The article also presents the results of experimental studies of the effect of oxidation with atmospheric oxygen, an increase in the process temperature on the plasticity of bitumen. The efficiency of bitumen oxidation depends on the size of the contact surface between the liquid and gas phases. Acceleration of the oxidation process is achieved 6-7 times with good mixing of the reacting phases. The article is devoted to the analysis and study of various methods of obtaining petroleum bitumen and improving the adhesion properties in various mineral materials. Using the example of the Astrakhan gas processing plant, the effectiveness of the addition of additives - nitrogen-, sulfur-containing substances, elemental sulfur, etc. - to improve the adhesion properties of bitumen to mineral materials is shown. The analysis of the effect of temperature differences in summer and winter on the binding properties of bitumen is carried out. A method for preliminary stripping of volatile components from oils is considered, which leads to a decrease in the content of paraffin-naphthenic hydrocarbons and an improvement in the quality of the obtained bitumen.

The effect of active compounds (ACs), allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) and carvacrol (CARV), as natural additives on the quality of fresh chicken meat was evaluated. The meat was treated with 500 and 1000 ppm of ACs, vacuum packaged and stored at 4°C up to 8 days. Physicochemical characteristics, lipid oxidation, microbiological status, sensorial electronic-nose based properties were examined. AITC, particularly 1000 ppm, showed greater activity than CARV and resulted in colour changes, accumulative odour production, triggered reduction in the growth of Pseudomonas lundensis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus and 3 log10 CFU/g reduction in aerobic mesophilic counts. However, CARV was more active in increasing chroma properties and reducing the growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium. Concomitantly, 500 ppm CARV showed greater activity than AITC in controlling lipid oxidation and protecting the colour changes. Therefore, both AITC and CARV possess great potential to extend the shelf life of meat and meat products.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence a finishing diet containing natural additives fed for 94 days on animal performance, carcass, and meat quality characteristics of crossbred bulls (1/2 Angus × 1/2 Nellore). Forty-eight bulls (initial BW 318 ± 4.7 kg and initial age 22 months) were used in a completely randomised design. Bulls were fed one of four diets: (1) CON – Control; (2) CCO – addition of 4 g/animal.day of a mix of essential oils from castor bean and cashew; (3) MIX – addition of 4 g/animal.day of a mix of essential oils (oregano oils, castor bean, cashew); (4) YST – addition of 4 g/animal.day of yeast. Bulls were finished in feedlot (in individual pens) and slaughtered at an average weight of 469 ± 6.7 kg. Final BW, hot carcass weight and average daily gain were greater (P < 0.05) in MIX diet than in the three other diets. However, DM intake, G : F, fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, marbling, and meat colour were similar (P > 0.05) among the four diets. The carcass conformation score was higher (P < 0.05) for bulls that were fed with the YST diet and similar for the three other diets. Meat from CCO had a reduced (P < 0.05) cooking loss when compared with CON diet. Shear force from MIX diet had lesser values (P < 0.05) than meat from YST diet, and it was similar among CON and CCO diets. There was no diet effect (P > 0.05) on lipid oxidation, moisture, ash, and total lipids contents. C14:0, C14:1 n-9, C16:0, C18:1 n-9, C18:1 n-7 and C18:3 n-6 fatty acids in intramuscular fat from the longissimus muscle were affected by the inclusion of additives in the diets. SFA, MUFA, PUFA, n-3 and n-6 fatty acid percentages, and the ratios PUFA : SFA and n-6 : n-3 were similar (P > 0.05) among diets. In conclusion, adding a mix of oregano, castor bean, and cashew oils in the diet improved the performance of the bulls, but meat characteristics did not significantly change.

The most urgent in the oil refining industry, along with the deepening of oil refining, are the problems of improving the quality of oil products, which include heavy oil residues, such as bitumen. Despite the widespread use of petroleum bitumen in road construction, the demand for bitumen is not fully satisfied, because the quality of many bituminous materials does not fully meet the modern requirements of the construction industry.Conformance of bitumen obtained by synthetic method for using it in road construction was reviewed in this article. Some main physical and chemical properties of bitumen were described. Received results meet with specification and we can make the conclusion that synthesized bitumen can be used for road surface.

Abstract Combining natural additives with specific and selected neuro-sensory molecules is a possible solution to manage stress in feedlot beef cattle. The objective of this study was to assess the use of a neuro-sensory additive (VeO) on meat quality of finishing feedlot beef cattle. This study was conducted from May to August in the Premix Research Center, Patrocínio Paulista, Brazil. VeO is based on a specific extract from Rutacea family. 80 Nellore bulls were randomly assigned to a control group (C) and a treated group (V) with 40 animals in each (10 per pen). Both groups received the same total mixed ration supplemented with Fator P (Premix, Brazil) with the addition of VeO as the only difference for 100 days up to slaughter. 160 cuttings in Longissimus muscle were sampled from C carcasses and V carcasses (n = 20) and packed in PVC blister packs 48h post-mortem. Analyzed variables were red color (a*), yellow color (b*) and drip losses (%) at packing then 3 days, 5 days and 7 days after. Statistical analysis was performed through mixed procedure of SAS software. Interactions between treatment and time was observed for values a* (P = 0.003) and b* (P = 0.056) and drip losses as well (P = 0.03). Globally meat from animals fed VeO presented more stable red and yellow colors. From day 5, it presented more intense red and yellow colors in comparison to meat from control animals. At day 7 drip losses were reduced with treatment (V: 8.7% vs. C: 11.4%, P = 0.012). Results showed that the use of the neuro-sensory additive during finishing of feedlot beef cattle improved appearance of meat after slaughter, leading to possible extended shelf life.

Liquid wood is one of the newly discovered green polymer materials, being a biodegradable and recyclable thermoplastic, made from cellulose, lignin and natural additives, currently used in commerce as ARBOFIL, ARBOROM and ARBOBLEND. The applications of this material (aeronautics, automotive, construction, consumer goods etc.) are limited by two major drawbacks: higher weight compared to ordinary plastic materials and low melting point (≈ 175° C). In this work was studied the possibility of changing some mechanical and thermal properties of this material by applying superficial coatings. For this process were prepared specimens from two types of material: ARBOBLEND and ARBOFIL. The resulted samples were analyzed in terms of microstructural changes both longitudinally (in order to evaluate the quality of the deposited layer) and on cross section (in order to evaluate the changes produced at the interface substrate - coating). For this purpose were used the QUANTA 200 3D (FEI, Holland, 2009) scanning electron microscope and the X`PERT PROMD diffractometer (Panalitycal, Holland, 2009). Using the UMTR 2M-CTR Micro-tribometer were evaluated the elasticity modulus of the coatings through microindentation and its adhesion to the substrate through scratch method, applied both longitudinally and on cross section.
