The objective of this study is to determine the morphological characteristics of flowers and pollen, preliminary phytochemical evaluation and thin layer chromatography of five species of genus Balanophora J.R. & G. Forst collected in Viet Nam: Balanophora fungosa J.R. & G. Forst ssp. indica (Arn.) Hansen var. indica, Balanophora fungosa J.R. & G. Forst ssp. indica (Arn.) Hansen var. globosa (Jungh.) Hansen, Balanophora latisepala (Tiegh) Lecome, Balanophora laxiflora Hemsl, Balanophora subcupularis P.C. Tam. The morphological characteristics of male flowers, female flowers and spadicles, pollen grain of five species were described. Results of preliminary phytochemical evaluation of ethanol extracts of five species showed that all of five species have tannins, flavonoids, coumarins, sterols. Thin layer chromatography of ethanol extracts of five species were developed and base on TLC chromatogram, it is easy to differentiate these species.

Plants are a rich source of effective non-toxic biologically active substances. Various physicochemical methods of analysis are used for evaluation of plant antioxidant activity. Composition of ethanol extracts of red, yellow and white onion husks, dried rosemary, basil, and chaga were studied by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) method. The antioxidant activity of the obtained fractions on a chromatographic plate was assessed by subsequent DPPH screening. The extracts red and yellow onion husk and rosemary demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity, variability of the qualitative composition and similarity of antioxidant profiles, while extract of white onion husks did not contain any antioxidant classes. Intensive spots with Rf of 0.13-0.97 were observed along the whole chromatogram track corresponding to red onion husks. It was also found that all tested extract, excepting white onion husk and chaga, contained spots with varying degrees of intensity in the Rf range of 0.96-0.98, which corresponded quercetin Rf value.

Most of the traditional medicinal plants in India are not scientifically validated. Scientific evaluation along with traditional knowledge is essential to obtain effective drugs for commercial purpose. The present study was aimed at High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) analysis of ethanol extracts of leaf, stem and root of Croton klotzschianus. The chemical fingerprint through HPTLC Studies was carried out as per the standard method. The HPTLC shows ethanolic extracts of Croton klotzschianus at UV short and long wavelength 254 and 366 using Hexane: Ethyl acetate: Toluene: Chloroform: Methanol: Formic acid (4:2.5:1.5:0.8:1:0.2) as mobile phase and the Rf values were recorded. The HPTLC fingerprint profile of leaf, stem and root extracts was exhibits 12 peaks each. The results of qualitative phytochemical screening confirm the presence of flavonoids. The HPTLC analysis to help in proper identification and quantification of marker compounds.

A detailed chemical and morphological study has been carried out on West European specimens of Cladonia subulata (L.) F. H. Wigg. and C. rei Schaer. Using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), three different chemotypes were found, which did not show any correlation with distribution, substratum, habitat or any of the morphological characteristics mentioned in recent floras. Moreover, the application of UV (long-wave) proved to be unreliable for detecting homosekikaic acid and thus for distinguishing the two species. It appears that only one species, with three chemotypes, exists in Western Europe. Cladonia subulata is therefore another of the more than ten Cladonia species reported so far that can contain either homosekikaic and/or fumarprotocetraric acid.

Production of mycotoxins by Chaetomium spp. and related fungi on rice culture was examined by a combination of cytotoxicity tests using HeLa cells and thin-layer chromatography. Three species, C. mollipilium, C. rectum, and C. subuffine, as well as C. cochliodes and C. globosum, were proved to produce chaetoglobosins. From cultures of four strains of Chaetomium sp., assigned to C. thielavioideum, and one strain of Farrowia sp., chaetocin, sterigmatocystin, and O-methylsterigmatocystin were isolated. Morphological characteristics of the producers of sterigmatocystins are described.

ABSTRACTObjective: To identify the flavonoids high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) profiles from barks of Sapindus emarginatus Vahl.(Sapindaceae) and Morinda pubescens J.E.Sm. (Rubiaceae) by ethanol extracts. Methods: The barks of S. emarginatus Vahl. and M. pubescens J.E.Sm. extracted each separately with ethanol. Both these ethanol extracts weresubjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis. Based on phytochemical studies, the extracts obtained were subjected to HPTLC profiles for identifyand confirmation flavonoids, both these samples were compared with standard (Rutin). HPTLC analysis performed with silica gel G 60 F254 plateswith mobile phase ethyl acetate:n-butanol:formic acid:water (5:3:1:1). Detection of flavonoid compound was performed by scanning the developedplate at 254 nm.Results: Result of these both extracts shows positive tests for flavonoids. Ethanol extracts barks of S. emarginatus Vahl. and M. pubescens J.E.Sm eachwere showed bands of different Rf values with range 0.50-0.90 and standard showed bands of 0.50 Rf values. Conclusion: It can be concluded that rutin constituents of each bark extract are presents and have effective components which can be utilized as auseful herb for alleviation of various illness and disorders. Keywords: Sapindus emarginatus Vahl., Morinda pubescens J.E.Sm. This study isolated and identified the antimicrobial compounds of PhilippinePiper betleL. leaf ethanol extracts by thin layer chromatography- (TLC-) bioautography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Initially, TLC separation of the leaf ethanol extracts provided a maximum of eight compounds withRfvalues of 0.92, 0.86, 0.76, 0.53, 0.40, 0.25, 0.13, and 0.013, best visualized when inspected under UV 366 nm. Agar-overlay bioautography of the isolated compounds demonstrated two spots withRfvalues of 0.86 and 0.13 showing inhibitory activities against two Gram-positive multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, namely, methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureusand vancomycin-resistantEnterococcus. The compound with anRfvalue of 0.86 also possessed inhibitory activity against Gram-negative MDR bacteria, namely, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae-Klebsiella pneumoniaeand metallo-β-lactamase-producingAcinetobacter baumannii. GC-MS was performed to identify the semivolatile and volatile compounds present in the leaf ethanol extracts. Six compounds were identified, four of which are new compounds that have not been mentioned in the medical literature. The chemical compounds isolated include ethyl diazoacetate, tris(trifluoromethyl)phosphine, heptafluorobutyrate, 3-fluoro-2-propynenitrite, 4-(2-propenyl)phenol, and eugenol. The results of this study could lead to the development of novel therapeutic agents capable of dealing with specific diseases that either have weakened reaction or are currently not responsive to existing drugs.
