Production-oriented approach may provide us with a brand new perspective to our current college English reading instruction. Under this approach, teaching reforms need to be initiated in respects of teaching objectives, teaching materials, teaching methods and assessment. Instructors are required to design appropriate output tasks to stimulate learners’ motivation in reading. In addition, a wide variety of teaching activities need to be designed to fully involve students in classroom activities and ensure the completion of output tasks. The teaching materials should not only be aimed at improving students’ language knowledge, but also is conducive to students’ cross-cultural competence. Finally, immediate assessing and delayed assessing should be employed to guarantee the best possible learning results.

Based on the data from CNKI database, this study used CiteSpace to analyze the research hotspots and development trends of studies on English for Specific Purposes in China from 2000 to 2017. The results show that research hotspots mainly include college English ESP teaching reform, ESP teaching methods and models, needs analysis and ESP, ESP curriculum provision and curriculum design. The domestic studies on ESP experienced slow development in controversy, rapid development in practice and deep development with modern educational technology. Domestic ESP research has yielded fruitful results, but in the future, research on ESP evaluation system, ESP teachers, ESP corpora development, and ESP textbook construction should be deeply explored.

This article aims to generate a better understanding of Hong Kong teachers’ perception of national education as implemented in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (hereafter referred to as Hong Kong SAR) and the interrelationship between their perception and the methods they adopt to teach the topic. We outline the Hong Kong context relevant to our research and review the relevant literature to consider typologies and teaching methods about and for national education. Questionnaire data focused on the seven typologies of nationalism and the three teaching methods of national education identified in the literature review. A total of 601 questionnaires were returned from 198 schools. The typologies of cultural nationalism, civic and peripheral nationalism, authoritarian nationalism, unification nationalism and cosmopolitan nationalism, and the teaching methods of group discussion and an affective approach characterize the views of Hong Kong secondary school teachers about national education. We suggest that teachers’ diverse views about nationalism and their varied use of teaching methods to achieve their goals suggest the powerful influence of current initiatives from the Chinese mainland and the need to reflect on established academic literature that proposes the decolonization of the curriculum and interactive and critical teaching methods.
