Good communication skills are important for soccer referees, but it remains unclear what exactly constitutes good referee communication. In this article, we focus on the role of verbal framing by soccer referees by contrasting the effects of procedural frames (focusing on rules and regulations) and relational frames (focusing on relational aspects) on perceptions of referee competence. We conducted an experiment ( N = 97) in which soccer referees used either procedural or relational frames to communicate about different types of in-game situations (yellow card and offside) to players. Results demonstrate that spectator perceptions of impartiality and confidence did not differ depending on the type of frame used. However, relational (vs. procedural) frames did increase spectator perceptions of respectfulness and communication skills. Soccer referees are recommended to use relational over procedural frames when communicating to players during a match.

Students often experience significant challenges in adopting discipline-specific terminology and conforming to related writing expectations that are embedded in course materials, assignments, and discussions. Further, although written communication skills are desired by employers and broadly recognized as critical to business success, students commonly underestimate the essential role of these skills in their careers. Additional research was needed in terms of what types of resources might improve both student writing and related awareness regarding the value of written communication skills. This chapter summarizes a study that examined an intervention in the form of a supplemental (in-course), self-paced, instructional unit designed to address the above-described challenge.

Hospital-based palliative care (HBPC) is often the primary contact between patients and the field of palliative care. As such, HBPC programs must be built to withstand the challenges and demands of the changing healthcare landscape and the shifting, often complex needs of the inpatient consultation. Time, energy, strong interpersonal communication skills, and dedication are key elements to building a successful HBPC program. Attention to detail and attentiveness to patient wishes round out the foundation of the continuum. HBPC is a forum for expansion of palliative care services into the medical clinics, outreach facilities, community-based practices, and home care venues. The role of nursing across this spectrum of care amid advancing chronic illness is a vital aspect of programmatic success. Ongoing education and research must be offered and resourced for HBPC and palliative care in general to remain steadfast and successful against the background of national healthcare reform.

Aim: This report explores the process of weight-related genomic information provision considering patient race as an important potential moderator of patient response. Methods: Health beliefs and perceived stigma were assessed following provision of genomic (versus behavioral) information by a virtual reality-based physician using either a supportive or directive communication style. Participants included 168 women with overweight. Results: Genomic explanations, combined with supportive communication, resulted in some improved health behavior-related and interpersonal outcomes for white patients, but not black participants. Black participants, on average, did not have diminished outcomes when provided with genomic information. Conclusion: Genomic communications may elicit more positive interpersonal responses than behavioral explanations among both majority and minority populations, but these effects may be moderated by patient race.
