Purpose The purpose of this paper aims to investigate micro enterprises financing in Indonesia and examines how this financing differs, depending on the enterprise’s development stage. This research also identifies some structural problems related to micro-financing and provides workable solutions. Design/methodology/approach This research uses the entrepreneurial network model of Schutjens and Stam (2003) to examine how Indonesian micro and small enterprises (MSEs) evolve even before they become regular small businesses. Content analysis is used on 10 micro-enterprises from Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia and its surroundings. Financing issues at each stage of enterprise development are identified and deeply examined. Findings This research not only confirms the significant financing problems micro-enterprises face but also clarifies that these problems are unique to each stage of the MSEs’ development. One insight is that most micro-enterprises do not use funding from formal institutions. That is, business owners rely more on funding from non-formal institutions. This is because these enterprises’ managers generally cannot prepare loans application and/or they are lack of knowledge/training on financing matters. They hesitate to borrow from formal financial institutions, as the rates are high but the processing time is longer than those of the loan sharks. Originality/value This research contributes to the field of entrepreneurial finance by identifying the structural problems inherent in micro-finance and providing workable solutions for overcoming these problems.

echnological innovation grows by leaps and bounds, becoming a key element in the development of any activity in society today. At the business level, the proper use of technological tools provides a clear competitive advantage over establishments that do not have them, or, failing that, over small businesses that are unable to optimize their use. From the above, the objective of this research is to determine the critical success factors that influence the level of implementation of information technologies within micro and small enterprises in the northeastern region of Mexico. For this reason, a questionnaire was applied to 128 owners and managers, using factor analysis with SPSS version 24 as a statistical analysis tool. The results show that there are seven factors that influence the implementation of technology, among them: i) favorable internal relations, ii) adoption, iii) decision making and iv) cost.

Cassava is the most processed staple food crops in Indonesia. Processed cassava micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are responsible for most cassava value-adding process. The major obstacle to the growth of MSEs is financing—a problem of the limited source of fund. Despite the presence of government financing support to MSEs, the number of processed cassava MSEs that have involved financing is still low. This study aimed to analyze the financing impact on the performance of processed cassava MSEs and to identify which factors influence the performance of processed cassava MSEs. Cross-sectional data of the MSEs Survey conducted in 2015 by Badan Pusat Statistik and analysis tool Multiple Linear Regression was used to answer the research objectives. Results showed that financing had a positive and significant impact on processed cassava MSEs’ sales revenue, but did not have any impact on their assets. Factors that significantly affected the performance of processed cassava MSEs were working hours per day, input value, training, products marketed in town, and business belongs in chips industry.

This paper will consider the rationale and effectiveness of SMEsupport policies in the award of public procurement (PP) contracts. One group of economic justifications for SME policies derives from the notion that awarding PP contracts to SMEs (and micro-enterprises) encourages innovation, entrepreneurship and so contributes to job creation, economic growth and can support local and regional developments to the benefit of wider society. The link between SMEs, innovation and economic growth has often been assumed in PP policy-making. While some studies show higher growth rates in small than larger firms, others indicate, to the contrary, that many micro and small enterprises, and particularly informal businesses, are not actively seeking to grow. This paper will assess how effective SME policies may be, and questions the extent to which they are properly evaluated.

The objective of this study is to provide an overview and to discuss the recent Brazilian experience in formulating and implementing policies for promoting Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), especially considering the initiatives that depart from a systemic approach to promote production and innovation. The chapter emphasizes some crucial issues in the discussion of industrial and innovation policy, such as the adequacy of the instruments, the institutional set-up and the effective and potential convergence of different types of policies to support MSEs under the header of Local Innovation and Production Systems (LIPS). Data on the performance of MSEs in general and those inserted in LIPSs in the recent period suggest that the diversified set of initiatives had a considerably positive impact, especially in relation to formalization, access to credit, and incremental improvements and innovations. On the other side, the articulation of actors for enhancing interactive learning processes and technical training deserve more attention. Positive prospects for the promotion of MSEs, based on a systemic approach, are related to LIPS policies that articulate main policy vectors: science, technology and innovation, industry, and regional and social development.
