The growth and initial development of the plant greatly determines the survival of the plant at the next stage. This initial phase is also the most sensitive phase of abiotic stress. The level of viability and vigor to produce normal sprouts can explain the success of germination. The aim of this research is to study the temperature change to viabilily and vigor in four rice varieties. Research started from January to February 2018 at Seed Technology and Plant Physiology Laboratory Andalas University and Chemistry Laboratory University Of Padang. This research applies Factorial Experiment in Completely Random Design, where the first factor is four levels of rice varieties, Anak Daro, Batang Piaman, Cisokan and Inpari 30. The second factor is temperature level, 28 0C, 32 0C, 36 0C, 40 0C, 44 0C and 48 0C. Viability and vigor decrease when temperature increase. The optimum temperature for rice germination is 28-32 0 C for Anak Daro, 28-36 0 C for Cisokan, at 28 0 C for Batang Piaman and Inpari 30. Anak Daro and Inpari 30 can germinate until 40 0C. The highest vigor index value at 28 0 C in Cisokan and Inpari 30 (89,33 %). At 28-32 0C Cisokan, Batang Piaman and Inpari 30 has been able to germinate on the second day after planting, but Anak Daro can normal germinate on the third day after planting.

High temperatures can affect plant morphophysiological changes and enzyme denaturation that can interfere with the germination process. This research aims to study the effect of temperature changes on the α-amylase enzyme activity of several rice varieties germination. The research applies Factorial Experiment in Completely Random Design, where the first factor is four levels of rice varieties, Anak Daro, Batang Piaman, Cisokan, and Inpari 30. The second factor is temperature level, 28 0C, 32 0C, 36 0C, 40 0C, 44 0C and 48 0C. Results showed that the activity of the α -amylase enzymes of the four varieties increased when the temperature increased to reach the optimal temperature, and denaturation began to occur above that temperature.  The highest enzyme activity of α-amylase of Anak Daro, Cisokan and Inpari 30 varieties at 48 0C is 0,14 micromol, 0,365 micromol dan 0,191 micromol. In contrast the optimum enzyme activity of α-amylase of Batang Piaman variety at a temperature of 40 0C is 0,237 micromol and when the temperature rises to 48 0C a decrease in the activity of the α-amylation enzyme is 0,138 micromol. The variation in the activity of α-amylase enzymes in the four varieties is probably due to genetic differences and sucrose content. The Batang Piaman and Cisokan varieties can only germinate up to 36 0C, while the Daro and Inpari 30 varieties can germinate up to 40 0C.

Rice demand will continuously increase along with population growth rate. At now needs of rice seed in Central Java can not be fulfill it. The majority of rice seed in Indonesia is supplied by seed producers or seed company. PP Kerja is one of private rice seed producer who contribute to fulfill rice seed demand in Central Java. To increase rice seed productivity, research on rice harvesting at various stages of maturity to produce maximum quantity and yield quality in PP Kerja is important. Rice harvest at physiological maturity will produce maximum growth rate and seed vigour, and also plant growth in the field so that it will increase the yields. This research was done in June 2017 until December 2017 in rice field of PP Kerja, seed technology laboratory, and greenhouse. This experimental design research used was split plot design with the maturity stages as the main plot and the length of storage as the sub plot with 3 blocks as repetition. Maturity stage consists of four stages there were yellow maturity ½ of panicles, yellow maturity ¾ of panicles, full yellow maturity of panicles, and harvest recommendation at now. Storage length consists of four levels there were 0 month, 1 month, 2 month, 3 month. The data were analyzed with variance analysis at 5% of different level followed by HSD test, optimum maturity was determined with regression analysis at 5% of significance level. Results of the research showed that harvesting at full yellow maturity of panicles produces the highest harvest weight and dry storage weight, and also the best storability there are maximum physiological quality such as germination, vigour index, leaf area, plant height, number of leaves, and hypothetical vigour index.

The experiment was carried out in the Seed Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Gazipur during June to July 2014 to investigate the effects of different priming methods on seed germination and the seedling growth of some rice (Oryza sativa L.)  varieties. Four rice varieties: 1) Nerica, 2) BRRI dhan51, 3) BRRI dhan41 and 4) BRRI dhan49; and six priming treatments: 1) On-farm Priming, 2) Hardening, 3) Hydro-priming, 4) Osmo-hardening, 5) Vitamin C Priming and 6) Control were used in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). The treatments were replicated three times. The germination percentage and seedling growth parameters differed significantly among the priming treatments. For germination, Nerica variety showed poor performance, whereas the other varieties were found superior. Among the priming treatments, Vitamin C priming and Osmo-hardening were found superior. In case of interaction, germination was increased with Vitamin C priming and Osmo-hardening in Nerica. For seedling growth parameters, particularly vigor index, shoot and root lengths, BRRI dhan41 and BRRI dhan51 were found superior. The priming treatment Vitamin C and Osmo-hardening performed better than others.  Seedling vigor index was increased with Vitamin C priming and Osmo-hardening in Nerica variety. Shoot length at 15th day was influenced by hydro-priming in Nerica. Root length at 10th day was significantly increased with hardening in BRRI dhan41. Vitamin C priming and Osmo-hardening could therefore, be used for improving germination and seedling growth of Nerica. The Agriculturists 2018; 16(1) 34-43

Sixteen genotypes of rice (including one check) were evaluated on 18 quantitative traits during sali (August), 2018 in a randomized block design with three replications at Instruction cum Research Farm, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat to study the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability and genetic advance under delayed sown condition. The analysis of variance for 18 quantitative traits revealed the presence of significant differences for grain yield and its component characters. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was observed for chaffs per panicle followed by grains per panicle, spikelet sterility (%), spikelets per panicle, grain yield (kg/ha). A high heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for plant height (cm), spikelets per panicle, spikelet sterility (%), chaffs per panicle, grains per panicle, grain yield (g/hill), grain yield (kg/ha), biological yield (kg/ha), straw weight (kg/ha) and harvest index (%) indicating that selection might be effective for improvement of these characters under delayed sown condition with low input. From the findings of this investigation, one genotype viz., Gandhari emerged as the outstanding genotype which yielded 4170 kg/ha and could be directly used for cultivation in delayed sown situation with low inputs. Some other promising genotypes that yielded higher than the check Manoharsali under delayed sown condition were JR 29, JR 16, Basundhara and JR 60 and could be utilized as potential parental material in the hybridization programmes designed to develop suitable rice varieties for delayed sown situation.

A total of 110 rice varieties of which 108 local (From Bangladesh Rice Research Institute) and two hybrid varieties (From ACI Ltd. Bangladesh) were used to identify the morphological traits during July, 2008 to June, 2009. These varieties represented four types viz. T. Aman (n=92), B. Aman (n=15), Boro (n=2) and Jhum accession (n=1) as described by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute’s literature. Though all these materials were varied ecotypically but grown in one (T. Aman) season. Irrespective of groups of all, 90 varieties were appeared distinctly morphologically from others due to seed colour; stigma colour; anthocyanin colouration of leaf sheath, nodes and lemma:palea, presence of awn and nodal root. Among 90 distinct varieties 19 were distinctly different from others by four traits, nine by three traits, 24 by two traits and 38 varieties by only single trait. The rest 20 varieties were distinguished flag leaf: attitude of the leaf blade. This was done to assess the quality traits of distinctness as major concern and was noninfluenced by the environment. Rice (Oryza sativa L) is the most important staple food crop in Nepal, but current yields are low and total production varies, mostly due to drought. To evaluate high yielding and drought tolerant rice genotypes in typical rainfed lowland conditions, a participatory varietal selection trials was conducted with farmers in farmer’s field at Sundarbazar, Lamjung, Nepal during the wet season 2009 and 2010. Trials were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with six replications. Results obtained from two years’ experiment indicated that the genotypes IR-74371-54-1 and IR74371-70-1 matured at the same duration as the local check Radha-4 (120-123 days growth duration). Both genotypes had a high average chlorophyll content (SPAD reading of 15.9-16.1), were medium tall (110-112 cm), non-lodging, had a high number of filled grains and little sterility, and a high grain yield (mean yield 5.0 and 4.8 t ha-1, respectively). They also had the highest root length (22.4-26.2 cm) and root weight (9.5-10 g hill-1) which could tolerate more drought than the other genotypes tested. The maximum cost/benefit ratio was found in IR-74371-54-1 (1:1.72) followed by IR-74371-70-1 (1:1.66) and IR-74371-46-1-1 (1:1.65). All three lines were highly preferred by farmers in preference rankings during field visits and were released in Nepal in 2011 as Sookhadhan-2, Sookhadhan-3 and Sookhadhan-1 varieties, respectively. They fit easily into the existing cropping system in rainfed lowlands, are economically viable and safe to cultivate for the farmers in the mid hills of Nepal.Journal of the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science.Vol. 33-34, 2015, page: 195-206

The study aimed to examine the response of upland rice varieties at germination stage on several PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) 6000 concentration levels and to determine growth characteristics, physiological changes and yield of upland rice varieties under drought stress condition in a pot experiment. The study consisted of two experiments; the first was to study germination and early growth, and the second was to study the vegetative and generative growth of upland rice under drought stress condition. Experiments I and II were conducted in a completely randomized factorial design consisted of two factors and three replications. In experiments I, the first factor was upland rice variety comprised of 10 varieties and the second factor was PEG concentration consisted of four levels. In experiment II, the first factor was upland rice varieties that responded the best to drought stress in experiment I, and the second factor was the drought stress treatment consisted of moisture content at 100, 75, 50 and 25% field capacity. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Biotechnology and the greenhouse of Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta. The results showed that the germination and vigor index decreased with increasing levels of PEG concentration. PEG concentration of 25 g L-1 of water was the most optimum for screening drought resistant upland rice. In experiment I, Towuti, Situ Patengang, Kalimutu and Gajah Mungkur varieties showed the best response to drought stress. Increased intensity of drought stress resulted in a reduction of plant height, number of tillers, dry weight, relative growth rate, leaf area, number of grains hill-1, 1000 grain weight, dry grain weight hill-1 and root dry weight. The drought stress also caused an earlier flowering date and increased percentage of empty grain. Based on the dry grain weight hill-1, Towuti exhibited a higher drought resistance level than Gajah Mungkur, Situ Patenggang and Kalimutu.

Identification and characterization of crop varieties are crucial for ensuring the genetic purity of seeds. The present investigation was carried out to identify suitable chemical methods that are fast, reliable and easy for seed analysts, breeders and seed producers for identification of a variety. Twenty-five popular rice varieties in the seed supply chain of Tamil Nadu were subjected to phenol, modified phenol, NaOH, aroma, gelatinization temperature (alkali spreading value), GA3 and 2,4-D tests. The results of the experiment revealed that phenol and modified phenol tests changed the colour of TKM 9 and TRY 1 variety to brown but no colour change was observed in the variety I.W. Ponni variety. The NaOH test is useful for the identification of TKM 9 variety as it changed the colourless solution to red. GA3 and 2,4-D tests characterized the varieties based on the shoot growth into two and three groups respectively. However, all the variety lacked aroma and exhibited a high gelatinization temperature.
