Studies have shown that there are only a few canonical axes of tooth size variation in the permanent dentition. Despite the numerous measurements that might be taken (e.g., crown length and breadth of 32 teeth = 64 variables), most of the canonical structure is explained by 3 or 4 overarching axes of variation. This study used maximum likelihood components of variance analysis to determine where the major sources of statistical variation are among the crown dimensions in the permanent dentition. Mesiodistal and buccolingual crown dimensions were measured on all permanent teeth (excluding M3s and averaging sides) in 100 American whites and 100 American blacks, evenly divided by sex. The SAS program varcomp estimated the sources of variation across 7 aspects of the dentition, namely race, sex, arcade, tooth (incisor, canine, premolar, molar), position (mesial, distal), dimension (MD, BL), and a residual term. Most variation is shared; residual variance was just 21.8% of the total. Considering the six components of shared variance, the greatest (82.8%) was due to tooth type (I, C, P, M). In contrast, only 4.9% was attributable to the black-white race difference, which confirms results of other biological data that the preponderance of variation is within groups, not among them. More striking is the lack of variation between males and females (1.2%)—confirming the insensitivity of tooth crown dimensions for forensic purposes. Very little shared variance (0.6%) was due to tooth position, indicating that the mesial “pole” tooth that is metrically and morphologically more stable does not possess much more informational content statistically. Whether the tooth was maxillary or mandibular accounted for 6.9%. In a practical sense, the large variance due to tooth type implies that dental anthropologists commonly will want to include variables from all tooth types (I, C, P, M) rather than multiple measurements within a tooth type, since tooth type is the canonical axis of variation.

Background: The purpose of this study was to gather normative data on the mesio-distal crown dimensions amongst adolescent population of Province II, Nepal, to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontics. It will also be useful in various clinical disciplines of dentistry including basic dental and anthropological research. Materials and Methods: Samples were selected Full form OPD of M B Kedia Dental College, Birgunj, Nepal. Total numbers of participants were 120, out of which 60 males and 60 females were selected after initial examination aged between 11 to 23 years. Subjects with all permanent teeth erupted (except second and third molar) without any history of previous orthodontic treatment and with no dental anomalies were included in this study. The alginate impressions were made by the well trained dental surgeon. Digital vernier calliper providing measurements to ± 0.01millimeter(mm) was used to measure the mesio-distal dimension of all teeth. Results: The mean, range and standard deviation were calculated for the size of the teeth. Independent t-test was used to compare between male and female population. The significance level was set at p value <= 0.05. The population of Province II, Nepal shows greater sexual dimorphism in mesio-distal crown dimension which was exhibited by the maxillary molars (0.88 mm) followed by mandibular molars (0.38 mm). Similarly in anterior tooth segment the maxillary canines (0.29 mm) followed by the mandibular canines (0.27 mm). Conclusion: The mean mesio-distal crown dimensions of the permanent dentition of males were larger than that of females for each type of tooth except maxillary central and lateral incisor.

Eruption constants for the permanent dentition were determined in 212 mongoloid children and 124 of their unaffected sibs. Eruption of the permanent teeth in sibs was like that of other normal children. Mongoloid children resembled their sibs in general characteristics of tooth eruption, but showed a consistent tendency toward later mean ages of eruption for each tooth type.

Three aspects of metric variation in the permanent dentition of humans are often simply accepted as true. The first is that formation of the permanent dentition occurs within morphogenetic fields broadly associated with tooth type and jaw. The second is that dental development of among females is characterized by a higher degree of ontogenetic buffering relative to males. The third is that expression of sex dimorphism in permanent tooth size is expressed uniformly among well-nourished human populations. This study tests these assumptions through an examination of mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions of all non-canine permanent teeth, except third molars, among 2,709 living individuals of 15 ethnic groups from South Asia. With sexes pooled, only one in four contrasts of variance among key versus distal teeth within dental fields are significantly heterogeneous, while one in four contrasts yield higher levels of variance among key teeth relative to their distal counterparts within a dental field. Such results weaken considerably orthodox applications of Butler’s dental field theory. When samples are the unit of analysis, male samples are marked by fewer dental fields with significantly heterogeneous levels of variance between key and distal members, while males and females are affected equally by significantly heterogeneous variation between key and distal members when dental fields are the unit of analysis. Such results suggest males and females are equally buffered against environmental perturbations that affect odontometric variation. One-way ANOVA indicates that a tooth’s position within a dental field ac-counts for 15.5% to 23.1% of the observed varia-tion in tooth size, while two-way ANOVA reveals that when sex is added as a second factor, the percentage of variance in tooth size explained increases from 16.7% to 30.8%, an improvement of 27.2%. Such results indicate sex dimorphism in tooth size varies in both patterning and in magnitude among these samples, thereby explaining why discriminant functions developed for one population often perform more poorly when applied to other populations.

Mesiodistal crown dimensions of the permanent dentition were assessed in a Nigerian population. The study sample consisted of 54 dental casts of Nigerian subjects (33 males; 21 females) with a mean age of 26.6 (sd = 2.1) years. The subjects had their permanent teeth present and fully erupted from first molar to first molar, no interproximal caries or restorations and no abnormal tooth sizes or shapes. Descriptive statistics are provided. Sex differences in the means and comparisons with the means from other population were evaluated using t-tests. Results revealed no statistically significant difference in mesiodistal crown dimensions between the sexes and no left to right side tooth size discrepancy in the sample. The study provides normative data on the mesiodistal crown dimensions of Nigerian subjects. Compared to African Americans, crown dimensions tended to be smaller in these Nigerians, especially in males.

Relevance. Characteristics of eruption of secondary teeth is of diagnostic and prognostic interest, is the basis for implementation of targeted therapeutic and preventive measures among children. No research has ever been carried out in Uzbekistan to study an age and gender regional features of secondary teeth eruption. The aim is to determine the timing and symmetry of secondary teeth eruption in children of the city of Tashkent of the Republic of Uzbekistan and comparative assessment with the children of different cities of Russia.Materials and methods. 3,834 children between 3 and 17 years were conducted dental examination. A comparative analysis was made of the initial, intermediate and final periods of eruption of secondary teeth for children of Uzbekistan (Tashkent city) and Russia (Saratov, Izhevsk and Sergach).Results. In Tashkent children of both gender, in most cases, lower teeth were erupted before than their antagonists. In girls, teeth were erupted earlier than their male counterparts. At the initial stage of eruption, asymmetry was more pronounced in boys than in girls, while in the middle and final stages it was more pronounced in the opposite direction. Observed asymmetry of antimere’s teeth were indicated left-handed permanent dentition in boys and right-handed in girls. Children of Tashkent city were observed permanent dentition in one group of teeth 1-16 months earlier, and in others – 1-24 months later than their peers in Russian cities. Revealed differences were more pronounced among boys than among girls. Children in Tashkent differed more from their peers in Sergach and less from those in Izhevsk. Conclusions. Regional peculiarities of permanent dentition in children of Tashkent city and revealed expressed differences with indicators of Russian children are the basis for development of separate age and  gender normative assessment permanent dentition tables for children of Uzbekistan.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is defined as an interruption of enamel formation due to genetic inheritance. To prevent malfunction of the masticatory system and an unaesthetic appearance, various treatment options are described. While restoration with a compomer in the anterior region and stainless steel crowns in the posterior region is recommended for deciduous dentition, the challenges when treating such structural defects in mixed or permanent dentition are changing teeth and growing jaw, allowing only temporary restoration. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate oral rehabilitation from mixed to permanent dentition. The dentition of a 7-year-old patient with AI type I and a 12-year-old patient with AI type II was restored under general anesthesia to improve their poor aesthetics and increase vertical dimension, which are related to problems with self-confidence and reduced oral health quality of life. These two cases show the complexity of dental care for structural anomalies of genetic origin and the challenges in rehabilitating the different phases of dentition.

The purpose of this report is to present educational material that would allow the dental student to learn to easily identify the morphologic characteristics of permanent teeth, and how they fit together (occlusion). In order to do this, macro models of permanent teeth with no attrition were carved in wax and later molded with alginate. These molds were filled with plaster, dental stone and/or cold-cured acrylic resin. The large individual dental stone tooth models were mounted on a wax base, thus obtaining maxillary and mandibular arches which were occluded. These dental arches were molded with plaster or dental stone. The authors suggest that these types of macro models allow an excellent visualization of the morphologic characteristics of permanent teeth and occlusion. Dental students are able to carve the permanent dentition in wax with great facility when they can observe macro models.

This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the dental trauma profile in primary and permanent teeth from patients between 0 and 15 years old who attended the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Data regarding gender, age, trauma classification, tooth type, and affected tissues were obtained from dental records. The data were analyzed descriptively and by the χ2 test (p &lt; 0.05). Data associated with 333 traumatized teeth (70% primary and 30% permanent teeth) were included. The mean ages of children with affected primary and permanent teeth were 3.35 ± 2.02 and 9.09 ± 2.43 years, respectively. Males presented more permanent teeth with trauma (64.4%) than primary ones (55.6%; p = 0.085). The upper central incisors, both primary (68.9%) and permanent (69.4%), were the teeth most commonly affected. Primary teeth showed a higher frequency (p &lt; 0.001) of supportive tissue trauma (73.3%) and lower frequency (p = 0.001) of hard tissue trauma (40.7%) than those in permanent ones (51.5% and 60.6%, respectively). The most frequent trauma in the supportive tissue was subluxation (27.2%) and permanent lateral luxation (42.0%). In the hard tissues, permanent teeth presented a higher prevalence of trauma than primary ones (p = 0.001), however this difference was not statistical significant when each type of fracture injury was evaluated individually (p &gt; 0.005). With affected primary teeth, there was a greater frequency of trauma in the gingival mucosa (31.0%; p = 0.022); in the permanent ones, traumatic lesions in the chin region were the most prevalent (20.8%; p = 0.009). Trauma was recurrent in 26.3% of primary teeth and in 20.2% permanent teeth. Therefore, primary and permanent teeth showed distinct trauma profiles, suggesting that distinct preventive and therapeutic approaches are needed for these two groups.

Objectives: To define the prevalence of dehiscence and fenestration and classify them in terms of the localization of fenestrations in a random sampled group of children and adolescent patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).Methods:  CBCT performed at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of patients referred by the paediatric dentistry clinic were included in this retrospective study. Image evaluations were performed by dentomaxillofacial radiologist (AA, asst. prof.), and these images were examined in three dimensions of the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. Intraexaminer agreement for the evaluations were found acceptable. The presence/absence of dehiscence and/or fenestration, fenestration’s classification type, and localization of defects were recorded. Moreover, the presence/absence of periapical lesion in related root with dehiscence and fenestration was noted. For statistical analysis, The Chi-Square test, Fisher Freeman Halton Test, and Yates' Continuity of Correction were used.Results: 3061 roots in 1801 teeth of 120 cases were analyzed. The mean age was 9.97±2.22 years. Dehiscence was detected in 261(8.5%) roots of 161(8.9%) teeth, and fenestration was detected 63(2%) roots of 36(2%) teeth. The most common fenestration type was Type I, followed by Type II and IV. Dehiscence was observed more frequently in primary teeth than permanent teeth, and the difference was statistically significant (p:0.000). Dehiscence and fenestration incidence in maxillary teeth was significantly higher than in the mandibular teeth (pdehiscence:0.000, pfenestration:0.004). Apical lesions were observed more in primary teeth than permanent teeth for both defects.Conclusions: This study concludes that alveolar dehiscence and fenestrations are more common in primary teeth than permanent teeth. Moreover, these defects were detected more for the teeth in the maxilla. Concerning endodontic and orthodontic therapies in maxilla, use of CBCT is useful in determining the region's anatomical structure accurately in suspected cases of child and adolescent patients.

Objective: The objective is to analyze the influence of nutrition on permanent dentition processes in children of early and middle childhood age.Methods: The study of the permanent dentition time periods in children going to municipal budgetary educational institutions of Vladivostok was performed. The sanitary audit of everyday nutrition was carried out. The causeeffect relations between nutrition and permanent dentition were identified.Results: First permanent teeth started erupting in girls in 4.5 y.o. The analysis showed children nutrition deficiency and imbalance in nutrient content of their diets. The portion of nutrition factor influence on permanent dentition in girls of early childhood age was 36.0 ±3.2Influence of nutrition on permanent dentition in children living in Vladivostok, in boys of early childhood age – 38.4±3.7 %, in girls of middle childhood age – 36.0±4.4 %, in boys of middle childhood – 36.0±0.2 %.Conclusion: The nutrient deficiency and dietary imbalance of a child serves as risk factors of the permanent dentition disorders. Developing a diet for children it is important to consider their physiological requirements at each age with mandatory inclusion of products containing sufficient amount of macroand microelements.
