Mangroves are an important habitat for fish communities, as spawning, growing and foraging areas. This study aims to compare the species composition, presence frequency and structure of fish communities in different mangrove habitats. The research was conducted at Banyuurip Mangrove Center, Ujung Pangkah District, Gresik Regency, East Java, during July-August 2020. Determination of purposive sampling locations based on physical differences in mangrove habitats. Systematic sampling method was used to estimate the number of mangrove species using belt transects. Fish sample collection uses basic gill nets that are placed at high tide in each mangrove habitat. The results showed that the total number of individual mangrove vegetation was 505 from 12 species, the number of species and individual mangrove vegetation differed between habitats, and the highest was found in coastal mangrove habitats. The number of fish was found as many as 181 individuals from 11 species, 10 families and 5 orders. The number and composition of species, families and fish orders differ between mangrove habitats, with the highest number in coastal mangrove habitats. Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) dominate the estuary mangrove habitat and giant trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) dominate the coastal mangrove habitat. There are variations in the structure of fish communities between mangrove habitats, the dominance index value of the fish community in the estuary mangrove habitat is higher and in the medium category, while the coastal mangrove habitat is in the low category. On the other hand, the diversity index value of the fish community in the coastal mangrove habitat is in the high category and the estuary mangrove habitat is in the low category.

In order to analyze the time-space variation of the fish fauna in the surf zone fish communities at Ilha do Cardoso State Park, São Paulo, Brazil, four consecutive hauls were done over a year on three beaches with different degrees of exposure, at low and high tide. To evaluate the influence of each abiotic variable over the fish community, a Canonical Correspondence Analysis was conducted. We identified 7,286 individuals belonging to 20 families and 47 species, most specimens collected were juveniles. At low tide, the highest diversity and richness values were calculated while the highest dominance was obtained at high tide. As for the number of species collected at the three beaches, stood out for the lower values the cooler months, between June and September. Abiotic variables explained 41.3% of the variability of biological data, where 11.4% corresponds to the spatial variation. Meanwhile the temporal variables accounted for 31.9% of the variation in abundance, where 26.3% of the variance explained nycthemeral variation. Additionally two groups were clearly observed between months with low and high temperature. However in this variable, the tidal variation, excluding the seasonal effect, explained 6.2%, while seasonality, excluding tide effect, explained 26.3%. Although the main measurable seasonal changes were related to temperature, water temperature showed a low percentage of explanation in the fish fauna variability (2.7%). Finally, it is emphasized that the seasonal changes in surf zone fish community primarily reflect patterns of recruitment determined by the reproductive activity and coastal circulation.

Diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1215-1221. The purpose of the study was to analyze the flora diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra. Data collected were the number and girth diameter of mangrove tree species, and aquatic ecology parameters using transect method. The sample plots size were 2m×2 m; 5m×5 m; 10m×10 m; for seedling, sapling, and tree, respectively. The observation plots were arranged in a row of 120 m length on two sides of the forest edge, namely Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank. Data were analyzed using importance value index (IVI), Simpson’s diversity index and Sørensen’s community similarity. The study revealed that there were differences in mangrove characteristics in two study sites. There were 57 plant species identified inside and outside sample plots, but only 15 species (26.32%) among them were categorized as true mangrove species. Inside the sample plots, there were 11 and 10 mangrove tree species recorded on the Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank, respectively, but only 7 species among them were found in both sites. The mangroves on Calik Riverbank were dominated by Nypa (IVI 53.59%) and Bruguiera (51.12%), while those on Banyuasin Riverbank were dominated by Sonneratia (66.91%) and Avicennia (51.73%). The Simpson’s diversity index for Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank was 0.82 and 0.78, respectively, whereas the Sørensen’s coefficient of community between the two sites was 0.67.

Kampung Baru is an area on Bintan Island which is located in Sebong Lagoi Village, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands Province. This study aimed at determine the structure of the macrozoobenthos community, the condition of the physico-chemical parameters of the waters and the relationship between macrozoobenthos and water quality. This research was conducted using a survey method. Sampling site points of this study using random sampling method with 30 sampling site points at high and low tide. The parameters measured are physical, chemical and biological parameters of the water. The results showed that there were 18 species of macrozoobenthos consisting of 4 classes of macrozoobenthos and 3 phylum at 30 sampling site points, namely mollusca, annelida, and arthhopoda phylum. Based on the ecological index value, it is known that the macrozoobenthos species in Kampung Baru waters are still classified as low with disproportionate conditions. The values ​​of diversity index (low), uniformity index (high) and dominance index (low). Water quality of Kampung Baru waters at high tide still meet quality standards of Kepmen-LH No. 51 of 2004, but at low tide the values ​​of temperature, DO, and salinity parameters did not meet quality standards. The relationship between macrozoobenthos parameters and water quality using PCA analysis where density parameters have a relationship with two parameters, namely temperature and pH.

 Environmental characteristics can influence the distribu-tion of animal communities including fish in aquatic habitats such as a river. The study of fish communities in Cisadea River aimed to learn the relation between the fish community structure and the environmental characteristics of the river itself. This research was conducted in Cisadea River, Cianjur Regency, West Java, Indone-sia during dry season from July 2012 until February 2013. Samples of fish were caught using active fishing gear (Electrofishing Gear, spreading nets, scoop, lift net) and passive fishing gear (trap). The results showed that the quality of the physical chemistry of Cisadea waters was still in the normal range that could support fish life. The fish community in Cisadea River consisted of 11 orders, 26 families, 35 genera and 48 species. During the study, Rhyacichthys aspro (19,85%) and Glyptothorax plathypogon (20,15%) were the domi-nant species caught. The diversity index value (H’) was 2.87 (mid-dle category) with the dominance value of 0.09 (low category) and evenness value of 0.74 (high category). Moreover, community simi-larities according to the presence of species made the LC1 and LC2 locations in one group while the LC3 locations in a separate group.

Muara Sungai merupakan perairan semi tertutup yang terletak di bagian hilir sungai dan masih berhubungan dengan laut sehingga memungkinkan untuk terjadinya pencampuran dua massa air, yakni air tawar dan air laut. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui komposisi dan kelimpahan larva ikan, mengetahui perbedaan struktur komunitas pada saat pasang dan surut. Metode yang di gunakan adalah metode survei yang dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei 2018 di Muara sungai Morosari Sayung, Demak. Sampling dilakukan pada 3 stasiun dengan kondisi pasang dan surut. Variabel yang diukur antara lain Komposisi, Kelimpahan Larva ikan dan Struktur komunitas pada saat pasang dan surut. Hasil penelitian didapatkan Larva ikan pada saat pasang di stasiun I sebanyak 43 ind, stasiun II diperoleh larva  ikan sebanyak 22 ind dan stasiun III sebanyak 34 ind. Hasil penelitian didapatkan pada saat surut di stasiun I sebanyak 24 ind, stasiun II 22 ind dan stasiun III sebanyak 34 ind. Keseluruhan larva ikan yang tertangkap terdiri dari 10 famili yaitu Nemipteridae, Mugilidae, Gobiidae, Ambassidae, Acrididae, Chanidae, Engraulidae, Labridae, Scatophagidae dan Lactaridae. Indeks keanekaragaman pada saat pasang termasuk dalam kategori rendah dan sedang dengan nilai berkisar 0,99-1,6. Indeks keseragaman berkisar antara 0,78-0,91 maka tergolong kedalam kategori tinggi atau stabil. Nilai indeks Dominasi termasuk kedalam dominasi rendah dan sedang dengan nilai berkisar antara 0,22-0,40. Nilai indeks keanekaeragaman pada saat surut masuk dalam kategori rendah dan sedang dengan nilai berkisar 0,91-1,41. Indeks keseragaman berkisar 0,66-0,91 masuk dalam kategori stabil. Dominasi berkisar antara 0,32-0,45, dengan nilai tersebut maka dapat dikategorikan Dominasi sedang.  Estuary is a semi-closed waters located in the downstream part of the river and still in contact with the sea, allowing for mixing of two water masses, namely fresh water and sea water. The purpose of this research is to find out the composition and abundance of fish larvae, to know the differences in community structure during high and low tide levels. The method used in this research is a survey method conducted in May 2018 in the river estuary of Morosari Sayung, Demak. Sampling was carried out at 3 tidal and low tide stations. Variables measured include Composition and Abundance of fish larvae and community structures during highs and low tide level. The research result showed that 43 ind larvae at high tide at station I, were 22 ind at stations II, were obtained and 34 ind stations III. The results of the research were obtained at low tide at station I as many as 24 ind, station II 22 ind and station III as many as 34 ind. All captured fish larvae consist of 10 families namely Nemipteridae, Mugilidae, Gobiidae, Ambassidae, Acrididae, Chanidae, Engraulidae, Labridae, Scatophagidae and Lactaridae. The diversity index value at the high tide entered in the low and medium category ranged from 0.99 to 1.6. Uniformity lindex ranges from 0.78 to 0.91 in the medium category. Domination ranges from 0.22 to 0.40, with this value the entire research station into the category there is no dominance. The diversity index value at the low tide entered in the low and medium category ranged from 0.91 to 1.41. The uniformity index ranges from 0.66 to 0.91 included in the stable category. Domination ranges from 0.32-0.45 with this value can be categorized medium.

Gastropods are one of the biota that live in association with mangrove habitat. This study aims to compare the species composition and structure of the gastropod community in different mangrove habitats. This research was conducted in Banyuurip Mangrove Center (BMC), Ujung Pangkah-Gresik during July-August 2020. Determination of the observation station purposively based on physical differences in mangrove habitat. Estimation of mangrove and gastrode density by systematic sampling method using belt transects. There were 12 mangrove species with the highest number of species in the coastal mangrove habitat, with the highest species composition and density of Avicennia marina. The highest mangrove density was found in coastal mangrove habitats for all criteria. The number of gastropods found were 2,171 specimens belonging to 15 species, 5 families and 5 orders. The highest number of species, families and orders in coastal mangrove habitat were 1,191 specimens, 11 species from 5 families and 5 orders, the lowest was in estuarine mangrove habitat as many as 980 specimens from 9 species, 2 families and 2 orders. Densities of gastropods differ between mangrove habitats, with the highest density in coastal mangrove habitats and the lowest in estuarine mangrove habitats. The composition and density of the highest gastropods species in the estuary mangrove habitat is Cassidula aurisfelis and in the coastal mangrove habitat is Pirenella cingulata. The importance of conservation and rehabilitation efforts for mangroves that have been degraded to support the gastropods associated in it.

Kondisi kesehatan vegetasi mangrove yang berada di daratan dan pulau – pulau kecil sangat penting dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem pesisir dan laut. Perbedaan kondisi tumbuh mangrove dapat mempengaruhi dinamika perubahan vegetasi dan tutupan kanopi mangrove. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur, komposisi dan tutupan kanopi mangrove di Perairan Bakauheni, Kabupaten Lampung Selatan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode deskriptif. Penentuan titik atau stasiun sampling dengan menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Metode pengambilan data vegetasi mangrove dengan metode plot sampling dan pengambilan data tutupan kanopi mangrove dengan metode hemispherical photography. Penelitian ini dilakukan di 4 lokasi yaitu Desa Kramat (DK), Desa Muara Bakau (DMB), Pulau Rimau Balak (PRB), dan Pulau Kandang Balak (PKB) yang terdiri dari 4 stasiun penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kawasan Perairan Bakauheni yang terdiri dari 4 lokasi peneltiian ditemukan 14 spesies mangrove di dalam plot dan di luar plot penelitian. Nilai Kerapatan mangrove berkisar 966–1634 ind/ha. Nilai Indeks Keanekaragaman (H’) dan Keseragaman (J’) di lokasi penelitian termasuk dalam kategori rendah. Hasil persentase tutupan kanopi mangrove termasuk kategori padat berkisar 72,04±13,18% – 86,41±1,08%. The health condition of mangrove vegetation on land and small islands is very important in maintaining the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems. Differences in mangrove area conditions can affect the dynamics of changes in vegetation and mangrove canopy cover. This study aims to analyze the structure, composition and cover of mangrove canopies in Bakauheni Waters, South Lampung Regency. The method used in this research is descriptive method. Determination of the point or sampling station using purposive sampling method. The method of collecting mangrove vegetation data using plot sampling method and mangrove canopy cover data collection using hemispherical photography method. This research was conducted in 4 locations, namely Kramat Village (DK), Muara Bakau Village (DMB), Rimau Balak Island (PRB), and Kandang Balak Island (PKB) consisting of 4 research stations. The results showed that the Bakauheni Waters area which consisted of 4 research sites found 14 mangrove species inside the plot and outside the research plot. Mangrove density values range from 966-1634 ind/ha. The value of Diversity Index (H') and Uniformity (J') in the study location is included in the low category. The percentage yield of mangrove canopy cover including the dense category ranges 72.04±13.18% - 86.41±1.08%.

Fish communities play an important role in determining the dynamics of marine ecosystems, while the evaluation and formulation of protective measures for these fish communities depends on the quality and quantity of data collected from well-designed sampling programs. The ecological model was used first to predict the distribution of the demersal fish community as the “true” population for the sampling design. Four sampling designs, including simple random sampling, systematic sampling, and stratified sampling with two sampling effort allocations (proportional allocation and Neyman allocation), were compared to evaluate their performance in estimating the richness and biodiversity indices of the demersal fish community. The impacts of two different temperature change scenarios, uniform temperature and non-uniform temperature increase on the performance of the sampling designs, were also evaluated. The proportional allocation yielded the best estimates of fish community richness and biodiversity relative to a synthetic baseline. However, its performance was not always robust relative to the simulated temperature change. When the water temperature changed unevenly, systematic sampling tended to perform the best. Thus, it is important to adjust the strata for a stratified sampling when the habitat experiences large changes. This suggests that we need to carefully evaluate the appropriateness of stratification when temperature change-induced habitat changes are large enough to result in substantial changes in the fish community.

Biodiversity and ecosystem function are often correlated, but there are multiple hypotheses about the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Ecosystem functions such as primary or secondary production may be maximized by species richness, evenness in species abundances, or the presence or dominance of species with certain traits. Here, we combined surveys of natural fish communities (conducted in July and August, 2016) with morphological trait data to examine relationships between diversity and ecosystem function (quantified as fish community biomass) across 14 subtidal eelgrass meadows in the Northeast Pacific (54° N 130° W). We employed both taxonomic and functional trait measures of diversity to investigate if ecosystem function is driven by species diversity (complementarity hypothesis) or by the presence or dominance of species with particular trait values (selection or dominance hypotheses). After controlling for environmental variation, we found that fish community biomass is maximized when taxonomic richness and functional evenness is low, and in communities dominated by species with particular trait values – those associated with benthic habitats and prey capture. While previous work on fish communities has found that species richness is positively correlated with ecosystem function, our results instead highlight the capacity for regionally prevalent and locally dominant species to drive ecosystem function in moderately diverse communities. We discuss these alternate links between community composition and ecosystem function and consider their divergent implications for ecosystem valuation and conservation prioritization.

In order to look at changes in coral and reef fish communities during the period of 2006 to 2013, this research was carried out at Bunaken National Park (BNP) with 26 observation sites. The existing data and information of reef fish communities in the park generally could not be used as representative for describing the whole region. Percentage of coral cover and fish abundance during the study period shows that Bunaken Island is more similar to other locations. Reef fish community structure as seen from ecological index (H' at all sites being categorized, E category labile and low category C) shows the condition of the reef fish community is still good. Changes in the structure of reef fish communities showed declining conditions compared to 2006, and coral cover continued to decrease compared to 1998 and 2007. Good overall reef fish and coral cover have decreased; it is thought to be related to the pressure in BNP. Some of the pressures in the region were (i) increasing numbers of domestic as well as foreign visitors, (ii) increasing number of residents in the region, as well as the burden of waste and trash from the Bay of Manado. Penelitian dilakukan di Taman Nasional Bunaken (Utara dan Selatan)   pada 26 lokasi  pengamatan untuk menganalisis perubahan struktur komunitas ikan karang melalui kajian dari suatu time series data dari beberapa penelitian sebelumnya. Data primer mengenai ikan-ikan karang diperoleh melalui visual sensus bawah air yang bersamaan dengan observasi terumbu karang menggunakan point intercept transect. Nilai persentase tutupan karang dan kelimpahan ikan menunjukkan bahwa pada lokasi pengamatan Pulau Bunaken paling baik dibandingan lokasi lainnya. Struktur komunitas ikan karang yang dianalisis dengan indeks ekologi menunjukkan indeks keanekaragaman (H’) di semua site masuk kategori sedang, indeks kesamaan (E) kategori labil dan indeks Dominansi (C) kategori rendah. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kondisi komunitas ikan karang masih baik, sekalipun  perubahan struktur komunitas ikan karang menunjukkan kondisi yang menurun dibandingkan tahun 2006, begitu juga tutupan karang yang terus turun dibandingkan tahun 1998 dan 2007. Secara keseluruhan baik ikan karang maupun tutupan karang mengalami penurunan, hal ini diduga terkait dengan tekanan yang dialami kawasan TN. Bunaken. Salah satu tekanan terhadap kawasan adalah jumlah turis dari dalam maupun luar negeri yang semakin meningkat tiap tahunnya, penambahan jumlah penduduk di dalam kawasan, serta beban limbah dan sampah dari Teluk Manado.
