Formation of Foreign Language Hedging Competencies in the Context of Academic Writing

The article is devoted to the problem of teaching academic writing as a concept of academic literacy of students, undergraduates, graduate students in higher education. Violation of the norms of academic writing is a common practice among both foreign language and domestic authors. This results from the fact of poor acquired and often lack of possession of formal stylistic competencies that affect the quality of writing a clear, concise and convincing scientific text. As the title implies, the aim of the article is to present the technology that avoids traditional errors when working on a scientific text. The need to follow the specific tone of the genres of academic writing, dictating the choice of words and phrasing, is especially noted. The technology of teaching hedging is proposed as a system of sequential operations (algorithm) for solving the stated problem. The algorithm for the formation of hedging competencies acquaints students of all levels in higher education with the genres and style of formal writing, teaches them to construct their own knowledge in academic discourse. In addition, the goal was to develop hedging competencies and to use foreign language lexical phenomena in academic writing genres, which may help to warn authors against typical stylistic errors. This work may be of interest both for students of all levels in higher education and for researchers-beginners, since the article discusses the international requirements for the writing of academic scientific documents that may be useful while preparing a foreign publication. The recommendations made as a result of the research may also arouse the interest of teachers of foreign languages, draw attention to the problem of academic writing and integrate them into the course of the profile discipline. This, in its turn, may help to meet the requirements to the quality of specialists training at universities, including scientific work support of students of all levels.

The article deals with the issue of improving the quality of learning a foreign language, namely the ways to eliminate the problems that occur during teaching the subject in distance learning mode. By means of the Ishikawa diagram the basic groups of factors that affect the quality of learning a foreign language specifically in distance learning mode are figured out. After that the factors that cannot be affected directly by a teacher are excluded from consideration. The remaining factors are carefully considered in order to find which one of them is the best in terms of neutralizing the stated problem. A number of modern methods of teaching foreign languages is analyzed; as the result, a range of indicative tasks for qualitative control of learning a foreign language is proposed, with basic features of distance learning taken into account. In conclusion it is pointed out that the proposed tasks can be used by the university tutors to enhance the quality of control of learning a foreign language in distance learning mode.

The article deals with various aspects of plagiarism: definition (discriminating it from cheating and copyright violation), types (intended / unintended), involved people, causes, prevention, detection and punishment of plagiarism. A survey (questionnaire containing 42 items to be assessed in a 5-point Likert scale and one open- ended item) was conducted in Georgia. The questionnaire developed based on the literature review was uploaded on social media in three variants (to analyze the results separately and compare them): for students, for researchers and for assessors. The obtained results revealed that the opinions of the three groups of respondents differed to a certain degree, but were quite similar, eventually. The survey disclosed the existing problems, such as: lack of academic writing (in the native and especially foreign language) and research skills, lack of training in avoiding plagiarism, insufficiently clear university policies in the area, the emphasis on punishment instead of prevention, etc. Based on the obtained results recommendations for universities are given concerning plagiarism policies.

<p class="0abstract">The higher education system around the world is being rapidly developed towards digitalization – from computers to laptops, from laptops to tablets and smartphones. Accordingly, traditional delivery of instruction is being shifted towards blended learning that is being gradually replaced with distance learning, i.e. higher education is moving forward with mobile learning (m-learning) technologies. The introduction of mobile learning became the most topical event in 2020 in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to which many countries had to completely move to distance learning in higher education. The purpose of the study is to analyze the prospects for the widespread use of mobile applications in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Russia to Russian and Arab learners. In the course of the study, an online survey based on a questionnaire consisting of four open and closed questions was conducted. An empirical method was applied to collect the research data.  The survey was conducted at the Department of Foreign Languages of the Engineering Academy of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (EA PFUR). The total research sample included 200 participants and consisted of: 50 potential employers, 50 Russian and Arab students of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia studying Linguistics (training program code 035700), 50 faculty members, namely teachers of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow State Pedagogical University and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, as well as 50 administrative staff of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. The purpose of the survey was to collect information about the use of mobile applications (Smartphone Apps) and the introduction of mobile learning technology (m-learning) in the process of teaching EFL to students. According to the results of the survey, instructors are actively using mobile technologies in their professional activities and all participants in the learning process are receptive to their introduction in education. At the same time, respondents believe that technical challenges are the major obstacle to the adoption of mobile applications; these problems must be overcome in order to enable more productive use of mobile applications. In this regard, the study of mobile applications that are suitable for specific aspects of learning a foreign language, such as spoken language, reading comprehension, listening or writing, can be considered a promising research area.</p>

A questionnaire survey and a series of face-to-face interviews were conducted with a sample of 488 foreign language teachers from 201 universities. The research results describe a comprehensive picture of the training and scientific research related to the teaching of foreign languages ​​in higher education institutions in Vietnam.

The article is devoted to the psychological and pedagogical substantiation of the expediency of learning foreign languages while studying in the institution of higher education. The authors analyse the current educational process in Ukrainian and identify the most important factors influencing the formation of qualified professionals and establish the role of foreign language in each of these factors. It was found that studying can be extremely intensified due to learning a foreign language. It is established that learning foreign languages increases a person’s ability to develop intellectually. The modern era of digital economy lays new claims to the system of education and professional learning. Digitation of higher education reveals new prospects for using digital resources to ensure accessibility, continuity and quality of education. The purpose of our investigation is to assess the effectiveness of the use of digital educational resources by students studying foreign languages. Principal methods of our research are as follows: bibliographic method of studying regulatory documents and scientific and methodological literature; the analysis of foreign language competences, mastering of which is the aim of foreign language teaching in a University; the study and generalization of working experience using digital technologies in foreign language teaching; experiment involving 24 students from MIREA – Russian Technological University. As a result of the study frequency of thematic terms and notions use in scientific-teaching literature and Internet search requests was defined; the analysis of modern digital educational technologies forming students’ foreign language competences was made; foreign language competences analyzed in the experiment were described; an experiment involving the comparison of application efficiency in using traditional and digital techniques for forming foreign language competences was carried out. The experiment showed the following: absence of statistically important differences in the level of formed foreign language competences in control and experimental groups at the beginning of the experiment as t = -0.99, p = 0.43. At the end of the experiment p < 0,05: t = -5.19, p = 0,000014. It testifies that the compared groups significantly differ that proves the effect of web-quest technique in teaching foreign languages. Digital educational resources contribute to mastering a foreign language as a means of professional communication and increase the motivation of students to study this subject. Prospects for further research can be related to the development of new forms and methods of applying innovative digital technologies with the aim to put them into foreign language teaching practice at the higher education level.

The article deals with the issue of improving the quality of learning a foreign language, namely the analysis of some problems that arise when this subject is taught in distance learning mode. The article substantiates the relevance of the problem, especially in terms of rapid development of information technology over the last ten years; it also considers the situation that our country and educational system face as the result of the consequences of COVID-19 spread. The article points out and analyses some of the problems concerning learning foreign languages in the distance learning mode, goes into their essence and also identifies the reasons for these problems to occur.

The scaffolds of American colleges and universities can no longer protect our institutions from the winds of change that penetrate their walls and appear to be threatening their foundations. They also seem incapable of protecting faculties from persistent criticism due to unsatisfactory performance and reluctance to modify educational approaches to meet society's current demands. This chapter reviews some of the most common concerns pertaining not only to the quality of higher education in general but also to that of foreign language teaching in particular. It analyzes the reasons that there is a general sense of dissatisfaction with the results of traditional practices to language learning and discusses the benefits of implementing the flipped model to enhance the quality of instruction. In addition, it underlines the importance of adopting innovative technologies to increase language development in a world in which instructors are expected to be more productive and students have to reach higher learning outcomes.
