The article presents the results of a long-term study (2014-2018) of the biological characteristics of growth and development of plants of the introduced species – red feather clover (Trifolium rubens L.) when growing grass stands for seeds in the soil-and-climatic conditions of the Volga-Vyatka region. The species was assessed for winter hardiness, the duration of the growing season, plant height, structure of seed grass stand, seed productivity and seed quality. Winter hardiness of red feather clover in all years of cultivation was high (more than 80 %). The development of plants took place according to the mid-season type: depending on the conditions of the year of growth, they reached the flowering phase for 61-75 days; ripening phase – for 82-105 days from the beginning of regrowth. The duration of grass stand flowering was 14-40 days, ripening – 15-39 days. During the phases of development, the species is responsive to changes in the meteorological conditions of the year of study. In the first and second years of life, the active formation of the root system of plants took place, therefore, taking into account the structure of the seed grass, the height of the plants, the density of the stalk and the proportion of generative stems in the grass, the number of heads and the weight of seeds per 1 m2 was lower than in subsequent years. Productive in seeds grass stand was formed since the third year of life and reached a plant height in the flowering phase of 49.2-56.2 cm, in the ripening phase – 50.4-63.4 cm. It was characterized by the density of the stems standing of 1019.7-1151.6 pcs/m2 with the proportion of generative stems – 96.0-99.6 %, the number of mature heads – 978.9-1147.0 pcs/m2 and seed productivity – 18.8-55.0 g/m2. Seed production was regular, despite strong fluctuations in yield. The seed material was of high quality: seed germination – 94-100 %, germination energy – 58.3-81.3 %, and was characterized by 1000-seed mass of 2.25-2.38 g, hard seed content – 9.1-20.0 %.

Seven species of three genera of perennial grasses for lawn agrophytocenoses on ashen-gray soils in a taiga zone were studied for the first time. The objective of the study was to identify the best samples of lawn grasses that can effectively use the agro-resource potential of natural climatic conditions of the research area. The width of a leave (texture) was used as one of the main indicators for the assessment of the decorativeness of a lawn grass stand. The samples were studied according to the methodological instructions of the All-Russian Williams Fodder Research Institute. Samples distinguished by grass stand high decorativeness were identified. Samples of meadow grass, bent grass and fescue grass, a variety of English bluegrass Yuventus are distinguished by complete winter hardiness. The lowest samples of meadow grass were varieties Yaskia, Limonsine, Barkenta; English bluegrass - Sport, Fiesta, Yuventus; bent grass - wild populations K-14272, K-14273, K-14265. Samples of English bluegrass - Yuventus, Primevere, K-14233 - are distinguished by the highest decorativeness of the grass stand in terms of the texture.

The article presents results of study of biological features of pannonian clover 'Snezhok' (created in the Federal Agricultural Scientific Center of North-East) at long-term use of a reproduction nursery (2011 sowing) for seeds. The soil-climatic conditions of research, the used material and assessment methods are described. The duration of periods of above-ground mass formation, height of plants, structure of stand and seed yield are determined. An elongation of the period from regrowth to the beginning of flowering with increasing of the stand's age was noted. The height of plants, yield of green mass and dry matter in the phase of head and seed ripening increased with the age of the grass stand. An increase in the number of generative stems, heads and mass of seeds per head was also observed. The level of seed productivity of pannonian clover depended more on the age of the grass stand than on the weather conditions of the growing season. We found that the potential seed productivity in favorable years can reach 8.48 kg/ha, while the actual seed yield on average over the years of research was 1.29 kg/ha, with fluctuations from 0.71 (2017) up to 4.63 kg/ha (2015).

Several studies reported a negative relationship between altitude and seed mass. In cactus species, seed mass has been also related to seedling morphology (size and shape). Here we studied Gymnocalycium monvillei (Lem.) Pfeiff. ex Britton & Rose, a cactus species with a wide altitudinal distribution, with the main aim of analyzing how altitude affects seed mass and seedling size (height and width) and shape (globose or columnar). We collected seeds from five sites along the entire altitudinal distribution of the species in the Córdoba Mountains (sites were located between 878 and 2230 m a.s.l.), encompassing a marked climatic gradient (6 °C of mean annual temperature difference between the extreme sites). Seed mass and seedling traits were measured in the laboratory. Seedling height increased with altitude, whereas seed mass was not related to this parameter. Seedlings became more globose (reduced surface/volume ratio) with decreasing altitude. Variation in seedling shape along the altitudinal gradient may be related to the contrasting climatic conditions to which seedlings are exposed, and could account for the wide altitudinal distribution of G. monvillei. Our results highlight the importance of seedling traits in the species’ response to climatic change.

For multiple-brooded species, the number of reproductive events per year is a major determinant of an individual's fitness. Where multiple brooding is facultative, its occurrence is likely to change with environmental conditions, and, as a consequence, the current rates of environmental change could have substantial impacts on breeding patterns. Here we examine temporal population-level trends in the proportion of female great tits ( Parus major ) producing two clutches per year (‘double brooding’) in four long-term study populations in The Netherlands, and show that the proportion of females that double brood has declined in all populations, with the strongest decline taking place in the last 30 years of the study. For one of the populations, for which we have data on caterpillar abundance, we show that the probability that a female produces a second clutch was related to the timing of her first clutch relative to the peak in caterpillar abundance, and that the probability of double brooding declined over the study period. We further show that the number of recruits from the second clutch decreased significantly over the period 1973–2004 in all populations. Our results indicate that adjustment to changing climatic conditions may involve shifts in life-history traits other than simply the timing of breeding.

The article emphasizes the importance of peas as a source of vegetative protein, and indicates on insufficient areas under peas both in Russia and in the Altai. One of the reasons of reducing its acreage is the high costs on peas planting and protecting from pests, diseases and weeds. Climate changing contributes to rapid development of such harmful diseases as ascohitoz, bacteriosis, fusarium, rust, significant number of weevil, pea aphid and moth mullet. Considering the main directions in pea breeding, it should be emphasized that the Altai Area, with its vast territory and diverse natural and climatic conditions, requires highly productive, well-adapted varieties of different use which are capable to effectively use agro-climatic resources of different zones. All this requires the active study of the source material, the selection of new, economically valuable forms and their introduction into the breeding process. It has been noted that the production requires more advanced varieties, the development of which is impossible without the presence of diverse source material. The purpose of the study was to identify the best productive plants in the pea collection of 2012-2017. The material has been represented by 113 variety samples of domestic and foreign selection. The varieties with best productivity were ‘Mnogoplodny 163’, ‘Rheinperle’, ‘Flagman 12’, ‘806’9, ‘Varyag’, ‘Altaisky Usaty’, ‘Pioner’, ‘LittleMarwel’, ‘Mnogoplodny 27’, ‘Zeleny Tsukat’, ‘Ryadovoy’, ‘576/80’. The best forage productivity was produced by ‘Novosibirets’, ‘Varyag’, ‘Pino’, ‘Zeleny Tsukat’, ‘Mnogoplodny 105’. The most fast-ripening varieties were ‘Rheinperle’ and ‘Pyrama’. The samples ‘Novosibirets’, ‘Varyag’, ‘Pino’ and ‘8067’ were characterized with high plant height. The samples ‘Pyrama’, ‘Flagman 12’, ‘Novosibirets’, ‘Sihirobana-Kinusaja’, the line ‘312’ produced large-sized kernels. The great lodge resistance has been shown by ‘Altaisky Usaty’, ‘Svetozar’, ‘Kamerton’, ‘Flagman 12’.

Abstract Plant growth is influenced by seed quality. Seeds need to be treated to prevent pest and disease disorders or to increase seed germination. Soybean planting was carried out in this study by the treatment of varieties and seed pre-treatment application before planting. The study aimed to measure the growth and yield of soybeans by varieties and seed treatment before planting, carried out in the Village of Nggembe, District of Bolo, Bima Regency. The study used factorial randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was soybean varieties consisting of two levels, namely Devon and Dena varieties, and the second factor was the application of pre-planting seed treatments consisting of four levels namely Cruiser, Marshall, Agrisoy, and without seed treatment, each treatment was repeated three times. Observations were made on the performance of agronomic crops and soybean yields. The results showed that the treatment of soybean varieties and the application of seed treatment had a significant influence on plant height and soybean productivity, and both treatments had interactions on parameters of plant height, number of filled pods, weight of 100 seeds, and soybean productivity with the best results successively produced by a combination of Devon-Control, Devon-Marshall, Devon-Agrisoy, and Dena-Cruiser.

One of the main factors in obtaining consistently high tomato yields is to optimize the plant nutrition area. Determination of the optimal plant density, on the one hand, prevents oppression of plants at increased density. On the other hand, to avoid unnecessary expenses from the irrational use of the cultivated area. Vegetables are one of the main suppliers of biologically active substances necessary for a good human nutrition. They give the body a lot of vitamins, fiber, hemicelluloses, pectin substances, organic acids, various carbohydrates, mineral salts and a number of other biochemical compounds. Tomato is one of the main protected ground crops for Ukraine. Compared to other crops, tomatoes give early and stable yields. The issue of planting density of tomatoes is still not fully resolved, these elements of technology are not adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the eastern part of the Left-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. The objective of our research was to determine the optimal crop density of hybrid tomato of indeterminate type in order to obtain the highest yield without reducing the quality of the product. The method of research. The research was carried out during 2018-2019. In film greenhouses, spring-summer crop rotation. The experiments were carried out with an indeterminate tomato hybrid: Tobolsk F1. Producers of seeds of indeterminate hybrids recommend different plant densities for growing conditions in film greenhouses 2.5-3.5 pcs/m2. Therefore, our research was planned to determine the optimal plant density of the indeterminate tomato hybrid Tobolsk F1 for film greenhouses. The total number of plants is 312 pcs. Sowing of seeds was carried out in the third decade of February. The seeds were sown into cassettes, and the seedlings were dived into pots (volume - 500 cm3) on time. Seedlings were grown using bottom irrigation and, at the age of 3-5 true leaves, the seedlings were planted on a test plot in a film greenhouse without heating. Research results. An analysis of phenological observations of plants showed that a change in the density of plants had practically no effect on the timing and rate of passage of the stages of organogenesis in plants, that is, in all variants of the experiment, the phases of development in plants began simultaneously. Indicators of plant parameters indicate that the data obtained both in the phase of mass flowering and mass fruiting of tomatoes differ among themselves. The difference in biometric parameters can be traced depending on the density of plants. Comparing the main biometric indicators, it can be noted that in the flowering phase, the height of plants ranged from 111.0 to 134.9 cm, in the fruiting phase - from 257.0 to 275.8 cm, while the plants differed in height by the density of 4.0 pcs/m2. The vegetative mass of a plant in the flowering phase was from 1884 g with a plant density of 2.5 pcs/m2 to 1144 g with a density of 4.0 pcs/m2. In the phase of flowering fruiting, the weight of the plant ranged from 1704 g to 1574 g, also decreasing with increasing density. In the flowering phase, an increase in the value of the leaf area indicator was observed to 5.8% with an increase in plant density, and in the fruiting phase, a slight decrease in the indicator to -1.8% was observed with an increase in plant density. So, according to biometric indicators, plants develop better with a density of 3.5 pcs/m2: tomato plants have the best indicators of vegetative mass and plant height, the leaf surface area varies within insignificant limits. The size of the fruits and the yield of standard tomato production are in direct proportion to the density of plants, that is, the more of them per unit area, the lower these indicators. In general, the increase in the density of tomato plants significantly affected the yield. Conclusions. Two-year researches have established that with an increase in plant density, in terms of leaf area in tomato plants of the Tobolsk F1 hybrid, on average, there was a slight fluctuation in the indicator at the level of 0.9-1.1%. The indicator of the vegetative mass of the plant ranged from -4.1 to +1.8% as compared to the control, also decreasing with increasing density. The indicator of plant height both in the flowering phase and in the fruiting phase, on the contrary, grew with an increase in plant density and ranged from -4.0 to + 7.1% compared to the control, while the plants differed in height by a density of 4.0 pcs/m2. In general, the studies carried out give grounds to conclude that in a spring film greenhouse, according to biometric indicators, on average, plants develop better with a density of 3.5 pcs/m2: tomato plants have the best ratio of vegetative mass, plant height and leaf area. The maximum yield of tomato hybrid Tobolsk F1 at the level of 15.8 kg/m2 in the eastern part of the Left-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine was obtained with a plant density of 3.5 pcs/m2.

The article presents the results on the use of paracuneal bulbs for re-harvesting seeds in a direct crop. The influence of the orientation of uterine bulbs during planting on the formation of paracuneal bulbs and seed productivity in the second year of vegetation was determined. The paracuneal bulbs were developing at the base of the flower shoots maintaining the same orientation as in the uterine bulbs when planted. Winter hardiness of paracuneal bulbs depended on orientation, just as with standard technology. Losses during the winter period ranged from 48% to 82%, increasing with an increase in the angle of deviation from the vertical position. The most vulnerable bulbs were the upside down. Paracuneal bulbs can be used to re-harvest seeds in a two-yield crop.

The importance of coffee cultivation in Nariño is reflected in the fact that 64% of its municipalities grow coffee. The ruggedness of its Andean topography provides great diversity in terms of climatic conditions, which, in one way or another, affect the behavior of coffee in all its physiological processes. Therefore, this study sought to identify the variation in the growth processes and production processes in the different coffee areas of this department, including the coffee-growing municipalities Sandoná, Consacá, La Florida and La Unión in the Department of Nariño, using experimental lots located at different altitude ranges (B <1600msnm; M between 1600 and 1800msnm and A >1800msnm). The statistical design used for each municipality was Random Complete Blocks with three treatments and sixteen repetitions. The recorded climatic variables included photosynthetically active radiation, ambient temperature, precipitation and relative humidity, and the evaluated physiological variables were plant height, number of leaves, basal stem diameter, number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, length of primary branches, number of knots per branch and leaf area index. The variable plant height was statistically higher in the upper zone (A) in the municipalities La Florida (79.95 cm) and Consacá (64.31cm); in La Florida, the number of branches and the LAI were higher in the upper zone plants, while the diameter of the stems was higher in the middle zone. In the other municipalities, these variables were not affected by the altitude.
