Forty samples of dry above-ground biomass of two species and four varieties of Amaranthus cruentus (varieties Olpir, Amar 2 RR-R 150, and A 200 D) and A. hypochondriacus (variety No. 1008) were analyzed to determine their nutritional value during the experimental period covering five growth stages since inflorescence emergence till full ripening of grain from day 80 to day 120 of cultivation. The content of crude protein in the investigated amaranth varieties significantly decreased (from 158.2 ± 1.20 - 185.4 ± 2.33 to 103.8 ± 1.20 - 113.1 ± 0.01 g/kg) as well as did the crude ash content (from 169.9 ± 0.14 - 192.2 ± 0.42 to 129.7 ± 0.14 - 138.4 ± 0.21 g/kg). In contrast, the ether extract content significantly increased (from 12.2 ± 0.14 - 15.9 ± 0.28 to 28.0 ± 0.28 - 36.4 ± 0.14 g/kg) as well as crude fibre (from 144.9 ± 2.12 - 170.0 ± 3.68 to 183.6 ± 7.00 - 276.0 ± 1.20 g/kg), and gross-energy (from 16.6 ± 0.03 - 17.2 ± 0.07 to 18.1 ± 0.14 - 18.4 ± 0.01 MJ/kg) between days 80 and 120 of cultivation. The relatively high content of crude protein in the aboveground biomass in the period between days 80 and 90 of cultivation suggests that the plants could be used as a nutrient substitute for conventional forages.

Twenty samples of the aboveground biomass of <i>Amaranthus cruentus</i> (varieties Olpir, Amar 2 RR-R 150, and A 200 D) and <i>A. hypochondriacus</i> (variety No. 1008) were analysed to determine their nutritional value during the experimental period covering five growth stages from inflorescence emergence till full ripening of grain. During plant growth, from day 80 to day 120 of cultivation, the nutritional value decreased. This was demonstrated by an increase in insoluble fibre and a reduction in crude protein content. The content of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in the dry matter increased from 356 to 420 g/kg (<i>P</i> < 0.01); acid detergent fibre (ADF) from 238 to 286 g/kg (<i>P</i> < 0.01); acid detergent lignin (ADL) from 22.9 to 53.4 g/kg (<i>P</i> < 0.01). The content of crude protein in the dry matter of the investigated amaranth varieties decreased from 174 to 109 g/kg (<i>P</i> < 0.01). In the Czech Republic the aboveground biomass of the cultivated <i>A. cruentus</i> and <i>A. hypochondriacus</i> could be used as a good source of fibre and protein in animal diets when harvested in the period from day 80 to 90 of cultivation.

1. Twenty feeding and digestibility trials were carried out on seven tropical grasses to determine their nutritional value at different stages of growth, and to study their suitability as possible pasture grasses.2. Content of crude protein was relatively high at immature growth stages of the forages, and declined rapidly with the onset of flowering.3. Digestibility of dry matter and gross energy increased in most of the forages tested to the 5-week stage of regrowth but declined rapidly in mature stages of forages tested at 6 or 8 weeks of regrowth. Digestibility of crude protein declined with increasing maturity of the forages.4. The Nutritive Value Index of each forage was highest at four or five weeks of regrowth. The optimum time to graze the forages tested would occur between 4 and 5 weeks of regrowth, at the stage when flowering commences. This would combine high yield of forage with high nutritional value.

A laboratory studies were carried out to investigate the effect of fermentation duration on nutrients and antinutrient composition of shea butter seed meal, SBSM. 500g of the wet unprocessed SBM was cooked for 1 hour after which it was cooled and divided into 5 portions. The first portion was tagged T1 and oven-dried. The remaining 4 were bagged in different air-tight polythene bags and allowed to ferment for 3, 4, 5 and 6 days and each treatment was labeled as T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively. At the end of the processing, each treatment was replicated and the samples analyzed. Crude protein and ether extract were significantly (P<0.05) improved as the days of fermentation increased. The values increased from 10.33 and 2.76% to 15.58 and 4.50%, respectively at day 3 fermentation. However, the values reduced as fermentation entered day 5 and 6. Fermentation of SBSM for up to day 4 (T5) and 5 (T6) gave the best (P<0.05) result for crude fibre (14.37 and 14.78%), whereas fermentation for as early as 3 days gave same result for ash as compared to those of day 4 (4.48%), 5 (3.29%) and 6 (3.11%), respectively. Similarly, fermenting SBSM for up to 4 days gave significantly (P<0.05) the highest value for gross energy (3.13 kcal/kg) whereas that of day 5 produced the highest value of NFE (63.51%) but similar to that of day 2 (61.98%). There was no significant (P>0.05) variation in the value recorded for DM across the treatments. Consistently, the best (P>0.05) result obtained for all the minerals evaluated were on the fourth day of fermentation except for days 3 (0.06%) and 6 (0.04%) which were comparable to both the control (0.09%) and day 4 (0.09%). Fermenting SBSM for up to day 4 gave the best (P>0.05) result for potassium (0.36%), calcium (0.18%) and phosphorus (0.36%). However, the treatment did not (P<0.05) affect the concentration of magnesium. Saponin and phytic acid were significantly (P<0.05) reduced due to fermentation for 3 to 4 days but were increased (P<0.05) beyond this duration of fermentation. However, there was no variation (P>0.05) in the results obtained for tannin (0.001 – 0.003%), oxalate (0.0010 – 0.0014%) and flavonoids (0.005 – 0.006%). The vitamins analyzed namely A, B6 and α- tocopherol were consistently improved (P<0.05) from the beginning of the time of fermentation up to day 4 but reduced (P<0.05) beyond this period of fermentation. Monogastric animal farmers can therefore, ferment SBSM for at most 4 days and conveniently feed their animals as a replacement for conventional energy source.

Spectral indices rarely show consistency in estimating crop traits across growth stages; thus, it is critical to simultaneously evaluate a group of spectral variables and select the most informative spectral indices for retrieving crop traits. The objective of this study was to explore the optimal spectral predictors for above-ground biomass (AGB) by applying Random Forest (RF) on three types of spectral predictors: the full spectrum, published spectral indices (Pub-SIs), and optimized spectral indices (Opt-SIs). Canopy hyperspectral reflectance of potato plants, treated with seven nitrogen (N) rates, was obtained during the tuber formation and tuber bulking from 2015 to 2016. Twelve Pub-SIs were selected, and their spectral bands were optimized using band optimization algorithms. Results showed that the Opt-SIs were the best input variables of RF models. Compared to the best empirical model based on Opt-SIs, the Opt-SIs based RF model improved the prediction of AGB, with R2 increased by 6%, 10%, and 16% at the tuber formation, tuber bulking, and for across the two growth stages, respectively. The Opt-SIs can significantly reduce the number of input variables. The optimized Blue nitrogen index (Opt-BNI) and Modified red-edge normalized difference vegetation index (Opt-mND705) combined with an RF model showed the best performance in estimating potato AGB at the tuber formation stage (R2 = 0.88). In the tuber bulking stage, only using optimized Nitrogen planar domain index (Opt-NPDI) as the input variable of the RF model produced satisfactory accuracy in training and testing datasets, with the R2, RMSE, and RE being 0.92, 208.6 kg/ha, and 10.3%, respectively. The Opt-BNI and Double-peak nitrogen index (Opt-NDDA) coupling with an RF model explained 86% of the variations in potato AGB, with the lowest RMSE (262.9 kg/ha) and RE (14.8%) across two growth stages. This study shows that combining the Opt-SIs and RF can greatly enhance the prediction accuracy for crop AGB while significantly reduces collinearity and redundancies of spectral data.

Twelve ram lambs of the West African Forest type of between 15.7 and 24.6 kg were divided into four groups of 3 animals each. A group was assigned to one of four diets consisting of the following concentrate: grass hay ratios - 20 : 80 (A), 40 : 60 (B), 60 : 40 (C) and 80 : 20 (D). Feed intake, nutrient digestibilities and efficiency of feed utilization were measured. As the level of concentrate increased, the contents of crude protein ether extract, nitrogen-free extract (NFE) and gross energy of the diets increased, while the crude fibre and ash contents decreased almost linearly. Voluntary feed intake increased with increasing levels of concentrate, with diet C having a significantly higher (P 0.01) Relative Intake (RI) value than the other diets. Both the Nutritive Value Index (NVI) and Digestible Energy (DE) intake values were significantly higher (P. 0.01) in diets C and D than the other diets. Generally, the digestion coefficients for the gross energy, crude protein, crude fibre and nitrogen free extract increased with increasing levels of concentrate, the values being significantly higher (P 0.01) in diets C and D, while diet A showed a significantly lower (P 0.05) dry matter digestion coefficient value when compared with either diets. Although a similar trend was observed in the digestion coefficient for ether extract, the differences were not significant (P 0.05). With the exception of animals on diet C which had the highest daily weight gains, average daily weight gains and efficiency of feed utilization increased with successive substitution of concentrate for grass hay.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the nutritional value of the breast and thigh muscle of chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) under intensive fattening conditions. Commercial feeding mixtures for broilers were used. Live weight of 60 partridges (birds were not sexed) was controlled during 90 days of fattening. After the fattening was finished, 30 birds were selected to monitor the carcass yield. Breast and thigh muscle were used for chemical analysis of crude protein (Kjeldahl method), total lipids (fat analyser ANKOMXT10), ash (Muffle furnace - 550° C) and gross energy (calorimetry). Average values ​​of live weight were increasing in the course of fattening; at the end of fattening the live weight reached 0.452 kg. The carcass yield, breast muscle yield and thigh yield were evaluated (73.72%, 18.09%, 20.80%, respectively). Chemical analysis showed a highly significant difference (P ≤ 0.01) between the breast and thigh muscle for crude protein, fat, ash and gross energy. The ash content demonstrated a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) between the breast and thigh muscle. This study brings new data on the nutritional value of the meat of chukar partridge that can be used for reccomendation of a suitable feeding mixture.

The objective of this work was to determine the nutritional value of different protein sources for "dourado" (Salminus brasiliensis). Thirty juveniles per group (33.51±1.4 g) were hand fed on a reference diet (70%) added of tested ingredients (30%) and chromium oxide III (0.1%). Apparent digestibility coefficients of the gross energy (ADC GE), crude protein (ADC CP) and amino acids of the tested ingredients were evaluated. Corn gluten meal yielded the best results for ADC GE and ADC CP (95.7 and 96.9%, respectively) amongst plant ingredients. Spray-dried blood meal yielded the best values of ADC GE and ADC CP amongst animal ingredients (94.1 and 96.3%, respectively). Wheat bran yielded poorest ADCs coefficients (77 for ADC GE and 88.2% for ADC CP).

Sesbania, a tropical legume browse, provides green foliage high in crude protein and low in crude fibre (Sen, Ray and Ranjhan, 1978). In Bangladesh two varieties of sesbania, Sesbania aculeata and a recently introduced African Sesbania rostrata are largely cultivated for green manuring in agricultural fields during kharif season. The leaves of sesbania may be used as good source of protein to supplement protein-poor roughages in ruminants diets. However, there is an extreme paucity of information on its nutritional value for goats. An attempt was therefore made to study the effect of feeding sesbania leaves as sole feed on growth performance and nutrient utilization in growing Black Bengal goats.Nine Black Bengal male castrated goats aged about 5 months and weighing 9.0 kg on average initially were used in a 56 day study.The goats were housed individually in a slatted floor and were introduced to the experimental feed over a period of 2 weeks.The animals were allocated at random to one of three dietary treatments in a randomised block design according to live weight.The control group A given road-side grass and the groups B and C offered green leaves of Sesbania aculeata and Sesbania rostrata, respectively.

1. Digestibility trials were conducted, and the rate of passage of hay was measured, with five Shorthorn cows during a period of normal diet and during two experimental periods in which diets low in hay and high in concentrates were given. In the first experimental period the concentrates were cubes of the wartime type sold as National Cattle Food No. 1, and containing a variety of constituents; in the second they were a mixture offlakedmaize (50%), weatings (35%) and decorticated ground-nut cake (15%). For convenience these are referred to as concentrate ‘cubes’ and ‘mixture’ respectively.2. During the initial and final control periods the cows consumed daily 17–21 lb. hay, and about 4·5 lb. concentrates per 10 lb. of milk produced. In the initial control period the concentrates were the concentrate cubes, and in the final they were the concentrate mixture. The hay was reduced to 4 lb. daily during the two experimental periods and the remainder of the standard requirements of the animals were met by concentrates. The concentrates were the cubes in the first experimental period and the mixture in the second experimental period.3. Seducing the hay to 4 lb. did not affect the fat content of the milk when the other food in the diet was the concentrate cubes, but there was a striking mean fall of 1·04% fat when the cubes were replaced by the concentrate mixture. This represented a loss of over 30% in the yield of fat.4. Digestibility trials, conducted in the initial control and first and second experimental periods, indicated that the fall in milk fat content was not the result of changes in the amounts of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, cellulose, cellulosans or pentosans not in cellulose digested. The essential difference between the diet of low hay with the concentrate mixture and the other diets given in this experiment was that it provided a high intake of starch yet had little of the physical property of roughage. It is concluded that depression of milk fat content results from a combination of these two factors and probably originates from changes in the physical and biochemical processes of the reticulo-rumen.5. The intake of starch equivalent, as calculated from the intake of digestible nutrients, was close to standard requirements in all periods of the experiments, but there was a surplus of digestible crude protein.6. The mean solids-not-fat content of the milk rose 0·48% at the time of the fall in milk fat, and this was entirely due to an increase in milk protein. After the return to normal diets the recovery of solids-not-fat was slower, but no less complete, than the recovery in milk fat.

The effects of dry- (roasting) and moist-heat (boiling) treatments on the biochemical characteristics of Terminalia catappa (tropical almond) seed were determined. There were no significant differences in crude protein, fat, ash, and carbohydrate content of the seeds with respect to processing. Boiling increased significantly ( P < 0.05) the crude fibre, however roasting reduced it. Roasting had a better effect on the total dietary fibre (TDF) and gross energy level of the seeds than boiling. There were no significant differences in the effects of both processes on the amino acid, fatty acid and sugar profiles of the seeds. Roasting improved the potassium, phosphorus, copper and iodine, reducing the magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron contents. Boiling improved the sodium and selenium and reduced the potassium, magnesium and calcium levels.
