Background: Nymphaea lotus Linn. (Nymphaeaceae), commonly known as white water-lily, white lotus or Egyptian lotus, is an important and well-known medicinal plant, widely used in the Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine for the treatment of diabetes, inflammation, liver disorders, urinary disorders, fever, skin diseases, cancer, gonorrhoea, pain and bronchitis. Objective: The study was designed to explore anti-nociceptive potential of aqueous extract of Nymphaea lotus leaf, its possible mechanism of action, and antioxidant properties. Methods: The anti-nociceptive activity of Nymphaea lotus (50, 100 and 250 mg/kg) was explored using writhing, formalin, tail clip and hot plate tests, while formalin test was used to investigate the involvement of opioid, dopamine, serotonin, K+ channel blocker, α1-adrenergic and α2- adrenergic systems. The antioxidant effect was carried out using DPPH, nitric oxide free radical scavenging activity and the reducing power effect. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents were also explored. Results: Oral administration of N. lotus in doses of 50, 100 and 250 mg/kg recorded a significant (p<0.05) dose dependent obstruction of nociception. A remarkable effect was recorded with the writhing and formalin tests and a significant effect was also observed in the tail clip and hot plate test, which suggests peripheral and central anti-nociceptive activity of the extract. The anti-nociceptive effect produced by N. lotus was significantly reversed by naloxone and yohimbine, suggesting the possible involvement of opioid and α2–adrenergic systems in its anti-nociceptive activity. N. lotus also displayed a potent antioxidant activity. Conclusion: These findings justify the folkloric use of N. lotus in pain management.

Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity of methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts of aerial parts of Lamium purpureum L. was determined by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and TRP assays. Contents of flavonoids and phenols were also investigated. The total phenolic content in the extracts, determined using Folin?Ciocalteu assay, ranged between 8.57 to 128.00 mg GAE/g d.e. while concentrations of flavonoids in the extracts varied from 24.20 to 39.80 mg QuE/g d.e. The highest phenolic content was found in methanol extract (128.00 mg GAE/g d.e.). The highest content of total flavonoids was identified in the methanol extract (39.80 mg QuE/g d.e.) and the lowest was in the chloroform (24.30 mg QuE/g d.e.). DPPH scavenging of the extracts was determined and obtained IC50 values ranged from 0.12 to 3.12 mg/mL of solution. The values of ABTS radical scavenging activity ranged from 0.35 to 1.80 mg AA/g. The highest ABTS antiradical activity was registered for methanol extract. The FRAP value was found within the range 0.08 to 1.04 ?mol Fe/mg. The best radical scavenger was methanol (1.04 ?mol Fe/mg). In reducing power assay different extracts of L. purpureum showed increasing of activity with increased concentration, and all extracts possessed substantial dose dependent antioxidant activity. The best reducing capacity was obtained with methanol extract of L. purpureum (0.0132 mg AA/mL). The results in this study confirmed that L. purpureum possesses moderate antioxidant properties.

A comparative study of antioxidant properties on two varieties of Phyllanthus (Phyllanthus niruiri L. & Phyllanthus urinaria L. leaves) growing in Bangladesh was done in the present study. Five complimentary test methods namely DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents determination were used for the evaluation of antioxidant properties of two species of Phyllanthus. In the present investigation for the evaluation of antioxidant activities the concentration is expressed by the ratio of crude sample per solvent volume instead of extract weight per solvent volume. Based on these concentrations the investigated P. niruri L. and P. urinaria L. leaves extracts exhibited significant results. At 2 mg/ml concentration DPPH radical scavenging capacity of the methanol extract of both the plants was found to show significant (>90%) activity which is comparable to Ascorbic acid and BHA. In case of reducing power tests for both the extract, the activity of P. urinaria is comparable to that of BHA and AA and that of P. niruiri is comparable to BHA. P. niruiri showed better antioxidant potential than that of P. urinaria based on the observed results of their corresponding methanol extract. In this study, the effects of different fruit parts and extraction conditions on the antioxidant properties of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit were investigated. Five in vitro antioxidant models and statistical analyses were performed. The results revealed that jujube peel with pulp (peel pulp) exhibited better antioxidant capacity than did seeds. Overall, jujube peel pulp extracted using 50% ethanol at 60 °C exhibited the best antioxidant capacity in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (0.3 ± 0 mg/mL), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity (0.5 ± 0 mg/mL), total phenolic content (38.3 ± 0.4 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram dry weight), total flavonoid content (43.8 ± 0.2 mg quercetin equivalent per gram dry weight), and reducing power (41.9 ± 2.2 mg ascorbic acid equivalent per gram dry weight). The results indicated that jujube peel pulp is a more potential natural antioxidant than seeds.

Abstract Maltese honey has been valued for its medicinal properties since ancient times, so much so that the word Malta is derived from the ancient Greek word, Melite, which means honey. In this study, Maltese honey samples (n = 30) from three harvest seasons and different floral sources were analysed to determine their antioxidant/antiradical properties. Colorimetric assays were used to determine the polyphenol content, flavonoid content, and colour intensity, and these values were analysed to determine whether they correlated with radical scavenging activity as determined by bioassays. The honey samples varied in their DPPH activity (range, 3.326 - 11.865 mg AEAC/100 g honey), reducing power (EC 50 range: 5.632 - 14.453 mg/ml), total phenolic content (range, 8.114 - 109.765 mg TAE/100 g honey), total flavonoids (range, 0.655 - 212.865 mg RE/100 g honey), and colour intensity (range, 0.000 - 99.581 mm Pfund). The data were subjected to factor analysis using principal components. The antioxidant properties correlated significantly with total polyphenol content and colour (p<0.0001). Principal components analysis revealed three clusters of honey corresponding to the three harvest seasons.

AbstractRheum species are important medicinal herbs, often used in pharmacological research, due to the presence of anthracene derivatives in the subterranean parts of the plant. In this study, we intended to assess its antioxidant capacity, in correlation with the method of extraction. For this purpose, Rheum ribes extraction was realized with four solvents of different polarities (50% methanol, 70% ethanol, 80% acetonitrile, and petroleum ether). We used different extraction techniques, such as orbital shaker, ultrasonic stirrer, microwave, and Soxhlet extraction, and the total phenolic content of the Rheum ribes extracts was determined by modified Folin–Ciocalteu method. The reducing power and radical scavenging activity of the extracts were also evaluated. The results shown that the antioxidant activity of the extracts depends on the extraction methods especially through the used solvent and decreases in the order: ethanol > methanol > acetonitrile > petroleum ether.

Methanolic extracts (MEs) of seven brown seaweeds occurring in the Indian coastal waters were screened for their cytotoxic and antioxidant properties following various assays. The methanolic extracts of seaweeds in the order ofDictyopteris australis > Spatoglossum variabile > Stoechospermum marginatum > Spatoglossum aspermumshowed significant cytotoxic activity. A very high DPPH radical scavenging activity was exhibited by the methanolic extracts prepared fromSt. marginatum, Padina tetrastromatica, Dictyopteris delicatulaandS. aspermum. The total phenolic content of the MEs varied from 13.19 ± 0.32 to 25.29 ± 0.445 gallic acid equivalents (mg g−1of methanolic extract). The reducing power assay indicated a dose dependency, at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 and 2.0 mg mL−1of MEs and decreased in the following order:Butylated hydroxy toluene > P. tetrastromatica > D. delicatula > S. aspermum > S. variabile > S. marginatum > D. australis > S. marginatum. Furthermore,D. australis,S. aspermum, S. variabileandS. marginatumdemonstrated good metal ion chelating properties. All the above evidences suggest that, the antioxidant compounds found in brown seaweeds scavenge free radicals through effective intervention. This decisively promotes them as a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Crude extracts from a medicinal Tunisian plant,Pergularia tomentosaL., were the investigated natural material. Butanolic extract of roots analyzed with IR spectra revealed the presence of hydroxyl, alcoholic, and carboxylic groups and sugars units. Analysis of some secondary metabolites, total phenolic, flavonoids, flavonols, and procyanidins, was performed using different solvents following the increased gradient of polarity. Fruits and leaves contained the highest amounts of all these compounds. Antioxidant properties were evaluated by the determination of free radical scavenging activity and the reducing power of methanolic extracts. Fruits and leaf extracts were the most powerful antioxidants for the two-assay in vitro system. Stems and fruits extracts exhibit an antifungal activity againstFusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersiciwhich could become an alternative to synthetic fungicide to controlSolanumspecies fungal diseases.

The present work reveals, for the first time, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of propolis samples collected from different regions of Palestine. The content on bioactive compounds has been estimated by total phenolic and flavone and flavonol content, while their antioxidant activity has been determined by radical scavenging methods of 1,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical (ABTS), and ferric reducing power assay (FRAP). The disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods were carried out to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Palestinian propolis against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus faecalis. The results showed that the total phenolic content ranged from 9.62 mg to 124.94 mg gallic acid equivalent GAE/g of propolis, and the flavone and flavonol content ranged from 1.06 to 75.31 mg quercetin equivalent QE/g of propolis. The samples S6 from Al-Khalil presented the strongest radical scavenging activity toward DPPH, ABTS free radicals, and FRAP assay with IC50 values of 0.02, 0.03, and 0.05 mg/mL, respectively. The results of antibacterial activity indicated that the propolis samples inhibit the growth of Gram-positive strains better than Gram-negative ones. In addition, a strong correlation was observed between the pH, resin, balsam, total phenolic, flavones and flavonol, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) from one side and the antibacterial activity of propolis samples except on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In this study, it was investigated the total amounts of phenolic and flavonoid substances and antioxidant activities in different solvent extracts of Lonicera iberica M. Bieb. wild fruit. Total phenolic contents of the extracts were determined as equivalent to gallic acid using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, and total flavonoid contents as equivalent to quercetin by aluminium nitrate method. In addition, the antioxidant properties of the extracts were determined using free radical scavenging (DPPH) and reducing power (FRAP) methods. The amount of total phenolic substance of L. iberica fruits in hexane and methanol extracts was calculated as 30.96 ± 0.67 mg of GAE / g and 23.70 ± 1.56 mg of GAE / g, respectively. In addition, the amount of total flavonoid substance was calculated as 46.50 ± 8.54 mg of QE / g and 42.09 ± 2.58 mg of QE / g, respectively. It was determined that DPPH radical scavenging activity correlated with total phenolic and flavonoid amount of substance, and L. iberica had a strong antioxidant effect. It is predicted that our study will shed light on new researches, since it is the first study done with L. Iberica fruits in this field.

ABSTRACTObjectives: To analyze the phytochemicals quantitatively and screening the antioxidant efficacy of methanol extracts of Elytraria acaulis plant extractby in vitro.Methods: The total phenols, flavonoids, and tannin contents analyzed by Folin-Ciocalteu method, aluminum chloride colorimetric and calculated asgallic acid equivalents/g (GAE/g) of dry weight. Free radical scavenging activity was screened using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), radicalscavenging activities, and ferric reducing power assay was also analyzed.Results: The total phenolic content of the aqueous leaf extract was 46.84 µg GAE/g of extract powder. Significantly similar levels of total flavonoid andtannin contents of the plant were 41.72 and 39.50 µg GAE/g, respectively. The plant extracts showed appreciable free radical scavenging activities atthe highest concentration of 400 µg/mL superoxide anion radical with IC values (107.7±1.081 µg/mL), and for DPPH and considerably high amountof radical scavenging activity was found with very low IC5050 values (4.3±0.88 µg/mL) compared with quercetin.Conclusion: The phenolic and flavonoid compounds provide substantial antioxidant properties which could be effectively used for pharmaceutical,nutraceutical as well as anti-inflammatory applications.Keywords: Phenols, Flavonoids, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, Pharmaceuticals.
