The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of the ethanolic extract of three local plants ( Elettaria cardamomum, Aloe vera, Thyme Vulgaris) against the growth of pathogenic Candida albicans in culture media. The antifungal activity was carried out by using agar well diffusion method. Ethanolic extracts of Elettaria cardamomum and Aloe vera inhibited the growth of Candida albicans isolates at all concentrations which tested in the present study (25, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 400) mg/ml, while the extract of Thymus vulgaris showed no activity against tested Candida albicans

Background. Echinops kebericho is an endemic medicinal plant in Ethiopia widely used in the treatment of infectious and noninfectious diseases. Essential oils are known for their antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the antifungal activity of essential oil from E. kebericho against four common pathogenic fungi and two standard strains. Methods. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. The antifungal screening was done by agar well diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by broth microdilution. Minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) were determined by subculturing fungal strains with no visible growth onto a Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) plate. Results. Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans were highly sensitive while Aspergillus flavus did not show sensitivity up to 1 mg/ml of essential oil; MICs ranged from 0.083 mg/ml to 0.208 mg/ml. Concentration and fungal species showed significant dose-dependent associations ( p < 0.0001 ) with antifungal activity. The MICs of essential oil were comparable to those of the standard drug (fluconazole) against C. glabrata and C. krusei. The lowest MFC of the essential oil was observed against Candida parapsilosis (0.145 mg/ml) while the highest MFC was against Candida krusei (0.667 mg/ml). Conclusion. Echinops kebericho essential oil showed noteworthy antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata and could be a potential candidate for further antifungal drug development.

Candida albicans an opportunistic pathogenic fungus causes many infections in humans. Whereas Aspergillus niger is a fungus that can produce ochratoxins, a group of extremely dangerous secondary metabolites that are classified as potentially carcinogenic to humans and also causing deterioration in grapes, strawberries, etc. The purpose of the current study is to isolate, purify, identify and characterize new microorganisms associated with solid green household waste for the control of C. albicans and A. niger. The antifungal activity of bacterial isolates was carried out in vitro by the agar plug diffusion method, the disk and well diffusion method. The isolate that showed promising activity has been identified by those macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. The results obtained in the course of this study showed the isolation of an isolate named Gn-A11-18, which was shown to have significant inhibitory activity with a 42.66% inhibition percentage against A. niger and a 44.66 mm inhibition diameter against C. albicans compared to the controls. The identification of Gn-A11-18 isolate has shown that this isolate belongs to the genus Bacillus with a similarity to Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus tequilensis. In the light of the results of this study, we can suggest that the bioactive compound of Bacillus sp. Gn-A11-18 could become a biological alternate that could have an important role to fight against C. albicans and A. niger.

The objective of this study is to analyse the antimycotic activity of pepper on the clinical isolates of Candida. The extracts were prepared in the following concentrations in sterile water. 5mg/ml and 10mg/ml and 20mg/ml. 100µl of an extract of different concentrations were loaded on sterile filter paper discs measuring 6mm in diameter, so that the concentration of the extract on each disc was 500µg, 1000 µg and 2000µg respectively. The discs were dried and kept aseptically. Screening of antifungal activity [dis diffusion technique] The ethanolic extract of Piper nigrum was screened for antifungal activity by the disc diffusion method. Effect of three different concentrations (2000, 1000, 500,µg /disc) of the ethanolic extract Of Piper nigrum was tested against Candida albicans using disc diffusion technique. All the concentrations of the test solution inhibited the fungal species with varying degree of sensitivity. The inhibitory zone was measured with respect to the different concentration of the extracts which include 2000 µg/disc and 500 µg/disc at both room temperature and cold temperature (4-8°c). The inhibition zones were evaluated at 24 and 48 hrs. The result of this study revealed that the pepper oil has pronounced inhibitory activities against Candida albicans. This result is comparable with studies which have shown that Piper nigrum has a broad antibacterial activity. Since Piper nigrum is easily available and well-tolerated, it can be incorporated into medication for topical antifungal therapy as well.

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to investigate the chemical composition of essential oils (EOs) from: Origanum vulgare L., Satureja hortensis L., Thymus serpyllum L. and Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) cultivated in Poland, and to study their antifungal activity towards clinical isolates of oral Candida spp. The hydrodistilled essential oils were analyzed using the GC-MS method. The antifungal activity was evaluated in vitro against oral isolates and reference strains of Candida albicans and C. glabrata, using the broth microdilution method according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) and Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines, allowing for estimation of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC). GC-MS analysis revealed that carvacrol was the main EO compound in oregano and summer savory, while thymol and linalool were the major ingredients of thyme and wild thyme oils, respectively. The EOs possessed fungicidal activity against C. albicans and C. glabrata, including oral isolates, with MIC = 125 – 2000 mg/L, MFC = 250 – 4000 mg/L and MFC/MIC = 1 – 4, depending on the yeast and plant species. The most active was thyme oil – with MIC = 125 – 500 mg/L, MFC = 250 – 500 mg/L and MFC/MIC = 1 – 2.

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been known as traditional medicine. Apigenin is one of active component in Celeryleaf that has fungicidal activity, so celery leaf’s extortion suspected has fungicidal activity to Candida albicans. Apigenincan solved in water. The aim of this research was to know antifungal activity of celery leaf’s extortion againsts Candidaalbicans in vitro.This is a laboratory experimental research by using completely randomized design and disc diffusion method. Celeryleaf’s extortion was divided into 3 concentrations, there were 25%, 50% and 100%. Ketoconazole 2% was used aspositive control and aquadest as negative control. The result of this research was based on analysis of variance, therewas significant difference between minimal 2 treatment (p=0.000) and confirmed with Post Hoc test, there were significantdifference in all treatments. As the conclusion, celery leaf’s extortion had antifungal activity againsts Candida albicansin vitro with the best concentration 50% but smaller than ketoconazole 2%.

The present study was designed to evaluate the inhibitory effects of three local plant ethanolic extracts (Quercus robur , Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Thymus vulgaris) against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk of cow infected with clinical mastits in culture media by using of agar well diffusion method. For this purpose graduate concentrates for each extract (50 , 100 , 200 , 400 )mg/ml prepared and tested .The result showed that the extract of Quercus robur was more effective followed by Thymus vulgaris and Cinnamomum zeylanicum.The statistical analysis by using ANOVA with LSD at level (p<0.05) showed that there was no significant differences between the effect of the studied concentrations of Quercus robur , Cinnamomum zeylanicum while for Thymus vulgaris we find that the concentration 100 mg\ml had a significant difference with the other studied concentration in inhibition of the growth of the tested bacteria. We also find that between the antibiotics the largest zone of inhibition was given by LOM followed by SPV,PI,NV,RA and CX

ABSTRAK           Candida albicansmerupakan salah satu contoh mikroorganisme patogenik penyebab infeksi pada bagianlumenorgan tubuh manusia yang berbentuk saluran. Candida albicanspada saluran reproduksi dan saluran urinaria wanita sering dikenal dengan “penyakit keputihan”. Salah satu cara mengatasi munculnya keputihan adalah dengan membersihkan daerah kewanitaan menggunakan larutan antiseptik seperti povidone iodine. Masyarakat pada umumnya juga menggunakan sediaan daun sirih yang telah beredar di pasaran. Sediaan ini juga dikenal sebagai antiseptik sehingga dapat menghambat pertumbuhan C. Albicans,selain daun sirih (Piper bitleL.), ternyata daun gelinggang atau ketepeng cina (Cassia alataL.) juga memiliki aktivitas antibakteri dan antijamur.           Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan menggunakan isolat jamur C.albicans. Proses ekstraksi daun gelinggang dilakukan dengan teknik maserasi menggunakan pelarut metanol, alkohol 96%, dietil eter, dan infusa. Ekstrak dan SDS diuji aktivitas antijamurnya dengan menggunakan metode difusi agar menggunakan kertas cakram. Analisis uji ini dilakukan dengan mengukur zona hambatan ekstrak dan sediaan daun sirih terhadap pertumbuhan jamur.          Analisis nilai persentase aktivitas zona hambat ekstrak metanol daun C.alata menunjukkan tidak adanya perbedaan yang signifikan dengan SDS 1 (asymp. Sig.= 0,245) dan dengan SDS 2 (asymp. Sig. = 0,882) dalam menghambat pertumbuhan jamurC.albicans.Ekstrak metanol daun gelinggang memiliki efektifitas yang hampir sama dengan dua kelompok perlakuan SDS yang beredar di pasaran(SDS 1 dan SDS 2).Kata kunci: Antijamur, Candida albicans, sediaan daun sirih (SDS), ekstrak daun Gelinggang (Cassia alata L.). ABSTRACT Candida albicans is one of pathogenic microorganisms that cause infections in the lumen of the organs of human body in the shape of the channel. Candida albicans in the reproductive tract and women urunaria tract is often known as "diseases of vaginal discharge". One way of overcoming the appearance of vaginal discharge is to clean the area using an antiseptic solution of femininity such as povidone iodine. Society in General also use material of betel leaf that has been circulating in the market. This material is also known as an antiseptic so that it can inhibit the growth of C. albicans. In addition to the betel leaf (Piper bitle l.), turns the leaves gelinggang or Chinese ketepeng (Cassia alata L.) also has antibacterial and antifungal activity.             The objective of this study was to compare the test potential antifungal Candida albicans gelinggang leaves (Cassia alata L.) with material of betel leaf that already circulating in the market(SDS).This research is experimental research using fungal isolates of C. albicans. The extraction process of leaf gelinggang done with the technique of maceration using methanol solvent, 96% alcohol, diethyl ether, and infusa. Extract and SDS tested of antifungal activity by using diffusion method using paper discs. The analysis of the test is done by measuring the resistance zone extracts and preparations betel leaf against mold growth.         The analysis of the value of the percentage of the activity of the methanol extracts of the leaves of the inhibitory zones c. alata indicates the absence of a significant difference with the SDS 1 (asymp. Sig. = 0.245) and with SDS 2 (asymp. Sig. = 0.882) in inhibiting the growth of c. albicans yeast.The methanol extract of gelinggang leaves treatment has effectiveness similar to the treatment of the two groups of SDS (SDS 1 and SDS 2) that is circulating in the market.Keywords: Antifungal preparations, Candida albicans, Betel leaf (SDS), Gelinggang leaf extract (Cassia alata L.).

The aim of this study is to investigate the Thymus vulgaris essential oil (TVEO) as an antifungal agent in aromatherapy and/or as an active ingredient in the prevention or management of topical inflammatory diseases. The chemical composition of TVEO was determined with gas chromatography and revealed the presence of 25 compounds. Carvacrol was found to be the major component (56.8%). Antifungal action of TVEO was determined in vitro by using different methods. By the disc diffusion method, TVEO showed more potent antifungal activity against Candida strains than the positive control. The diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ) varied from 34 to 60 mm for Candida yeasts. Significantly higher antifungal activity was observed in the vapor phase at lower quantities. Candida albicans and C. parapsilosis were the most susceptible strains to the oil vapor with DIZ varying from 35 to 90 mm. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of yeast were determined with an agar dilution method and revealed that MIC varied from 0.3 to 0.15 µL/mL for yeast species. The topical anti-inflammatory potential of TVEO was also explored in vivo with the croton oil-induced ear edema assay. TVEO exhibited a potent anti-inflammatory effect at all doses (100, 10 and 2 mg/kg), which were statistically similar (p > 0.05) to the positive control. This activity was also confirmed at the cellular level with histopathology analysis. Our results suggest the potential application of this carvacrol-rich TVEO in the prevention and management of fungal infections and topical inflammation and deserve further investigation for clinical applications. Furthermore, while the mode of action remains mainly undetermined and should be studied.
