The paper discusses the implementation of the ‘CUB E-journal One Search' tool as an alternative solution to commercial discovery services, which was designed using Google Custom Search by the Central Library, Central University of Bihar and its impact on the library users. A descriptive survey method was used for the study. The present study found that library users found CUB E-journal One Search as a useful tool to get their desired information out of 9000 subscribed e-resources in the university. Most of the users used CUB E-journal One Search frequently in order to find relevant articles, write their assignments and research articles. The study indicated that the library users were influenced by Google like single search boxes and wished to have same features. Further, users expected features like document recommendation, search filters, RSS and on-screen help from the discovery tool. The paper is a first attempt to study the impact of open source discovery tools on the library users. It will further give confidence to the librarians in developing countries to deploy open source search solutions using Google Custom Search in the libraries.

GUY’s forceful personality and abounding energy were a source of continual wonder and inspiration to his staff throughout his time as turbine designer. But he drove himself too hard; these great gifts were beginning to fail in the last phase of his career. In Guy’s boyhood locomotive work was the field most clearly offering scope for talent in mechanical engineering. Guy trained as a pupil under the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Taff Vale Railway. He received his technical education at the University College of South Wales from 1907 to 1910. He was a hard worker and academically brilliant. He obtained the college diplomas in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He did not take a degree as he had not matriculated. In later life the honorary degree of D.Sc. was conferred on him by the University of Wales.

It is well known that the thermodynamics is one of the most complicated subjects for students in the mechanical engineering curriculum. The new web-based Guided Self-Assessment Tool (GSATool) developed at the University of Toledo enables students to become actively engaged in the process of learning, to receive immediate feedback, to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses with the course material, and to better gauge their own learning levels and needs. The present paper describes the GSATool, its specifics and applications.

The problem of delays in returning library books is common to all categories of library users at the University of Zambia. However, little is known about what causes the delay in returning the borrowed books. To address this gap, the authors investigated circulation policies at Zambia’s leading academic library. The objective was to establish the effect of library regulations on the return of library books. Using a survey method, the study targeted 90 full-time students who were randomly selected. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences while qualitative data were coded and analyzed thematically. The results revealed that circulation policies have an effect on returning the borrowed books by users. These findings provide a useful contribution to the dearth of literature on this subject and offer valuable information to inform future planning.

Based on the theory of standardising the academic approach and human capital theory, this study gauged how the respondents from Cebu Technological University-Daanbantayan Campus Graduate School fared in the work arena. It describes the human capital afforded to them by the university, their employment status, the effect of school-related factors on their employment, and the extent of work values and skills’ contribution. The researchers utilized the descriptive research design’s survey method. Using a validated, modified Graduate Tracer Study instrument, the researchers sourced data from 273 respondents. Findings reveal that majority are employed with permanent status that afforded the country a stable fraction of its workforce – majority of whom is impacting the local area’s education industry. Although respondents found that school-related factors moderately affected their employment, the set of work values and skills afforded to them were 'highly contributive'. CTU-Daanbantayan Campus Graduate School has therefore been remarkably instrumental in its graduates and students’ employment. Keywords: Graduate tracer study; higher education institutions; human capital; school-related factors; soft skills

Globalization processes along with a dynamic life inevitably set new challenges for universities. The content of educational programs should be oriented not only to meet the needs of society in the modern world, but also to be predicted for the future. The institution of higher education should be open to the needs of the labour market, innovations and public queries. When preparing a specialist in a particular field of knowledge, the university is supposed to lay the foundations for adoption of innovations, continuous education, etc. One of the means of realizing the set goals is the introduction of the practice-oriented training. The purpose of the research is to analyze the development of the introduction of the literary theater in the educational process of Boris Grinchenko University of Kyiv. For this purpose, the mission of the Center of Competences «Literary Theater», created at the Department of Ukrainian Literature and Comparative Studies of the Institute of Philology, has been presented; students’ expectations for conducting a series of practical classes at the Center have been studied by using the survey method; meaningful achievements of introduction of the elements of theater pedagogy into the educational process of the University College have been conceptualized; the experience of readings in the course «Theory of Mass Communication in Communication» has been presented. For studying practical experience, empirical methods of pedagogical research have been laid as a basis. The results of the questionnaire show that in the first year students prefer personal development rather than professional improvement. Most of the answers have to do with the fears students would like to overcome. That is why the work in the Center is designed in a way to facilitate the formation of not only professional competencies, but also interactive skills: organizational, communicative, perceptual, predictive, etc. As a result, it poses the effective implementation of the practice-oriented educational strategy of the institution. The project work has shown that it is important to take videos of performances and intermediate stages of work with the subsequent obligatory analyses of what has been shot by a camera. Given the experience of the University College in the preparation of theatrical excursions, it is worth considering the possibility of touring and festival performances of students as a source of experience in the formation of a specialist. Scenario reading of an unknown text by students is an optimal form of working with students of non-philological specialties. In most cases, staging is merely an element of a practical training; however, it plays its significant part in the building of professional competencies

This study examined the awareness and usage of reference management software by faculty members of the University of Ilorin. Descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The Web-based questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The total population of the study is 1,496 people. From which the sample size of 306 was selected using Raosoft sample size calculator and total responses of 98 was returned, which represents the unit of analysis. Hence, the response rate for the study is 32%. The findings of the study revealed that EndNote and Mendeley are the most used reference management software by faculty members of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). Results show that faculty members were aware of EndNote and Mendeley to great extent. It was found that there is low usage of reference management software among faculty of the University of Ilorin; and that most of the faculty members have never used ProCites, Bookends, Papers and Qiqqa. It was concluded that there is a positive significant relationship between awareness and usage of reference management software by faculty members. It was recommended that faculty members should be trained on how to make use of the most used reference management software.

Abstract MEMS curriculum development in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan is presented. A course curriculum structure that integrates both mechanical and electrical engineering courses is proposed for mechanical engineering students who are interested in MEMS research. The proposed curriculum starts from undergraduate study and finishes at the Ph.D. level. Two new graduate-level MEMS courses are proposed. They are “Introduction to MEMS” for senior and entry-level, graduate students and “Advanced MEMS” for graduate students. The first course has been experimentally taught at the University of Michigan for the past three years and the class assessments are summarized and analyzed in this paper. It is clear from the student responses that for more advanced MEMS courses should be offered. The vision of the future MEMS curriculum development has also been discussed with the suggestion of the development a new undergraduate-level MEMS course in the college of engineering.
