THE ROLE OF TEXT AND METHODS OF WORK WITH IT IN TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT THE PRESENT TIME

The present article is dedicated to the necessity and importance of continuing teaching students to work with great amount of information in the form of texts, as well as to acquire methods and strategies of this work. Gradual but unfaltering rejection of the use of texts in teaching a foreign lan- guage can lead to lowering the level of its mastering. To understand the deep reasons for the existing situation in this sphere, it is necessary to look at the experts’ opinions of the new generation of young people. In spite of the quick changes in the world, education preserves its strict standards that establish the landmarks upon which the pedagogical and educa- tional processes are built. In the course of several last years the teachers of the department of foreign languages have participated in the preparation of English-language materials for the Olympiads, organized by the RSUH. The author analyzes strategies and tactics of work with big texts, selection of topics, used in these Olympiads, as well as the tasks, developed for operating such texts. These types of work with big amount of information lead us to the neces- sity of forming and developing in students such aspect of the communicative competence, as its text-forming component. Here we can speak about all the skills, technologies, tactics and strategies, that are used to facilitate the stu- dent’ work in the analysis of existing texts, creation of new texts, stimulation of class and home self-study in the spheres of creative scientific and artisticwork, for example, writing an artistic essay or a scientific article. And the basis for such work will be constituted by the text.

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.

The article is devoted to the psychological and pedagogical substantiation of the expediency of learning foreign languages while studying in the institution of higher education. The authors analyse the current educational process in Ukrainian and identify the most important factors influencing the formation of qualified professionals and establish the role of foreign language in each of these factors. It was found that studying can be extremely intensified due to learning a foreign language. It is established that learning foreign languages increases a person’s ability to develop intellectually. At present, the English language is being taught by adapting world standards of Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) for teaching foreign languages to our national educational system. According to the Uzbek national standard the knowledge of the foreign language competence from the first to fourth grade is defined as A 1- for the beginner level. This article will disclose the formation and development of primary school learners’ foreign language skills through communicative competence.

The article deals with a new trend in foreign language teaching based on the cross-cultural approach. The aim of this research is to highlight some problems in teaching and learning English as a foreign language. As there exist different ways in mastering foreign languages there also exist many methods of their teaching. In the course of training many students face with spelling, inflection, pronunciation, grammar and other common problems which are constantly investigated and solved. According to the level of any individual group of students the approach of organization and conduction of the lesson should also be individual as learners make different mistakes. So teachers of any foreign language must not just get formal education but also be aware of modern techniques and approaches.

The scientific article explores the problem of using the electronic language Portfolio in bilingual education as the latest method of presenting a pupils' foreign language activities. Its importance at the present stage of education development is substantiated. The role of the electronic platform in the educational bilingual process is analyzed, as with the development of the latest digital technologies there have also been changes in its organization. It is established that the electronic Portfolio is used in bilingual education as the latest method of storage and presentation of the works carried out by the pupils. It presents feedback, recommendations of teachers regarding foreign language activities of the student. It is a kind of platform for discussions, as the Portfolio can serve in the educational environment to connect the pupil and the teacher, to present the achievements and successes of the pupil in foreign language activities. It is established that in the context of bilingual education, the European language Portfolio offers clear, systematic descriptors of pupils' knowledge and skills in mastering foreign languages, and is also used to assess student achievement. This motivates them to work better, allows them to identify gaps in their learning. In the context of bilingual education, the Portfolio can be used to compare and evaluate the level of foreign language skills of the pupils, which allows the teacher to adjust their intervention in the bilingual educational process. It is stated that in today's conditions the electronic language Portfolio is especially effectively used in bilingual education, as it provides interaction between peers, serves as a means of communication between the pupil and the teacher, the teacher and the parents. The use of electronic language Portfolio in bilingual education promotes the integration of positive experience of foreign language activities, encourages pupils to implement its practical aspects, establishes the foundation for professional development.

SummaryThe paper presents a new tool for approaching foreign languages. The “A1 for everyone” (A1FE1) project aims to promote multilingualism (meaning the ability of an individual to use different languages) in tune with the focuses of EU language policy, i.e. “to make a wider range of languages available to learners to allow individual choice”. A1FE1 aims to create a series of compact manuals, language introduction guides, different from self-study courses or tourist phrasebooks, which should allow everyone to reach level A1 (“Breakthrough”) in a foreign language (L2), using the technologies available today and a new reader-tailored approach. In fact it is not a guide for a single language being translated into several others, but each L2 guide is written specifically for a type of L1 users, since combinations of typologically distant languages (Danish for Spanish, Czech for Finnish) must tackle the same A1 material in a different way compared to especially genetically similar languages (Danish for Swedish, Czech for Slovaks). The paper introduces the Italian language guide for Lithuanians (Italų kalba šnekantiems lietuviškai). There are two main principles in this project: the comparative and contrastive approach, which proceeds from what is familiar (L1) to illustrate what is new (L2) and the central role of the lexicon as vehicle of communication and unifying element of the three components of grammar (phonetics, morphology and syntax). This is the reason why the bulk of each guide consists of four sections presenting the sounds, the basic forms, logical connections and words of the L2, followed by a two-way minimal dictionary full with communicative examples. The level descriptors of the Common European Framework are not language-specific, hence A1 structures and lexicon should be selected according to teaching practice resources available in the countries where the L2 is spoken, such as syllabuses, word frequency lists, etc. Audio recordings of all L2 material presented in the guides and additional videos following the books’ structure can be accessed online. Italų kalba šnekantiems lietuviškai will serve in fact as a prototype, outlining practical and problematic aspects to take into consideration when drafting other guides. After its release, feedback from users and field experts will help evaluate the real development possibilities of the project, including the involvement of institutions at European level.

Competence-based technologies used for teaching a foreign language in non-linguistic higher education institutions, put at the center of all education system student competence, providing comfortable, conflict-free conditions of its development, realization of natural and acquired potentials. The construction of a competence-based educational process presupposes the orientation of the training space on the competence sphere of students. The studied experience makes it possible to identify competencebased “platforms”, as well as the main “landmarks” for teaching a foreign language to future experts of non-linguistic specialties. Not only the general English language course, which is quite universal for all specialties, but also the professionally-oriented course, which depends on the chosen specialty in the higher education institution, acquires great importance in the training of future non-language experts. The competence orientation of teaching foreign languages to students of non-linguistic specialties is to ensure proficiency in a foreign language within the framework of both everyday communication and in the specialty at a creative and professional level. Theoretical design of the formation of professional communicative competence of future non-language professionals in the process of learning a foreign language confirms the feasibility of the proposed method, allows us to theoretically justify its effectiveness.

This article provides information on the effectiveness of improving communicative competence in the teaching process and discusses some ways to develop it. Cultural awareness promotes important ties between culture and language learning encourage teachers of foreign languages. In order to be bilingual and competitive, a non-native learner has to be bicultural. The article investigates some main aspects and principles of communication explicitly and implicitly underline the importance of cultural studies at English as a foreign language classes in the Karakalpak auditoriums. The article depicts the system of values characteristic to a nation can be introduced to learners through proverbs. The methods of descriptive, comparative and logical-semantic analyses are used in the research. The article analyzes the examples that are based on phraseological units, mainly proverbs in Karakalpak in comparison with English proverbs. Communicative competence is considered to be important in order to understand communication ethics, and to improve cultural awareness skills, to develop critical thinking as well. Also, the authors conclude that cultural codes could be a subject of practical study during English as a foreign language, along with other exercises on grammar and speaking skills that could be used by a Karakalpak ESP (English as a specific purpose) teacher. The article is devoted to the conceptualization of the possibilities of a nationally-oriented approach in the development of communicative competence, particularly of sociocultural competence, in the process of teaching foreign languages. The article dwells upon the interdependence of students' national characteristics, the degree of tolerance to ambiguity and the results of language testing. The theoretical basis are works on the methodology of teaching foreign languages related to the development of communicative competence, as well as to the concept of “tolerance to ambiguity”. The authors of the article determine the ways, means, methods of forming the proper level of tolerance to ambiguity, and therefore, a tolerant attitude to the values of the carriers of another culture. Experimental data were obtained in the course of work with groups of Chinese and Turkmen students studying Russian as a foreign language at Pskov State University, as well as with the groups of Russian-speaking school graduates who took mock  International English Language Testing System [IELTS] in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Pskov. A nationally-oriented approach in teaching foreign languages should be prioritized not only at the stage of preparation for language testing, but also in the development of test materials.
