This research investigates the vocational school students’ needs on the implementation of English teaching and learning that is focused on the target needs and learning needs. By adapting Hutchinson and Waters’ model (1987), questionnaire consisting of parts A and B was administered to 32 students. Part A deals with the target needs centred on the learner’s necessities, lacks and wants that are effectively functioned in the target situation. In contrast, part B concerns about learning needs that encompass learning inputs, procedures, teacher’s and learners’ role, and setting. Additionally, interviews were also conducted with the students and an English teacher to gather data in order to examine in-depth results of the practices of English teaching and to uncover possible areas of students’ language difficulties in learning English. The results suggested that the students have different perceptions of their necessities, wants, and lacks. The findings also demonstrated the students’ learning needs including the learning inputs, teaching-learning procedures, the teacher’s and learners’ role, as well as the teachinglearning settings.

Abstract: This study aims to find out the need analysis of teaching and learning English for vocational high school students. It is focused on the students’ needs, deficiencies, and desires. To find the source of knowledge to design proper English materials, this study was performed at one of Bina Informatika vocational high school of bintaro , Tangerang Selatan. A series of questionnaires were distributed to multimedia students to analyze their needs, shortcomings, and motivation to learn English for vocational purposes. This survey research using a series of questionnaires covering three measures to determine the needs of students for particular purposes on materials in learning English. There were 41 participants in this study involving the eleventh graders. In figuring out the majority decisions for each item asked, the data were evaluated quantitatively. In investigating the reasons for each result, open-ended interviews were conducted with both the teacher and the students. The result showed that the students were supposed to be able to use English for everyday contact that would be beneficial to their future jobs since fluency in speaking and grammar were burdening them. Therefore, these students need contextual teaching on the delivered topics. In conclusion, the results of this research can be a landmark for creating a package of materials in English learning for the students.   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui analisis kebutuhan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SMK. Hal ini difokuskan pada kebutuhan, kekurangan, dan keinginan siswa yang menjadi sasaran pembelajaran. Untuk mengetahui sumber pengetahuan dalam merancang materi bahasa Inggris yang tepat, penelitian ini dilakukan di SMK Bina Informatika di Bintaro, Tangerang Selatan. Serangkaian kuesioner dibagikan kepada siswa multimedia untuk menganalisis kebutuhan, kekurangan, dan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris untuk keperluan vokasional. Penelitian survei ini menggunakan serangkaian kuesioner yang mencakup tiga langkah untuk mengetahui kebutuhan siswa akan tujuan tertentu pada materi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Ada 41 peserta dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan siswa kelas sebelas. Dalam menentukan keputusan mayoritas untuk setiap item yang ditanyakan, data dievaluasi secara kuantitatif. Dalam menyelidiki alasan untuk setiap hasil, wawancara terbuka dilakukan dengan guru dan siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa diharapkan dapat menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk percakapan sehari-hari yang akan bermanfaat bagi pekerjaan mereka di masa depan karena kefasihan berbicara dan tata bahasa membebani mereka. Oleh karena itu, para siswa ini membutuhkan pengajaran kontekstual pada topik yang disampaikan. Kesimpulannya, hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi tonggak pembuatan bahan ajar bahasa Inggris bagi siswa.

<p>This article describes a study on the process of developing and using English teaching materials by English teachers in a vocational school. The study was initiated by observing the classroom activities which focused on how teachers used the teaching materials. Beside the observation process, the data also gathered through an interview between the researcher and the two teachers. The result of data analysis showed that the process of developing teaching materials consisted of two major steps; 1) student’s need analysis process and 2) materials adaptation process. Meanwhile, the developed materials such as pictures, videos, course books, and direct listening materials were applied in the arranged discussion activity. It can be sum up that the teachers developed teaching materials by considering student’s needs. The teaching materials were developed by adapting several existed teaching materials. They were then used mostly in the discussion activity and used as a brainstorming for students.</p>

The curriculum 2013 is the latest Indonesia curriculum that requires students to have 4 C’s learning (Critical thinking, Collaboration, Creativity and Communica-tion) as demanding of 21st century need. Especially for vocational school students, they have to be mastered in English as one of requirement for them to be involved in workforce. In the curriculum 2013 includes three main aspects that need to be measured; the implementation of core competence, the implementation the process of teaching and learning process and the implementation of assessment process. This study employed open-ended and close-ended questionnaires that analyzed statistically and descriptively. The finding of this study revealed the three aspects of the curriculum 2013 is well implemented yet the training and teacher development program are needed for the teachers to master the whole aspects this curriculum. Further, any attention from the students to the demands of this curriculum is also needed. Thus, it is recommended an effective and efficient trainings or in-house training of the 2013 curriculum for English teachers. Abstrak Kurikulum 2013 merupakan kurikulum nasional terbaru di Indonesia yang menuntut siswa untuk menguasai empat kecakapan Abad 21, yaitu berpikir kritis, kolaborasi, kreativitas, dan komunikasi. Terutama bagi sekolah kejuruan, siswa harus menguasai Bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu tuntutan dunia kerja. Dalam Kurikulum 2013 terdapat tiga aspek yang perlu diukur, yaitu (1) implementasi kompetensi inti, (2) implementasi proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran, dan (3) implementasi proses penilaian hasil belajar. Penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner terbuka dan tertutup yang hasilnya kemudian dianalisis menggunakan statistic deskriptif. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa tiga aspek dari Kurikulum 2013 telah diterapkan dengan baik, namun tetap memerlukan program pelatihan dan pengembangan guru untuk menguasai keseluruhan aspek kurikulum. Kedepannya, perhatian dari siswa terhadap tuntutan dari kurikulum ini juga diperlukan. Oleh karena itu, in-house training Kurikulum 2013 yang efektif dan efisien direkomendasikan untuk guru Bahasa Inggris. This study deals with developing the writing paragraph through quickwriting for junior high school at smp swasta pahlawan nasional. The objectives of this study were to find out to improve the students’ ability in writing paragraph of grade VIII students by using quickwriting strategy. Data data of the research was taken from the secondary grade of Junior High School Students at SMP Swasta Pahlawan Nasional Medan, which is taken from one class, contain 33 student. The data in this research collected by using interview and questionnaire. The interview and questionnaire will be given to collect the students’ need, problem and interesting in learning English, particularly in writing and using quick writing in teaching and learning.  In the teaching-learning process the teacher should prepare before conducting the lesson. The first is classroom procedures in teaching-learning process. Classroom procedures used by English teacher are opening, quickwriting, main activities (exploration-elaboration-confirmation), closing. There are some problems faced in the teaching-learning process. The problems faced are problem in developing idea, organizing idea, difficulties in vocabulary, tenses, and grammar, different capability of the students, and limited time. The consequently, the teacher should give solutions to cope the problems faced in teaching-learning process. So, the teacher should be creative to minimize the problem faced in teaching-learning process in order to make the students enjoy with the materials and develop student’s ability. Keywords : writing paragraph, quickwriting

Vocational High School is course with aim to prepare the students to have specific skills by having practical activities based on its study program. It has the same purpose with English for specific purposes (ESP) course which aims to meet the students’ specific language need. ESP courses help students to use English appropriately as well as accurately to perform their jobs in a various situations where they encounter their English language function. ESP course often begins with the students’ need. Students’ need analysis is needed to be identified to be able to meet the effective learning material based on what the students really need. This study aims to investigate the writing materials needs of eleventh grade students of Office Administration study program in Vocational High School from viewpoints of students. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis with questionnaire and interview method to collect the data. The subjects of the research were eleventh grade of Office Administration students that consisted of 34 students by using purposive sampling. The result indicated that the students have several needs in terms of target needs and learning needs. Target needs are divided into necessities, wants, and lacks. Based on the result of target needs, the students are lack of component of writing skills including express ideas, write with correct organization, use correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and use appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the text. Thus, the students need and want to learn those components of writing skills. Meanwhile, learning needs are divided into input, procedure, setting, and accessibility. The input is divided into content of materials, activities, and design. The teachers should pay attention more on those aspects to fulfill the students’ need to help them transition successfully to their future careers after graduation.

This research  is aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Nautical students at PIP Semarang and designing the appropriate material for Nautical students at PIP Semarang. This is a Research and Development project. The steps of doing this research are (1) need analysis (2) make syllabus (3) designing materials (4) expert consultation (5) try out material (6) evaluation. The subject of this research is the third-semester students of Nautical department at PIP Semarang. The instruments used are questionnaires for need analysis, interview guide and observation sheets. The data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative and qualitative. The results of the research recommend three  units namely (1) Initial Call (2) Message Marker and (3) On Board Communication Phrases which are developed with communicative approach. The research gives contribution to the teaching and learning English at Nautical Department of Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang.

Competency test material is an integral part of an assessment in learning process. What is to be measured in learning and the availability of instrument. The purpose of the study is to analyze the validity of competency test material, the reliability of the test material, and to determine the effectiveness of competency test material. This study employed research and development (R & D) method. The product developed in this study was the daily make up competency test material validated by using expert validation, and has been tested on students of the beauty program in vocational high school in May 2018. The validity of the product was achieved by using validity test, reliability by reliability test and effectiveness of competency test material using normalized-gain test analysis. The results of the study on the development of daily makeup competency test materials for vocational school students in beauty program showed that there were 3 aspects of assessments: knowledge, attitudes and skills. The effectiveness of knowledge competency test material was 20%; attitude 35%; and skill 85%. The testing material was proven to be able to assess students effectively and objectively.

This article provides information about a research aiming to identify causes of secondary school students’ failure to acquire English effectively and provide recommendations to relevant ministries to better deal with these problems.  A qualitative design involving a number of students as well as teachers from lower and upper secondary schools and pre-service teachers from a training college was used. Findings of this research revealed that issues of English teacher quality, English study program graduates’ quality, lack of English learning hours at school, the absence of extra-curricular activities for English exposure and English speaking environment, English national exam, the underuse and inexistence of facilities and ineffective monitoring system were found to be the major contributors of students’ English learning ineffectiveness. This study, therefore, recommends the relevant ministries to cope with these issues urgently or else this unfavorable situation will remain unchanged in future years.     Keywords: English, teaching, learning, quality, policy, change

Learning outside the classroom (outdoor study) is an effort to create learning, to avoid boredom and perceptual learning only in class. The approach to learning outside the classroom uses several methods such as assignment, question and answer, and learning while doing or practicing with learning situations while playing. Students get bored quickly with conventional methods. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of pre and post test using the method of learning outdoor study on Communication subjects to increase the learning achievement of Nursing Health Department Vocational High School students totaling 80 students. The design of this study is Quasi Experiment research. Data collection methods that will be used in this study are pre test and post test questionnaires distributed to students of the Nursing Department, before and after the Communication teaching and learning process using outdoor teaching methods and conventional methods. To analyze data using paired T Test. The results obtained are that there is a significance between the pre test and post test of the learning outdoor method, which is 0.00. But the use of conventional methods is not significant with a result of 0.50. Keywords: Learning method, outdoor, conventional

Analytical exposition text is one of the texts studied by eleventh-grade students, and they are asked to produce the analytical exposition text by themselves. However, they faced some difficulties that impede their teaching and learning of making the analytical exposition text. This research aimed to design Materials of Writing Analytical Exposition Text (MOWAET) as a supplementary teaching material to support teaching and learning analytical exposition text. This research was developmental research and applied ADDIE as the procedure to design the materials. Still, there were only three implemented phases in this research: analyzing, designing, and developing. MOWAET was the completed design product for teaching-learning analytical exposition text. The researcher interviewed an English teacher of SMA Negeri 4 Pontianak to do the analyzing phase. MOWAET was created by using PowerPoint and Animaker as the supporting software. The researcher used an internal evaluation to ensure that the product is usable in the development phase. The internal evaluation phase showed that MOWAET met all the criteria, including the objectives, the content, and the media option. Shortening, it was found that the materials of writing analytical exposition text (MOWAET) are usable to support teaching and learning analytical exposition text.
