<p>On the 22nd of February, 2011 the city of Christchurch, New Zealand was crippled by a colossal earthquake. 185 people were killed, thousands injured and what remained was a city left in destruction and ruin. Thousands of Christchurch properties and buildings were left damaged beyond repair and the rich historical architecture of the Canterbury region had suffered irreparably.  This research will conduct an investigation into whether the use of mixed reality can aid in liberating Christchurch’s rich architectural heritage when applied to the context of destructed buildings within Christchurch.  The aim of this thesis is to formulate a narrative around the embodiment of mixed reality when subjected to the fragmentary historical architecture of Christchurch. Mixed reality will aspire to act as the defining ligature that holds the past, present and future of Christchurch’s architectural heritage intact as if it is all part of the same continuum.  This thesis will focus on the design of a memorial museum within a heavily damaged historical trust registered building due to the Christchurch earthquake. It is important and relevant to conceive the idea of such a design as history is what makes everything we know. The memories of the past, the being of the now and the projection of the future is the basis and fundamental imperative in honouring the city and people of Christchurch. Using the technologies of Mixed Reality and the realm of its counter parts the memorial museum will be a definitive proposition of desire in providing a psychological and physical understanding towards a better Christchurch, for the people of Christchurch.  This thesis serves to explore the renovation possibilities of the Canterbury provincial council building in its destructed state to produce a memorial museum for the Christchurch earthquake. The design seeks to mummify the building in its raw state that sets and develops the narrative through the spaces. The design intervention is kept at a required minimum and in doing so manifests a concentrated eloquence to the derelict space. The interior architecture unlocks the expression of history and time encompassed within a destructive and industrialised architectural dialogue. History is the inhabitant of the building, and using the physical and virtual worlds it can be set free.  This thesis informs a design for a museum in central Christchurch that celebrates and informs the public on past, present and future heritage aspects of Christchurch city. Using mixed reality technologies the spatial layout inside will be a direct effect of the mixed reality used and the exploration of the physical and digital heritage aspects of Christchurch. The use of technology in today’s world is so prevalent that incorporating it into a memorial museum for Christchurch would not only be interesting and exploratory but also offer a sense of pushing forward and striving beyond for a newer, fresher Christchurch. The memorial museum will showcase a range of different exhibitions that formulate around the devastating Christchurch earthquake. Using mixed reality technologies these exhibitions will dictate the spaces inside dependant on their various applications of mixed reality as a technology for architecture. Research will include; what the people of Canterbury are most dear to in regards to Christchurch’s historical environment; the use of mixed reality to visualise digital heritage, and the combination of the physical and digital to serve as an architectural mediation between what was, what is and what there could be.</p>

The architectural heritage is a particular case from the immaterial and material assets, movable or immovable, constituents of the cultural heritage. It is presented as a complex system with a continuous historical process, which can not be dissociated from its surroundings (Brusaporci 2015). In order to study, preserve and disseminate the past and present reality of this type of heritage, it was developed a digital recostruction methodology, able to adapt to each specific case, both in the object nature and in the representation objectives. This is only possible due to the last decade technological advances, that, alongside with the hardware and software development, led to the digital heritage definition. In order to disclose and discuss the proposed methodology, is presented digital reconstructions of monuments that have marked and still mark the image of the city of Lisbon. European city, capital of Portugal, country of aqueducts, rich in religious and military architecture. To cover their specific needs, taking into account their different natures, is presented the following case studies: 1) particular case of an extensive monument - the Águas Livres Aqueduct - and the case of territory circumscribed monuments in different preservation states (demolished, remains or existent). This last includes three representative convents of Lisbon’s religious houses: the Nossa Senhora da Piedade da Esperança Convent, the Santíssima Trindade Convent and the Santo Antão-o-Velho College. The developed digital reconstructions were based on the London’s Charter and Principles of Seville, in order to ensure the intellectual and technical rigor, as well as the methodological computer-methods visualization work sturdiness. Thus, the developed methodology is scientific, cyclical and flexible based on the creation of digital models with associative and parametric geometry - BIM models (Building Information Model) - intended to include the architectural heritage study, conservation and dissemination.

This is an interim, summary and provisional judgment on the Brazilian experiment of the past nine years, that is, since the military took power on April 1, 1964. To try to give an impression of the results of the interaction among the values of political democracy, equality, and economic growth, and the present levels compared with those of 1964 as well as what appear to be the trends. I have chosen six “indicators”:(1)the autonomy and integrity of the legal system;(2)torture and police brutality;(3)freedom of the mass media;(4)income distribution patterns;(5)education distribution patterns; and(6)the quality of life of the people of the city of greater São Paulo.

Having a look at the tourist space as a cultural specialist, the author drew attention to the fact that the closest to the modern man is a city environment he contacts and sometimes encounters in everyday life and on holidays. And every time whether he wants it or not, it opens in a dif erent way. One way of getting to know the world has long been a walking tour. It’s not just a walk hand in hand with a pleasant man or hasty movement to the right place, but namely the tour, in which a knowledgeable person with a soulful voice will speak about the past and present of the city and its surroundings, as if it is about your life and the people close to you. Turning to the beginning of the twentieth century, the experience of scientists-excursion specialists we today can learn a lot to improve the process of building up a tour, and most importantly the transmission of knowledge about the world in which we live. Well-known names of the excursion theory founders to professionals are I. Grevs, N. Antsiferov, N. Geynike and others. They are given in the context of ref ection on the historical development of walking tours, which haven’t lost their value and attract both creators and consumers of tour services.

This article proposes a theoretical point of view in order to show the importance of the collective memory and the urban narrative in the strategic approach of the urban project. The capacity of a municipality to build a local narrative joining the past, the memory and the project, is examined in the second part of the article, in a case study of a collectivity confronted with the project of the Grand Paris and strong socio-spatial transformation since 1950. The conclusions of thirty deep interviews, conducted on the people involved in the city organization allow to differentiate legitimated and rejected places in the spaces of remembering, and the difficulties of this kind of municipalities to be pro active in the Grand Paris project.

During the past two decades all the major cities of Cyrenaica have seen new fieldwork, and much has been achieved. The Department of Antiquities has been active, particularly in the increasingly important area of rescue archaeology. Its resolute and skilful efforts have included very important work at Shahat (Cyrene) (Walker (in Walda and Walker), this volume) and at Benghazi (Berenice). At the latter city, one of the least known in Cyrenaica, the Department's excavations at Sidi Khrebish demonstrated the rich archaeological potential of the site and led to the large-scale campaigns of 1971-5, in which the Society for Libyan Studies was deeply involved.Generous support has also been extended to British teams at Euesperides (Berenice's predecessor), Driana (Hadrianopolis), Tocra (Tauchira) and Tolmeita (Ptolemais); to the Italian Mission, whose work at Cyrene has proceeded throughout the period; to the major American investigation of the extra-mural Demeter sanctuary at the same site; and to the French Mission, which has conducted annual campaigns at Susa (Apollonia) since 1976. There has also been productive research into the minor towns.Perhaps the outstanding feature of the period under review, however, has been publication. No less than thirteen major site reports (see bibliography under Apollonia, Berenice, Cirene, Cyrene and Tocra), several works of synthesis (Goodchild 1971; Huskinson 1975; Rosenbaum and Ward-Perkins 1980; Stucchi 1975), collected papers (Goodchild 1976) and a profusion of shorter studies in journals, conference proceedings (Barker, Lloyd and Reynolds 1985; Gadallah 1971; Stucchi and Luni 1987) and exhibition publications (Missione Italiana 1987) have appeared — a very rich harvest. Many of course, had their genesis in earlier research, particularly during the fecund years of Richard Goodchild's controllership. Amongst much else, this saw Boardman and Hayes' exemplary Tocra project, which in its use of quantification, scientific analysis and other techniques anticipated later British and American work; the University of Michigan's extensive research at Apollonia; and the inauguration of the Italian Mission, under S. Stucchi, to Cyrene (Stucchi 1967), whose work on the architectural development, art and anastylosis of the city continues to make an outstanding contribution to our appreciation of Libya's archaeology and cultural heritage.

Aim of the article is to reflect on how digital technologies and ICT are changing the way to analyze, visualize, and communicate architectural heritage. In particular, mixed reality apps favor the constant and ubiquitous combination of reality and virtuality. A new kind of advanced heritage grows, characterized by the mix of tangible heritage and digital heritage: Reality enriches with information and virtuality acquires new potentialities with its matching with reality. This process moves from the development of digital informative models made by 3-D and database complex models, characterized by real time manipulability, navigation and interaction. This context renews people's relationship with images, allowing a sort of “visual turn” in built heritage field, where reality reaffirms its centrality, and the digital sphere opens to new opportunities in architectural heritage's studying, computing, experiencing, and valorization. Follows a claim for transparency of information and computer-based visualization.


Streets in heritage cities are vital elements of public realm system and become a showcase for many celebrations. They not only function as pathways for movement of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists supporting many societal and occupational activities, but they serve as the places of congregation as well. In India the streets are inherently a place where people meet, congregate, celebrate and also carry business. Each community has its own distinct occasions during which streets becomes the logical setting for people to gather and celebrate. In case of historic streetscapes, they are the carters of histories, with immeasurable evidence about the past events. The city of Mysore has many traditional streetscapes in the historic core exhibiting not only enormous architectural heritage but also has cultural significance. Ashoka Street Precinct, which was historically associated with cultural celebrations like Mysore Dasara during which the spectacular procession took place is situated in the heart of the city. With the shift of these celebrations to an alternative path, the street seems to be losing its’ heritage character and glory, though it is associated with many heritages building and precincts, and due recognition. Hence, it needs to be assessed with respect to the character and the physical quality in order to address the street precincts through the course of dereliction and transformation under the scenario of global change which is the inevitable occurrence everywhere. The paper explores the connection and disconnection between the old and the new and examines the process of physical transformation of Ashoka road precinct from being as a cultural street to a commercial street. The study is based on field work, observations, photo documentation and visual assessment. The streetscape analysis, issues and strategies including the measures proposed would aid the authority in formulation and implementation of streetscape guidelines resulting in improving of heritage character of the street precinct.

Folklore is a story of the past that characterizes every nation with its diverse cultures, including the rich culture and history of each nation. The folklore that tells incest is found all over the world. In almost all ethnic groups there is an incest first mythology. Versions are submitted vary, depending on the social life of the community. Bujang Munang and Oedipus are cultural myth stories that have the theme of the origin of the incest ban. Oedipus is a myth that developed in Greece while Bujang Munang is a myth that developed in Nanga Serawai Santang district of West Kalimantan. There is a linkage of the basic structure of the narrative in the story of Oedipus and Bujang Munang. Incest behavior is also not allowed to occur in the norms of life of Greek society and the people of West Kalimantan. There will be unfavorable consequences for incest and surrounding people if the rule is violated.

This study describes the kinship system adhered to by the people of East Asia, especially the People's Republic of China. The rich and diverse kinship system is clearly illustrated and applied in a large family during the dynastic kingdom in China. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the kinship system in Hong Lou Meng novel by Cao Xueqin. In addition, this novel also tells about a family that contains many different kinship systems. This research belongs to a descriptive-qualitative perspective. The results of the analysis show an overview of the kinship system contained in a large family in Ancient China about the Chinese ethnic kinship system in the past through Hong Lou Meng novel by Cao Xueqin.
