This article aims at describing the rationale and principles of designing English teaching materials for teachers of non-English subjects. Those teachers use English as a medium of instruction. English is used to teach the subjects. To improve the teachers’ English skills, the school provided an English course. However, the teaching materials for those specific learners were not available. Therefore, designing materials is needed to precisely fulfil their needs of English in the target professional workplace. A needs analysis was conducted to gather information using questionnaires distributed to the non-English subject teachers as the learners. The data from the questionnaire were analysed qualitatively by interpreting and categorising in themes. Using the needs analysis result, a syllabus was then designed as the guidelines for developing the materials. This paper reports how the needs analysis process is employed to design a set of English teaching materials for nonEnglish subject teachers. The discussion highlighted the present situation, the target situation, the principles of designing English materials. The overview of the designed materials for teachers of non-English subjects was then presented.

One product of technology that can be used to develop teaching materials for the learning process is interactive multimedia which is a combination of various media in the form of text, graphics, audio, and interactions that are used to convey information messages from sender to receiver equipped with a controller which can be operated by the user. Efforts can be made to make learning effective one of which is the use of multimedia in interactive learning. Tritech Vocational School which will be the target of research is Information Technology Vocational High School. This school has implemented a learning system that utilizes technology as a medium and aids in learning activities, but not all subject teachers apply the same thing. Indonesian language learning in particular still uses teaching books as a guide and the only source of learning. This is one of the causes of learning activities in Indonesian language subjects tend to be monotonous and boring, because learning activities are still teacher-centered, so there is no interaction with students. This method of research is development research (Research and Development) which is a study used to produce certain products and test the effectiveness of these products. This research develops Indonesian language teaching materials in interactive multimedia-based negotiating text material for grade 10th in Tritech Informatika vocational Highschool, Medan, North Sumatera, Indoneisa.

English teaching material is really important, that is why a teacher should be able  to select the right book to use on teaching and learning process. One of the ways is by evaluating the textbook. This study aims to evaluate the English teaching materials covering its language content, language skills, and topics, used at  a Vocational High School based on Cunningsworth’s checklist. The data were taken by distributing checklist and conducting interview to one vice- principal who is also as a teacher of English and two English teachers at a Vocational High School. The data were analyzed by getting average and percentage. The methodology of the research is descriptive qualitative content analysis. Results  showed that language content in the textbook viewed from criteria of good English teaching materials are poor. The textbook only covers little grammar and vocabulary. The language skills practiced in the textbook according to criteria of good English teaching materials are poor for they are in general content and limited activities. While, according to criteria of good English teaching materials, the topics introduced in the textbook are poor too. The topics covered in the textbook are general topics.  It can be concluded that English teaching materials covering language content, language skills, and topics in the textbook are not appropriate for hotel accomodation students.   As suggestion, the four skills should be integrated in the topics in order to give more importance to grammar and communication skills. The topics content that relate to hospitality and tourism department specially for hotel accomodation department should be provided and added so it will be meaningful for the learners espesially the learners of hotel accomodation.
