True Noise: Defining Scenes in Toronto’s Underground Music Community

Author(s):
Jeremy Kerr

Underground music refers to genres which are not mass disseminated in the same way as mainstream styles, often due to their abrasive and lo-fi aesthetic. In large cultural centres, such as Toronto, underground music listeners develop their own communities and infrastructure – the framework of musical scenes – and seek out likeminded music fans both locally and virtually. Scholars such as Will Straw, Sarah Cohen and Holly Kruse have all developed theories concerning the development and definition of musical scenes which, while helpful, do not sufficiently examine how scenes are created and interact beyond geographically shared space. To address this gap, I have developed a theory which posits all musical scenes can be placed in one of two categories: local scenes, which are based around a specific locality and the infrastructure available for local scene participants, or super-local scenes, which are not bound by any one locality and can consist of multiple local scenes as well as independent participants. This presentation defines the Toronto underground scene as a super-local scene comprised of several smaller music scenes in the GTA. I will analyze the interactions between these local scenes, as well as with non-local participants, touring international acts, the mass media and the city authorities in order to model the structure of the super-local Toronto underground music scene. I suggest this framework will be useful to other scholars, even those outside of musicology, who are studying similar types of communities.

The main argument of this paper is that the Web is well suited for the role of a streetwise informant for protest events. Using special software, we plot the network of Web sites of organisations related to the meat and anti-globalization protests in Milau, France, in June of 2000, and compare our findings about the nature of the actors with the reports in the mass media. Not only do the findings deepen mass media accounts but they also point to a new web-sociological means to re-open the question of the real. Putting on display the institutional dimension of the protest, the Web network simultaneously undermines and enriches the mass media accounts of the protests. The Web may provide a reality check on existing accounts of the protest and document encounters between opposing definitions of reality. Our analysis also suggests the Web can be harnessed to complicate the definition of real social action.

This article highlights the role of the independent music culture of Portland, Oregon, in establishing a productive culture of consumption and spaces that contribute to the place character of the city. Derived from an ethnographic research project of urban culture and social change in Portland, Oregon, guided interviews and extended participant observation helped to bring to light the cultural economy that artists and musicians make for the city. The cultural production of Portlanders in the indie music community, and those who work and produce in neighborhood settings, has served the city in the most recent period of rapid gentrification. Many scholars have focused on the way bohemian concentrations have led to gentrification; others have highlighted the contingent labor that art makers provide. What I argue here is as the city develops in these ways, artisanal workers and music makers work to use their established networks and situated meaning in the city to fend off these processes and extend their presence in space. Through these collective strategies of empowerment, culture and music move into political discourse and affect political action on the city level.

This article explores the relation between popular music and creative cities through the example of Manchester between 1976 and 1997. The formation of a local music scene is analysed through the notion of urban creative milieu stating its historical debt to the city industrial heritage; place-images produced by the local popular music scene are analysed as visual, aural and lyrical productions. The article examines the consolidation of the considered local popular music scene through bottom-up and autonomous projects and the regeneration of some areas of Manchester. It looks at the role of the 'New Left' municipality, its difficulties in recognizing the city's creative capital and its attitude towards the production and consumption of popular music. The conclusions present some general reflections on the Manchester legacy and its significance for a definition of creativity at the urban level.

Women occupy few professional roles in electronic music scenes worldwide. In Brazil, and particularly in the city of São Paulo, female collectives have been playing an important role in raising awareness and trying to change this scenario in recent years. In order to do so, they appropriate social media as communication tools, which become relevant digital resources. Mamba Negra was founded in 2013, and was initially organized by Carolina Schutzer and Laura Diaz. They are part of a cultural movement that seeks to occupy São Paulo’s underused public spaces for festivities that embrace especially the female, queer, and black communities. Their name is that of a dangerous snake from Africa (Dendroaspis polylepis). Their considerable number of supporters is concentrated on their Facebook fan page, which had more than 38,000 followers as of April 11, 2019. The page was created on August 27, 2013. Since its origin, the page aims at sharing multimedia content related to the collective’s activities, such as events (mostly performances and parties), their online radio show, and photos and videos from specific artists. Bandida Coletivo is a collective of female DJs, event and music producers, photographers, and graphic artists that was created in 2016 with the aim of building safe spaces for women within the electronic music scene, not only to experiment with their art, but also to obtain more visibility and professional participation in events. Their name can be translated as “Female Bandit Collective,” and they are especially addressed to an audience of women from the outskirts of São Paulo. Their Instagram profile, @bandidacoletivo, is their preferred outlet in social media. It was created in December 2016 and had almost 2,400 followers as of April 24, 2019. It is filled with pictures and videos from different events they promote, such as parties and workshops, and their DJs’ performances.

Islamophobia written by Karen Armstrong, John L. Esposito, Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid, et al (published by Mizan in 2018) explains how Islamophobia still afflicts some groups, including Westerners (Americans and Europeans). The causes are the materialization of the phenomenon of terrorism, ISIS, and wahabism which are considered as radical. Such representations are established by the mass media. The definition of Islam in the Western media is closely related to the distortion of meaning, sentiment and stigma. Though, some write objective defense for Islam.

The article deals with the problems of searching missing persons and inviolability of private life of a person, namely, how proportionate, and reasonable is the publication of sensitive data of a person in the mass media when disappearance of a person reported. Analysis of the statistical indicators of the searching of missing persons gives basis for the conclusion that a significant number (80%) of persons reported as missed, in fact they are not such, but without warning their relatives were absent for various reasons – somewhere stayed late, left their place of residence for other reasons, went abroad. Nevertheless, photographs and other sensitive data of such persons are published in the mass media. Moreover, there was an opinion on the need to bring to administrative responsibility those who left the place of residence without warning their relatives. On the author’s opinion, one of the reasons for the unjustified use of the media for searching for persons and violating the privacy of a person is the poor performance of the preliminary searching measures for clarify the circumstances and causes of disappearance. The article also proposes to amend the definition of the missing person, clarify the essence of the notion of “to declare a search”, the procedure and officials authorized to declare such a search, and also introduce the category “Persons who have lost contact with relatives”.
