferous tubules. Kebar grass contains of flavonoid and vitamin E which can be used to reduce ROS reactions and inhibit oxidative stress. This research was to prove that kebar grass extract can increase diameter of the seminiferous tubules of diabetic mice. Total of 30 samples were divided into 5 groups: negative control group (K-) was given CMC-Na, positive control group (K+) was given metformin 2mg/kg, groups P1, P2 and P3 received 2mg/kg metformin and kebar grass extract with different dosages (67.5mg/kg, 135mg/kg and 270mg/kg). The treatment lasted for 35 days. On the 36th day the mice were sacrificed and the testes were taken, then histological observations were made with HE staining to measure the diameter of tubules. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the diameter of seminiferous tubules with p value=0,000. Kebar grass extract can increase the diameter of seminiferous tubules of diabetic mice.

Abstract   Airway remodelling refers to the structural changes that occur in the airway wall in asthma.  These is  irreversible changes to the airway, with damage of bronchiolus epithelium because the  airway epithelium undergoes apoptosis  as one of its manifestations. Empirically black seed has been known as bronchial asthma therapy for many years ago. The purpose of the research is to test the effect of black seed (Nigella sativa L.) extract to apoptosis of bronchiolus epithelium and apoptosis of T lymphocytes the airway bronchial asthma on asthma mouse model. Female mice were used in the expeimental laboratory research and allergic mouse model was got by given ovalbumin twice within 3 weeks intraperitoneally and 3 times per week within 6 weeks by inhalation. Black seed extract is given in 3 different dose (0,024 cc/day, 0,048 cc/day and 0,096 cc/day) for 9 weeks. Sample was chosen randomly to share it within 5 group containing 6 mice in every group ; negative control group (without any treatment, n=6), positive control group (sensitizied with ovalbumin, n=6), JH1 group (sensitizied with ovalbumin and treating with first dose of black seed extract, n=6), JH2 group (sensitizied with ovalbumin and treating with second dose of black seed extract, n=6), JH3 group (sensitizied with ovalbumin and treating with third dose of black seed extract, n=6). The parametric that is used in this research is the change in the color of the nucleus of bronchiolus epithelium and T lymphocytes the airway bronchial asthma shown the occurrence of browning apoptosis. The result shown a significant increase of apoptosis of bronchiolus epithelium on  positive control group to compare with negative control group. The apoptosis of bronchiolus  epithelium on JH1 shown an increase compare with positive control group. For JH2 and JH3 groups shown a decrease the apoptosis of bronchial epithelium compare with positive control group. And the research indicate that the unsignificant aptosis decrease were happen on  a group with positive control instead of the group with negative control. Meanwhile, on JH1 group, apoptosis decrease were happening more significantly than the positive control group does, the aptosis increases were happen on JH2 and JH3 group, but its not capable to exceeding the positive control group apoptosis amount The conclusions is the black seed (Nigella sativa L.) extract can decrease apoptosis of bronchiolus epthelium on asthma mouse model in the third dose as the best result and the doses of black seed extract that were giving to the experiment mice can not increasing the apoptosis T Lymphocyte, thus requiring further research to figure out the perfect doses to increasing against respiratory tract apoptosis T Lymphocyte.   Keyword: asthma, black seed, the apoptosis of bronchiolus epithelium, apoptosis limfosit T.
