The result of this study shows that there are 14 translation techniques found in the data of 1386 direct speeches. The percentage of each technique is as the followings: (1) adaptation occurs 147 times and represents 10.6%, (2) borrowing occurs 38 times and represents 2.74%, (3) calque occurs 20 times and represents 1.44%, (4) compensation occurs 4 times and represents 0.3%, (5) discursive creation occurs once and represents 0.1%, (6) established equivalent occurs 9 times and represents 0.65%, (7) generalization occurs 345 times and represents 24.9%, (8) literal translation occurs 572 times and represents 41.27%, (9) modulation occurs 4 times and represents 0.3%, (10) particularization occurs 7 times and represents 0.5%, (11) reduction occurs 96 times and represents 7%, (12) transposition occurs 11 times and represents 0.8%, (13) linguistic amplifi cation occurs 118 times and represents 8.5%, and (14) linguistic compression occurs 14 times and represents 1.01%.

The differences in two linguistic and cultural systems have made obstacles in translation. Thus, this research is aimed at analysing the translation technique used by the student in translating the narrative text. The data focused on the translation of The Tale of Tom Kitten from English to Indonesian done by ten students of BIPA (Indonesian for non-native speaker) Dharmasiswa at STIBA Saraswati Denpasar. The first was reading the English version of The Tale of Tom Kitten and the Indonesian translation done by the students. The second technique was choosing the sentences that represent the use of translation techniques in translating the narrative text. The data collected were analysed through descriptive qualitative method. The data analysed were the results of the research. The translation strategies used to translate the narrative text were analysed. The techniques of analyzing the data followed three steps. This research is conducted as other researches discussing translation issues focused on identifying techniques implemented to translate a specified translation issue rather than identifying all issues which are possible to be obstacles for translators. However, a research covering as many issues as possible becomes important in order to contribute theories and solutions to ease translator’s job. The aim of this research is to identify translation issues in the English version of Donald Duck Comics. The data are texts contained in the comic panel involving words, phrases, clauses and sentences which are potential to be difficulties for translators. Document analysis is employed to collect the data by reading the comic thoroughly, and noting down them. The validation is conducted by focus group discussion involving one translation expert and three members of doctoral program students majoring in translation. The result of this research shows that there are nineteen (19) translation issues involving abbreviation, cultural terms, dialect, ellipsis, humor, idiomatic expressions, informal expressions, interjections, kinship terms, measurement unit terms, non-standard grammatical structure, onomatopoeia, pronoun, proper name, sarcastic expressions, slang, speaking fluency disorder, swearing and wordplay. The result of this research can be developed into a translation model providing a translation issues mapping along with translation techniques choices which can be used as a translators’ guide.

A linguistic deviation occurs when a writer chooses not to abide the rules of a standard language. It is one of the ways to achieve artistic merit. Through linguistic deviation, a writer can communicate unique experiences that cannot be effectively communicated by means of normal communicative resources. It is also a linguistic phenomenon that has an important psychological effect on readers. This article aimed at analyzing the linguistic deviation in Mata Air Air Mata Kumari and the techniques of translation in its English version, Spring of Kumari Tears. The three most used types of linguistic deviation found are semantic deviation (55.77 %), graphological deviation (20.19 %), and grammatical deviation (11.54 %). The rest are phonological and lexical deviation in a small percentage. Meanwhile, the three most used translation techniques are reduction (28.85 %), linguistic compression (23.07 %), and discursive creation (10.58 %). The rest are modulation, amplification, transposition, established equivalent, borrowing, and deletion. The findings indicated that the author mostly used semantic, graphological, and grammatical deviation to create unexpected surprises and make a strong impression to the readers as the means to attain the artistic merit. However, the artistic merit is simplified by the use of the translation techniques which compress the linguistic elements, reduce the message of the original text, and create temporary equivalence that is out of context. As a result, the translated version tends to be more concise and succinct.

The article is aimed to find out the Techniques of Translating English Figurative Expression in ‘Colours’ Magazine by Garuda Indonesia into Indonesian. There are three problems are discussed in this study, namely (1) types of figurative expressions found in the English version of ‘Colours’ magazine and their translation’s equivalence into Indonesian and (2) kinds of translation techniques applied in translating the English figurative expression into Indonesian, This research belongs to qualitative research and the data used in this study were taken from the ‘Colours’ magazine by Garuda Indonesia. The main theory which is applied in this study is taken from the theory of Molina & Albir (2002) in their book entitled Translation Techniques Revisited; A Dynamic and Functionalist Approach. Another theory applied is taken from the theory of McArthur (1992) in his book entitled The Oxford Companion on The English Language. Other supporting theories which are used to support this study are the theory of Larson (1998) in her book entitled Meaning-Based Translation and some other books considered relevant to the topic. The result showed that there are eleven kinds of English figurative expressions found in the data. They are antithesis, euphemism, hyperbole, idioms, irony, metaphor, metonimy, personification, pleonasm, simile and synecdoche. In translating techniques, the translator applied ten translating techniques, they are; adaptation, borrowing, compensation, description, established equivalent, linguistic comprehension, literal technique, modulation, reduction and transposition. In translating a figurative expression from SL into TL, some of the results showed that an English figurative expression is translated into Indonesian figurative translation but some of them can not maintain its figurativeness in Indonesian, therefore the English figurative expression is translated into Indonesian non-figuratively. Keywords: Techniques of Translating, English Figurative Expression, Colours Magazin
