<p>Māori, the tangata whenua (people of the land) in Aoteroa (New Zealand), have very rich, deep-seated cultural connections with wahi (place) and nature. Clients, designers and constructors alike, have begun to understand that ‘story telling’ and ‘place making’ are mutually inclusive strengths. This has seen a steadily growing trend in the New Zealand bridge landscape, where kōrero (cultural narrative) is incorporated in design and delivery of projects large and small.</p><p>The Tirohanga Whānui (panoramic views) Footbridge in Auckland is a project where kōrero is integrated into the design. The bridge is an example of architectural design through kōrero, parametric design and structural features. The 104m long three span truss hybrid has organic voids with apertures that vary in response to the stresses in the structure. With the people-focused cultural lens in mind, the bridge detailing will be discussed.</p><p>This paper will also highlight the unique features of a few bridge projects from Aotearoa (New Zealand), showing the smart and sometimes subtle connections these bridges have with nature and iwi (local community or tribe).</p><p>Fig 1. Democratising methodologies often require research partnerships in practice. Research partnerships between indigenous and non-indigenous partners are commonplace, but there is unsatisfactory guidance available to non-indigene researchers about how to approach the relationship in a way that builds solidarity with the aims of the indigenous community. Worse still, non-indigenous researchers may circumvent indigenous communities to avoid causing offense, in effect silencing those voices. In this article, we argue that the ethics of care provides a framework that can guide ethical research practice, because it attends to the political positioning of the people involved, acknowledges inequalities and aims to address these in solidarity with the community. Drawing on our research partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand, we explain how the ethics of care intertwines with Māori values, creating a synergistic and dialogic approach.

Abstract. Māori oral histories from the northern South Island of Aotearoa-New Zealand provide details of ancestral experience with tsunami(s) on, and surrounding, Rangitoto (D'Urville Island). Applying an inductive-based methodology informed by collaborative storytelling, exchanges with key informants from the Māori kin groups of Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Kuia reveal that a folk tale, published in 1907, could be compared to and combined with active oral histories to provide insights into past catastrophic saltwater inundations. Such histories reference multiple layers of experience and meaning, from memorials to ancestral figures and their accomplishments to claims about place, authority and knowledge. Members of Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Kuia, who permitted us to record some of their histories, share the view that there are multiple benefits to be gained by learning from differences in knowledge, practice and belief. This work adds to scientific as well as Maōri understandings about tsunami hazards (and histories). It also demonstrates that to engage with Māori oral histories (and the people who genealogically link to such stories) requires close attention to a politics of representation, in both past recordings and current ways of retelling, as well as sensitivities to the production of new and plural knowledges. This paper makes these narratives available to a new audience, including those families who no longer have access to them, and recites these in ways that might encourage plural knowledge development and co-existence.

Though short, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s history is rich and holds an abundance of knowledge preserved in the form of songs, beliefs, practices, and narratives that inform this country’s unique place in the world as well as the identity of its people. This paper observes that with migratory history and a heritage of colonization, the people of Aotearoa/New Zealand express three identities: indigenous, colonial and migrant, all with a claim to appropriate representation in the country’s built fabric. It discusses the current state of knowledge by looking at the history and architectural tradition manifested in Auckland, the largest and fastest-growing city in Aotearoa. It adds that further research is required to understand and develop an appropriate methodology to address Auckland’s growing multiculturalism, which lacks adequate expression.

The Social workers need to call on a broad range of sources of bodies of knowledge and respond to the complexity and its chaotic nature of situations arising in social work profession. There appears to be dire need to consider the use of (a) the theoretical knowledge into practice by being more caring and supportive with the aim of (b) disentangling the various elements of a complex system and enhancing the resilience both of the people involved and the social and organizational systems that they are inter-twined with people lives. The current acknowledgement of the bi-cultural framework by the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) is no doubt a positive move towards infusing indigenous practice frame work into dealing with the chaotic nature and complexity of the social work profession in New Zealand but still remains to be seen in actual social work practice .The purpose of this chapter is to attempt to explore the potential of infusing Indigenous bodies of knowledge into practice against the background of the complexity nature of the social work profession in a developed world like New Zealand.

AbstractIn the bi-cultural context of Aotearoa (New Zealand), engagement with stakeholders that is transparent and culturally responsive is a priority for educational research. More common research approaches in New Zealand have followed a Western euro-centric model of engagement with research participants resulting in interventions and initiatives that have not necessarily served the needs of the education sector. The authors critically analyse the researcher relationship with research participants to provide a Māori perspective to guide the engagement process as researchers enter educational communities to conduct research. Embedded with Māori ideology and knowledge, the Hei Korowai ethical research framework is a platform for insider positionality that acknowledges partnership between the researcher and the researched for the benefit of knowledge development and the educational sector.

<p><b>Many offshore islands in Aotearoa New Zealand are currently caught in their colonial past by housing non-native flora and fauna species, irrelevant buildings and fail to reference their cultural past. However, due to their close proximity to the mainland, rich native ecosystems and extensive history, offshore islands have the immediate potential to become valuable spaces that present a unique opportunity for users to become immersed in Aotearoa New Zealand’s native biodiversity and bicultural landscape. Matiu, Makaro, and Mokopuna are Pōneke Wellington’s harbour islands in the capital city of Aotearoa New Zealand. For centuries, indigenous Māori tribes occupied Matiu Island, establishing Pā sites and using them for defence and communication. However, for the past 170 years; iwi have been excluded from involvement with these Islands.</b></p> <p>Islands in indigenous Māori culture are closely associated with narratives of long waka voyages, star navigation, Kaimoana and the establishment of Pā’s, a base for Māori traditions and way of life. Therefore, many of these islands are of great cultural and historical significance to Māori, but many of these narratives and events have been forgotten or overshadowed by the later European influences.</p> <p>Set upon Matiu Island, the design aims to transform Wellington’s largest harbour island into a cultural and educational node comprised of journeys and culturally focused destinations that are influenced by narratives significant to Iwi. This design-led research explores solutions that unite Māori and the local community, through a diverse range of spaces that enable Matiu Island to become an integral part of Pōneke Wellington’s culture and identity. The design solutions explore the development of the site’s entrance, the founding of a marae and a range of spaces for traditional practices to take place which are tied together with connecting pathways that speak of the islands significant narratives. Studying the pre-colonised state of the island and its time as a Pā will provide cultural clues into how the island can embrace and convey its mauri, creating a cultural experience that aims to educate and inspire.</p>

It does this by encouraging people and communities to be disaster ready, while ensuring reduction of potential and actual harm from a disaster, responding immediately and directly following a disaster, and recovering so that there is ongoing regeneration and resiliency for the people and communities impacted by a disaster.

INTRODUCTION: According to Census 2013, approximately 25% of Auckland’s population is Asian, with the majority of these being Chinese. Given that Aotearoa New Zealand’s population is ageing, it can be expected that there will a significant demand for aged services for Chinese older adults in our local community in the future. Exploring the language barrier encountered by retired and aged (65+) Chinese migrants living in Auckland is needed.METHOD: Two focus groups were interviewed with retired Chinese migrants (group 1) and local social service practitioners (group 2). The focus group topics included the living experience of Chinese migrants in Auckland in Aotearoa New Zealand, while local social service practitioners reported their daily work experience of serving Chinese older adults. A short, warm-up, oral questionnaire stimulated discussion in each group. Data analysis was used to identify themes and draw tentative conclusions about the needs of older migrants and suggest how local aged- services providers could better serve retired Chinese migrants.FINDINGS: Language barriers and transportation problems were commonly agreed to be obstacles that hindered retired Chinese migrants accessing social support and health services. More input was needed to improve their general English language proficiency to facilitate their daily lives and participation in social life in Aotearoa New Zealand.IMPLICATIONS: Findings from the research have the potential to be an important resource for local social service practitioners, giving them a better understanding of older Chinese people.

<p>New Zealand is one of the 26 nations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) who participate in a regular refugee resettlement program (“New Zealand Refugee Quota Programme”). It is also one of the few countries to have a refugee orientation program upon arrival and dedicates a centre especially to host the incoming refugees. The current refugee quota system in New Zealand provides a 6 week orientation and assessment period followed by dispersal into 6 different cities across New Zealand for permanent resettlement.  Refugees develop friendships and a sense of comfort over the 6 weeks program with all the facilities available at the Resettlement centre. The transition from the centre into the independent housing in suburban locations therefore becomes more challenging due to the lack of induction of refugees into their host communities. Refugees are alienated in their new communities with the locals equally as oblivious to the new settlers. As a result, post settlement engagement with the host society becomes difficult for refugees. The community relations between the refugees and host society is neglected with refugees generally connecting with the same ethnic group (ii, Gray); limiting cross-cultural connections.  This research investigates the role of architecture as a facilitator of social interaction between the refugees and local community to create a strong sense of belonging in the host society. The aim is to explore architectural solutions which can ease the process of resettlement for refugees into the different regions around New Zealand. It seeks to develop a design which offers social engagement that can extend into the society and cross-cultural interaction can be encouraged.</p>
