This book provides a survey of different ways in which economic sociocultural and political aspects of human progress have been studied since the time of Adam Smith. Inevitably, over such a long time span, it has been necessary to concentrate on highlighting the most significant contributions, rather than attempting an exhaustive treatment. The aim has been to bring into focus an outline of the main long-term changes in the way that socioeconomic development has been envisaged. The argument presented is that the idea of socioeconomic development emerged with the creation of grand evolutionary sequences of social progress that were the products of Enlightenment and mid-Victorian thinkers. By the middle of the twentieth century, when interest in the accelerating development gave the topic a new impetus, its scope narrowed to a set of economically based strategies. After 1960, however, faith in such strategies began to wane, in the face of indifferent results and general faltering of confidence in economists’ boasts of scientific expertise. In the twenty-first century, development research is being pursued using a research method that generates disconnected results. As a result, it seems unlikely that any grand narrative will be created in the future and that neo-liberalism will be the last of this particular kind of socioeconomic theory.

This article focuses on how social capital, in the form of trust, reciprocal relations, and networks, has contributed to the sustainability of local communities in Kazakhstan in the face of various political and socioeconomic challenges. Drawing on qualitative data, we provide historical evidence of the persistence of locally derived social capital and investigate the ways in which it contributed to local sustainability in Kazakhstan. We first discuss how people in Kazakhstan have historically built and developed networks, reciprocal relations, and mutual trust under different political and economic institutions, for example, in the form of reciprocal labor aid as part of nomadic culture (e.g., “Asar”) and collective funds (e.g., “Kotel”) during Soviet times. We then offer an in-depth understanding of social capital as a form of insurance for local communities, and how it facilitates socioeconomic interactions in contemporary Kazakh society. This study contributes to the understanding of this traditional sense of trust and communal cooperation, as well as its viability in the context of a market economy.

The candidates of the Democratic Party and the Republican Partyin the face of the socio-economic changes. An analysis based on the example of presidential elections of 2008 and 2012American society has been the subject of many changes in recent years. In this context, important was an increasing liberalization of communities of large cities. But also, as a response to this process, there could be seen a growing influence of the conservative Tea Party supporters. Changes in the national structure consisting of reducing the share of white community for African Americans and immigrants are also noticeable. Important implications also caused the recent economic crisis resulting in differentiation of the standard of living of different social groups. It is therefore interesting to analyze how two major American parties responded to these changes. The ground for such an analysis are especially presidential elections because of the importance that the head of state has in the policy of the United States.

The article discusses a number of problems and prospects for the development of competition in the context of the growing digitalization of the Russian economy. It is noted that the digital economy is becoming a relatively independent environment for the economic life of business entities. The reaction of the state, business and the population caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic served as a catalyst to accelerate the digitalization of the economy.Largely, this acceleration was due to the ineffectiveness of standard measures to combat the pandemic, which made it necessary to revise the “frame of reference” for the development of the economy as a whole, to adjust the traditional approaches to antimonopoly regulation.According to the authors, the modern economic policy of Russia should be aimed at preserving and developing domestic entrepreneurship interested in developing the national economic environment, using profits for the development of domestic markets. This approach creates the preconditions for the growth of a national socially responsible business focused on competing in foreign markets. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to update the existing legal instruments (including using the mechanism provided for by the National Plan for the Development of Competition in the Russian Federation) in the field of antimonopoly control, tariff regulation, public procurement in order to ensure the growth of the competitiveness of Russian goods (including services) in foreign markets.

Romania's EU integration has determined major economic changes, including the transition to a functional market economy which meant the existence of a competitive environment, free commercial exchanges, and free movement of people, capital, and services. To solve the existent delays, Romania has benefit from the European Community's funds for investment in agriculture and rural areas through the financial mechanism which assures non-reimbursable funds for farmers, private societies, and local authorities. Without claiming that we are exhausting the issue of financing in Romanian agriculture, the topic addressed brings some issues regarding the financing under the National Rural Development Program (NRDP) and the possible explanations of the low absorption rate of these funds. NRDP is a program which allow people to access non-reimbursable funds from EU and Romanian Government for economic and social development of the rural area.
