The article tackles the problem of improving mathematical communication in a group of students with different visual impairment levels, under the guidance of a group leader or a teacher. Visually impaired persons face a problem while learning mathematics. The said problem results from the specific nature in which mathematical content (formulas, function graphs, geometrical figures and projections of solids) is recorded and presented. The effectiveness of learning mathematics is boosted when students work in a group moderated by a leader. This requires them to share documents, with the leader being able to keep track of the individual work of each participant, and with the group discussing specific solutions. In order for a visually impaired student to be able to participate in and contribute to the work of the group, either remotely or locally, all participants must use universal IT tools that support visually impaired students without complicating the work of others. This paper presents interactive multimedia solutions developed under two research projects carried out by the author. The said solutions support communication in mathematics. Results of qualitative surveys on new solutions are presented, confirming their usefulness and the measurable impact they exert on the efficiency of the group’s work concerning mathematical problems.

Patients with age-related visual loss suffer reduced ability to recognize faces and other scenes in photographs and on television. Recently, progress has been made in image enhancement, using controlled distortion of digitally stored images that increases their usefulness in particular applications. Described are two approaches to image enhancement for the visually impaired. In one approach, the visual losses that characterize individual patients and disease classes are described using detailed measurements of visual degradation transfer functions, which are profiles of loss of image information at various spatial scales. The particular distortion used for image enhancement is then adjusted to the impairment of the individual patient or disease class. A second approach takes advantage of the resemblance between the visual losses of many patients and the degradation of picture information in other applications due to external limitations (e.g., fog and haze) on photography. Several enhancement algorithms have been found useful with such images and may also improve picture recognition by the visually impaired.

Language has been the most popular source of communication in human society since the start of civilization. The tradition of Folk Tales appeared as the foundation of literature in ancient times. Poetry is a significant way of expression in human literature. Urdu language possesses uncountable master pieces of prose and poetry. Visually impaired persons have proved themselves as literature lovers, good readers and visionary poets in past and present. This study is an effort to depict the awareness level of visually impaired college students about Urdu poets and their creations. The population of the study consisted of all visually impaired students enrolled in public and private sector colleges located in the district Lahore and Okara. A self developed and validated structured interview schedule containing 10 open ended questions was used to collect data from conveniently selected sample of 30 visually impaired students (males= 18, females=12). Descriptive statistics (percentages of responses) were calculated, collected information was coded; major themes were derived and interpreted by qualitative data analysis technique. The Study reflected that the visually impaired college students were having a lot of information about Urdu poets and their creations although there seemed a lack of in depth knowledge. They reported the lack of talking books and material in Braille on Urdu poetry of great and famous poets. They suggested the establishment of talking libraries throughout the country. Major findings were reported, conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made to Punjab Higher Education Department.

The following study presents an overview of career development needs of blind and visually impaired individuals and discusses results of a 1983–84 survey of school teachers (grades K, 3, 6, 9 and 12), rehabilitation counselors, management staff of rehabilitation agencies and agency administrators that assessed career development needs of severely visually impaired persons and resources available to meet those needs. Individuals surveyed felt that their students or clients need greater accessibility to career development tasks, experiences, and resources, and that none of the resources listed in the survey are readily accessible now, and many are inaccessible. Four basic conclusions are discussed.

Mathematics is an important subject to be learned by all children. Visually impaired children experience obstacles in following the process of mathematics learning caused by abnormalities. Visually impaired students experience obstacles in the process of thinking at the disequilibrium stage and low understanding of concepts when studying mathematics. It caused them to experience difficulties when doing math problems. Assistive technology is a technology created specifically to improve or maintain the functional ability of children with special needs in order to accomplish tasks that hard for them to do. Assistive technology for visually impaired children is made by maximizing the abilities that the children still possess and helping them to get a clearer mathematical concept. This article is a literary study which aims to provide information about the difficulty for the visually impaired students in mathematics learning and assistive technologies that have been developed to support the learning. This article can be used as the basis for developing new assistive technology in mathematics learning. Assistive technology is needed to help children with visual impairment in following the learning of mathematics and to optimize the ability of the children in learning mathematics.

This study analyzes the consumption of elementary-school educational service by visually impaired individuals based on the theory of consumer vulnerability and resilience of Baker and Mason (2012). To this end, an ethnographic investigation was performed on a non-governmental organization (NGO) involved in the education of visually impaired students and conducted in accordance with the procedure of Transformative Consumer Research described by Crockett, Downey, Firat et al. (2013). Data were collected through narrative interviews with 16 elementary-school students, six in-depth interviews with managers and teachers from the NGO Lar, and five in-depth interviews with the guardians of the students, in addition to seven months of participant observations. The data were analyzed using the data analysis spiral technique. The results indicate that pressures from the individual, family, school community, and macro forces caused the state of vulnerability. Impotence in the face of practices by school managers and teachers as well as dependence on friendly schools appeared in the form of shock caused by two triggers events: the attempt to enroll students and the first days of school. The resilience of the consumers, the school community, and the NGO contributed to reduce the vulnerability.

This article describes the process followed to test software, the result of the first stage of an investigation, which aims to be a support tool for people with visual disabilities to improve their experience in learning mathematics. An analysis is made of the current situation in the country and the world of people with disabilities who wish to continue their studies at a high school or higher level, but who have found as main obstacles not having enough bibliography in Braille, or teachers not They have the means to generate content that visually impaired students can use in the same way as their classmates. Now with the Covid-19 pandemic there was a rebound in the use of educational platforms and distance education, leaving aside people with visual disabilities. We present the results of surveys applied to people with visual disabilities who participated using the software to evaluate their experience as users and their opinions to improve interaction with it. The objective of this study is to make people with visual disabilities feel included in regular educational environments, reducing the barriers that they may encounter in the teaching-learning process in the classroom, and converting them into inclusive classrooms.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the forms of representation constructed by primary school students in solving mathematical problems. Representation is the basis or foundation of how a student could understand and use mathematical ideas. The forms of representation, such as charts, graphs, and symbols, are essentially a long process of learning mathematics, but unfortunately these representations are often thought of and studied in its final form. Actually, representations should be given as support in the process of understanding concepts, the associations of mathematics, mathematical communication, constructing arguments, and apply mathematical concepts in everyday life through modeling. This research showed that the forms of representation constructed by the students are extremely varied. They are constructed in tables, images, patterns, and in the formal forms of mathematics (the formula). This study was also revealed that some students are able to develop forms of representation using logical mathematical processes. Students begin to formulate a representation using known premise, set the table, make conjecture, and subsequently arrange a formal representation.Keywords: mathematic representation, tables, charts, graphs, statements.

Stress is considered to be a major problem in the mobility training process. The effects of stress, potential stress reduction techniques, factors which impact independent mobility, and suggested areas of future research are discussed in this literature review. Practitioners should consider implementing some of these strategies to alleviate the anxiety of their visually impaired students and clients during mobility training. Hopefully, a greater number of professionals will become more involved in conducting formalized research projects in this area.

This chapter discusses 3D printing technologies in Brazilian schools through analysis of selected cases including one case implemented in the community with implications to schools. A description of the methodology and review of the cases are presented. Analysis is supported by international literature to enrich the review and compare how the field is evolving in the country. Results indicate that students and teachers are predominantly experiencing 3D printing via extra-curricular activities supported by research projects implemented outside the schools. On the other hand, the Lite Maker project made it possible to bring a 3D printer to schools. The community-based project illustrates how 3D printed objects can support visually impaired students. 3D printing technology is moving slowly into the mainstream of Brazilian educational landscape. However, schools will increase access to this technology as printers and its accessories become more affordable. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
