The Phonics method brings more logic into the correspondence between English pronunciation and spelling. Therefore, it might be beneficial for learners with special educational needs (namely dyslexia). The study investigates the effectiveness of the Phonics method in teaching English pronunciation to young non-native learners comparing the achievement of the intact and the integrated learners. The Phonics method was applied for five months in the experimental group, and other, more traditional methods for teaching EFL pronunciation were applied in the control group at an elementary school in Slovakia. Both groups consisted of the intact and the integrated learners (experimental group: 19 intact and 2 integrated learners; control group: 17 intact and 2 integrated learners). The learners underwent a dictation and a reading test in pre-test and post-test, and the results indicate the benefit of the Phonics method for all learners with significant improvement among learners with dyslexia. The integrated learners՚ improvement rate was nearly six times (dictation)/three times (reading test) higher in the experimental group than in the control group.

Preserving Indonesian as a national identity and institutional readiness to perform the national curriculum 2013 instruction has become a critical factor in the exclusion of English as a compulsory subject at the elementary school level. This leaves rooms for teachers’ confusion and creativity, leading to various practices at different school clusters, depending on parental demands and school readiness. This study thus tries to cast light on the social agency demand and inter-school readiness for young learners in the Indonesian EFL pedagogical contexts. This instrumental case study portrays the practices of English language teaching at three clusters of Indonesian primary schools; local, national, and independent, as well as responses of parents and students to these practices. Involving 4-6 grade students and English teachers of six primary schools, the data were garnered through classroom observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings revealed that although teaching English to young learners is somehow communicative and fun, it more emphasises  literacy skills (reading, writing, and grammar), particularly at local schools as the majority cluster across the country. Since English is a non-phonetic language, this literacy-focused practice is rather contradictory to what parents as social agencies expect, that is, to develop their children’s English oral proficiency. The study also offers ways by which teachers and schools can accommodate this social agency’s needs for speaking skills by focusing more on student-centred and oral English proficiency activities and assessment.

Along with this, a sample of sixty students was drawn from a total of three hundred seventy-eight students using lottery method of sampling technique. Physics achievement test (pre-test and post-test) covering the unit ‘’Introduction to Electronics’’ was used as measuring instrument. Then, based on the pre-test scores, mixed ability groups such as fifteen high and fifteen low scoring 30 students each were assigned as experimental (13Fand17M) and control(15 and15M) groups using lottery method of sampling technique Students in the experimental group were taught using problem solving teaching method while those in the control group were instructed with lecture teaching method. The post-test constructed by the writer in the sample unit taught was administrated to both groups immediately after the treatment was over. Although often taking part in seminars and workshops on how to teach English to their students, it seems that elementary school teachers of English (though not all) do not really implement what they have received in their classrooms. The seminar that the English Department of Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University held on the 8th of August 2015 was a workshop where the participants, the elementary school teachers of English, were trained to demonstrate how to use drama, storytelling, games and songs as techniques in teaching English to their students. They were expected to be able to use these techniques in their respective classrooms. The techniques became the alternatives to the current techniques being practiced at schools to enliven the learning atmosphere. Therefore, this study which is the third level or the last level of our project on developing an English handbook for English teachers at elementary schools, is in the form of an observational study describing how the teachers implemented the techniques -- drama, storytelling, games and songs -- in their respective classrooms, students’ responses and   what problems took place when the teachers were carrying out the techniques. The results show that the teachers were able to teach those techniques in their classes, students actively took part more actively in their English class, and they liked games and songs much.
