Forensic investigations in engineering term may be conducted to identify the causes of failure to facilitate the design of proper repairs, or to improve the performance or lifespan of a component, assembly, or structure. This paper presents the combination of geotechnical investigation and geophysical survey method as a forensic tool to predict the causes of pavement failure occurred along the coastal area of federal road FT005. The number and type of field testing are varying on each selected study area at Rengit and Semerah, Batu Pahat as this location constructed on soft soil area. Non-destructive testing (NDT) method using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) were chosen to be applied at the worst severity of the road failure. Three number of resistivity lines of 100m and 200m were laid out using ABEM Terrameter LS2 with gradient method of electrode arrays covering up to 40-meters depth. Then, further testing of destructive testing (DT) method using borehole drilling conducted near the ERT lines to obtain soil profile with SPT N-value measurement. The disturbed and undisturbed samples were obtained to carried out laboratory test for soil classification. After that, inspection of road pavement layers were implemented at five number of trial pit tests which excavated up to subgrade layer to determine the thickness of the materials used in road construction. Three number of mackintosh probe test were also conducted on top of the subgrade layer after the trenching to obtain the strength of the subgrade layer. The results presented showed that severe longitudinal cracking were the predominant premature failures on the roads studied due to settlement effect of soft soil. The analysis obtained from RES2DINV program stated that the subsurface profiling was dominantly in saturated condition which the resistivity value was less than 100 ohm.m. From the SPT N-value it is observed that, the very soft soil layer is up to 8 m followed by the soft to stiff clays soil. Another cause of failure was resulted from the differential settlement due to the effect of different design of road construction with varies material used. The reliability and efficiency of the instruments used were also discussed in this study.

CREDO RADON UA software provides an automated calculation of the strength of the pavement structures of non-rigid and rigid types, as well as the calculation of the strengthening of existing structures. In the article, one can see the main features and functionality of the CREDO RADON UA software, the main points in the calculations according to the new regulations. Information support of the design process includes necessary databases, informational and helping materials that make up the full support of the pavement design process. The concept of CREDO RADON UA 1.0 software is made on the use of elasticity theory methods in calculations of initial information models of pavements. Performing optimization calculations, the roadwear in CREDO RADON UA is designed in such a way that no unacceptable residual deformation occurs under the influence of short-term dynamic or static loading in the working layer of the earth bed and in the structural layers during the lifetime of the structure. The calculation algorithms were made in accordance with the current regulatory documents of Ukraine. CREDO RADON UA software allows user to create information bases on road construction materials and vehicles as part of the traffic flow for calculations. The presented system of automated modeling makes it easier for the customer to control the quality of design solutions, to reasonably assign designs to layers of reinforcement, to quickly make comparisons of calculations of different designs for the optimal use of allocated funds. Prospects for further improvement of the program should be the results of theoretical and experimental studies on filling the databases, which are used as information support for automated design of road structures. The reduction in natural resources and aspects of environmental protection necessitate alternative uses of waste materials in the area of construction. Recycling is also observed in road construction where mineral–cement emulsion (MCE) mixtures are applied. The MCE mix is a conglomerate that can be used to make the base layer in road pavement structures. MCE mixes contain reclaimed asphalt from old, degraded road surfaces, aggregate improving the gradation, asphalt emulsion, and cement as a binder. The use of these ingredients, especially cement, can cause shrinkage and cracks in road layers. The article presents selected issues related to the problem of cracking in MCE mixtures. The authors of the study focused on reducing the cracking phenomenon in MCE mixes by using an innovative cement binder with recycled materials. The innovative cement binder based on dusty by-products from cement plants also contributes to the optimization of the recycling process in road surfaces. The research was carried out in the field of stiffness, fatigue life, crack resistance, and shrinkage analysis of mineral–cement emulsion mixes. It was found that it was possible to reduce the stiffness and the cracking in MCE mixes. The use of innovative binders will positively affect the durability of road pavements.

Introduction. Growing volumes of road construction increase the need to expand and rationally use of raw materials. The need for stone materials can be solved through the wide spread using of local materials, recycled products of industry in the pavement base courses and decreasing the use of natural construction materials by replacing them with alternatives, including soils, slag materials that are metallurgical industry wastes. Experience of ferrous metallurgy slag usage has been accumulated in the road industry of Ukraine. Their usage makes it possible to extend the construction season, increases the strength and reliability of road structures due to their physical and mechanical properties, significantly reduces the road pavement energy consumption, simplifying the technology of works and the estimated cost of road construction. It was determined that the layers of pavement made from blast furnace slag have a high bearing capacity. Slag structures in 5–10 years of hardening are not inferior to, and in 10–20 years surpass cement structures on durability and deformation resistance. However, there is an urgent need to provide strength and open road traffic on the already built road section in a shortest possible term, so there is a need to accelerate the activation of the slow-setting binder. Therefore water glass (water solution of sodium silicate) is used.Purpose. The purpose of the work is to study the feasibility of using the soils and recycled industry products treated with water glass in the road pavement base courses.Materials and methods. Experimental tests of soils and blast furnace slags treated with water glass with different content of water solution of sodium silicate were performed.Results. The feasibility of using the asphalt concrete mixtures on the basis of soils and recycled products of industry treated with water glass in the pavement base courses is determined. Recommendations regarding technological parameters of preparation, transportation, laying and compaction of such mixes are given.Conclusions. Performed studies have shown that the physical and mechanical parameters of soils and blast furnace slags treated with water glass meet the requirements of current regulations of Ukraine. The advantages of use are noted, namely: the possibility of replacement of traditional stone materials by the local materials and recycled products of industry, reducing the transport component in the cost of construction. The obtained results indicate the feasibility of using the soils and recycled products of industry treated with water glass in the road construction. Keywords: soils, recycled products of industry, graded blast furnace slag, water solution of sodium silicate, water glass

The paper provides a quantitative assessment of the deflected mode of foundation stratum of finite width foundation, in the compressible thickness of which there is a slack clay soil layer. A number of criteria for assessing the possibility or impossibility of extruding a slack layer depending on its strength and rheological properties, as well as the relative thickness of the layer to its length (h/l) and the relative depth of the layer (h/d) have been given. Closed analytical solutions are given to determine the rate of Foundation precipitation depending on the rate of extrusion of the weak layer, including taking into account the damped and undamped creep. The analytical solutions in the article are supported by the graphical part made with the help of the Mathcad program. Plots of changes in shear stresses in the layer along the x axis at different distances from the axis and at different values 0, contours of horizontal displacement velocities in the weak layer at different distances from the x axis, plots of horizontal displacement velocities in the middle of the weak layer and plots of horizontal displacement velocities in the weak layer at different distances from the x axis are given. As a calculation model for describing the creep of a slack layer, rheological ones of the soil using power and hyperbolic functions and their modifications have been considered. In addition, most modern rheological models that take into account soil hardening during creep have been considered. Based on these models, the problem is solved by means analytical and numerical methods using the Mathcad PC and the PLAXIS PC according to the Soft Soil Creep model. The graphical part shows the isofields of horizontal displacements for 300 days and 600 days and the corresponding contours of horizontal displacements.

Seeking to reduce a negative impact of unfavourable weather conditions on road traffic, many countries introduce modern technologies allowing to objectively assessing meteorological conditions of roads. The world over, data from the automated meteorological stations of Road Weather Information System have been long ago used on a significantly larger scale than only for the organization of road maintenance works. International experience of introducing Road Traffic Information Systems in European Union and other countries of the world shows that Road Weather Information Systems give good results for increasing road safety, improving the level of road user information and solving the road construction issues. Road Weather Information System is a system of technologies and decision-making using historical and real-time data of roads and weather conditions. The collected and processed multi-year data from meteorological stations is a great assistance in designing or reconstructing road pavement structures. Road pavement structure is highly affected by a negative air temperature and frozen ground. The impact of negative temperature is expressed by the thickness of frost blanket course. The thickness of frost blanket course depends on a frost susceptibility of soil. To determine the thickness of frost blanket course it is necessary to assess the frost impact, therefore it was up to the purpose − climatic distribution of regions the territory of Lithuania according to the distribution of frost impact and the depth of frozen ground. Based on climatic maps compiled, a correction of the thickness of road pavement structure was suggested.
