The growing trend of sharing and acquiring news through social media platforms and the World Wide Web has impacted individuals as well as societies, spreading misinformation and disinformation. This trend—along with rapid developments in the field of machine learning, particularly with the emergence of techniques such as deep learning that can be used to generate data—has grave political, social, ethical, security, and privacy implications for society. This paper discusses the technologies that have led to the rise of problems such as fake news articles, filter bubbles, social media bots, and deep-fake videos, and their implications, while providing insights from the Islamic ethical tradition that can aid in mitigating them. We view these technologies and artifacts through the Islamic lens, concluding that they violate the commandment of spreading truth and countering falsehood. We present a set of guidelines, with reference to Qur‘anic and Prophetic teachings and the practices of the early Muslim scholars, on countering deception, putting forward ideas on developing these technologies while keeping Islamic ethics in perspective.

One of the active sciences or studies whose importance is rising is the science of sentiment analysis. The reason is due to the increasing sources of data that require investigation. Among the most valuable sources is Twitter, in addition to Facebook and other social media platforms. The objective of sentiment analysis is to classify sentiment/opinions of users as positive, negative, or neutral from textual data. This analysis is valuable for many applications that require understanding people's or users' opinions and emotions about a particular topic, product, or service. Several researchers tackle the problem of sentiment analysis using machine learning algorithms. In this paper, a comparative study is presented of various researches conducted a sentiment analysis on social media and especially on Tweets. The survey carried out in this paper provides an overview of preprocessing steps, machine learning algorithms, and approaches used for sentiment classification during the period 2015-2020.

AbstractIn the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedent amounts of fake news and hoax spread on social media. In particular, conspiracy theories argued on the effect of specific new technologies like 5G and misinformation tarnished the reputation of brands like Huawei. Language plays a crucial role in understanding the motivational determinants of social media users in sharing misinformation, as people extract meaning from information based on their discursive resources and their skillset. In this paper, we analyze textual and non-textual cues from a panel of 4923 tweets containing the hashtags #5G and #Huawei during the first week of May 2020, when several countries were still adopting lockdown measures, to determine whether or not a tweet is retweeted and, if so, how much it is retweeted. Overall, through traditional logistic regression and machine learning, we found different effects of the textual and non-textual cues on the retweeting of a tweet and on its ability to accumulate retweets. In particular, the presence of misinformation plays an interesting role in spreading the tweet on the network. More importantly, the relative influence of the cues suggests that Twitter users actually read a tweet but not necessarily they understand or critically evaluate it before deciding to share it on the social media platform.

Fake or false information on social media platforms is a significant challenge that leads to deliberately misleading users due to the inclusion of rumors, propaganda, or deceptive information about a person, organization, or service. Twitter is one of the most widely used social media platforms, especially in the Arab region, where the number of users is steadily increasing, accompanied by an increase in the rate of fake news. This drew the attention of researchers to provide a safe online environment free of misleading information. This paper aims to propose a smart classification model for the early detection of fake news in Arabic tweets utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, Machine Learning (ML) models, and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) as a wrapper-based feature selection approach. Arabic Twitter corpus composed of 1862 previously annotated tweets was utilized by this research to assess the efficiency of the proposed model. The Bag of Words (BoW) model is utilized using different term-weighting schemes for feature extraction. Eight well-known learning algorithms are investigated with varying combinations of features, including user-profile, content-based, and words-features. Reported results showed that the Logistic Regression (LR) with Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) model scores the best rank. Moreover, feature selection based on the binary HHO algorithm plays a vital role in reducing dimensionality, thereby enhancing the learning model’s performance for fake news detection. Interestingly, the proposed BHHO-LR model can yield a better enhancement of 5% compared with previous works on the same dataset.

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease is one of the neurodegenerative disorders. It initially starts with innocuous symptoms but gradually becomes severe. This disease is so dangerous because there is no treatment, the disease is detected but typically at a later stage. So it is important to detect Alzheimer at an early stage to counter the disease and for a probable recovery for the patient. There are various approaches currently used to detect symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) at an early stage. The fuzzy system approach is not widely used as it heavily depends on expert knowledge but is quite efficient in detecting AD as it provides a mathematical foundation for interpreting the human cognitive processes. Another more accurate and widely accepted approach is the machine learning detection of AD stages which uses machine learning algorithms like Support Vector Machines (SVMs) , Decision Tree , Random Forests to detect the stage depending on the data provided. The final approach is the Deep Learning approach using multi-modal data that combines image , genetic data and patient data using deep models and then uses the concatenated data to detect the AD stage more efficiently; this method is obscure as it requires huge volumes of data. This paper elaborates on all the three approaches and provides a comparative study about them and which method is more efficient for AD detection. It is evident that there has been enormous growth in terrorist attacks in recent years. The idea of online terrorism has also been growing its roots in the internet world. These types of activities have been growing along with the growth in internet technology. These types of events include social media threats such as hate speeches and comments provoking terror on social media platforms such as twitter, Facebook, etc. These activities must be prevented before it makes an impact. In this paper, we will make various classifiers that will group and predict various terrorism activities using k-NN algorithm and random forest algorithm. The purpose of this project is to use Global Terrorism Database as a dataset to detect terrorism. We will be using GTD which stands for Global Terrorism Database which is a publicly available database which contains information on terrorist event far and wide from 1970 through 2017 to train a machine learning-based intelligent system to predict any future events that could bring threat to the society.

Mining Telugu news data and categorizing based on public sentiments is quite important since a lot of fake news emerged with rise of social media. Identifying whether news text is positive, negative, or neutral and later classifying the data in which areas they fall like business, editorial, entertainment, nation, and sports is included throughout this research work. This research work proposes an efficient model by adopting machine learning classifiers to perform classification on Telugu news data. The results obtained by various machine-learning models are compared, and an efficient model is found, and it is observed that the proposed model outperformed with reference to accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.

Social media platforms play a tremendous role in the tourism and hospitality industry. Social media platforms are increasingly becoming a source of information. The complexity and increasing size of tourists' online data make it difficult to extract meaningful insights using traditional models. Therefore, this scoping and comprehensive review aimed to analyze machine learning and deep learning models applied to model tourism data. The study revealed that deep learning and machine learning models are used for forecasting and predicting tourism demand using data from search query data, Google trends, and social media platforms. Also, the study revealed that data-driven models can assist managers and policymakers in mapping and segmenting tourism hotspots and attractions and predicting revenue that is likely to be generated, exploring targeting marketing, segmenting tourists based on their spending patterns, lifestyle, and age group. However, hybrid deep learning models such as inceptionV3, MobilenetsV3, and YOLOv4 are not yet explored in the tourism and hospitality industry.
