An experiment on eco-friendly approach of managing pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) was carried out at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS), Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal from April to July, 2007. The experiment consisted of fourteen treatments laid out in two factors Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Among them, storage structure (aluminium sheet bin and jute bag with plastic lining) was considered as one factor and pesticidal materials (Xanthoxylum armatum DC fruit dust@ 30gm kg-1; Acorus calamus L. rhizome dust@ 30 gm kg-1; Cinnamom camphora balls@ 1.5 gm kg-1; Sesamum indicum L. oil@ 5 ml kg-1; Azadirachta indica A. Juss. leaf dust@30gm kg-1; malathion dust@ 1gm kg-1 and control) was as another factor. Among six pesticidal materials tested, mortality of adult bruchids was obtained significantly higher in chickpea treated by C. camphora balls (25.17) followed by A. calamus rizome dust (24.83) and Sesamum oil (24.50). Grain damage and weight loss was nil in chickpea treated by these three materials. Among botanicals used, X. armatum fruit dust and A. indica leaf dust were found ineffective to cause adult mortality (20.33 and 19.67) and adult emergence (1549 and 2292) in chickpea. Malathion, initially was found somewhat effective in adult mortality (21.67) and adult emergence (30.33). However, it was less effective from F2 generation resulting maximum adult emergence (2127). While comparing two storage structures, jute bag with plastic lining was better in terms of maintaining lower moisture (14.64%), higher germination (65.14%) and lesser grain damage (39.95%). Thus, the jute bag with plastic lining was found as a better storage structure and botanical materials such as A. calamus rhizome dust, Sesamum oil and C. camphora balls have been found as effective safe alternatives for the management of C. chinensis L. in the storage of chickpea. The pesticidal efficacy of four locally available leaves of botanicals like neem (Azadirachta indica), datura (Datura stramonium),  marigold (Tagetes erecta) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) tablet powders was assessed on pulse bettle (Callosobruchus chinensis L) through adult mortality and emergence, oviposition performance, seed damage, weight loss and germination  of chickpea (Cicer arietinum). The above test biopesticides were tested at three different rates (0.5 g, 1.0 g and 1.50 g powder/kg of chickpea seeds). All the tested powder showed significant effect on the above parameters. The highest adult mortality was recorded when chickpea seeds were treated with datura leaf powder at 1.50 g/kg, whereas marigold showed the least effect on adult mortality. The powders used in the experiment effectively controlled oviposition and adult emergence of pulse beetle. The lowest number of adult emergence was obtained from chickpea seeds treated with datura leaf powder at 1.50 g/kg. The highest weight loss was observed in control seeds followed by marigold leaf powder 0.5 g/kg gram seeds. Datura leaf powder treated seeds showed the lowest seed weight loss followed by neem, garlic and marigold. Plant powders had profound effect on seed germination. The highest germination was observed in treated seed with datura leaf powder at 1.50 g/kg and the lowest germination in control seed followed by marigold leaf powder at 1.5 g/kg treated seeds. The pesticidal effect on oviposition, adult mortality, adult emergence, and seed weight loss was directly proportional to leaf powder rates.

The n-hexane extracts of the weeds ‘bhatpata’ Clerodendrum viscosum, ‘kashiature’ Cassia tora, ‘dhakishak’ Dryoptris filix-max, ‘bonmorich’ Croton bonpalandianum and ‘ghagra’ Xanthium strumarium were used to evaluate their effectiveness for suppressing pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis reared on mung bean Vigna radiata grains. The investigations were done with 1, 2 and 4% n-hexane extracts of the weeds and an untreated control. The weed extracts exhibited considerable effectiveness which varied with weed species, concentrations and exposure durations. The higher concentrations showed the higher rate of insect mortality, fecundity, adult emergence inhibition, and grain protection. The LC50 values of the extracts ranged from 5.3 to 7.8, 4.7 to 6.5 and 4.1 to 6.0 g/100 ml at 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment, respectively. The fecundity inhibition varied from 31.7 to 78.7%, adult emergence inhibition from 33.8 to 81.1%, and grain damage inhibition from 10.3 to 60.1% when ‘bhatpata’ with concentration of 1 g/100 ml and ‘ghagra’ with concentration of 4g/100 ml were applied, respectively. Among the tested weeds, ghagra (4g/100 ml) showed better efficacy against C. chinensis compared to other tested extracts and may be suggested to control pulse beetle and protection of mung bean grains.Bangladesh J. Results of the evaluation on bioefficacy of three indigenous plant extracts for toxicity and residual effects against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. (Bruchidae: Coleoptera) showed that the plant extracts had toxic and residual effects for controlling pulse beetle. Mortality and residual effects were statistically different among the plant extracts and doses applied. Neem extract showed the highest adult mortality (36.78%) whereas eucalyptus extract showed the lowest (22.75%). The order of the toxicity of three plant extracts was found as neem > custard apple > eucalyptus. Mortality was found directly proportional to the hour after treatments which increased with the progress of time. Between two solvents, acetone solvent possessed the highest toxicity (mortality 32.95%) but methanol showed the lowest toxicity (mortality 30.56%). The residual toxicity was evaluated on the basis of egg laid, adult emergence, seed infestation and weight loss caused by the insect. The highest residual toxicity was found in neem extract with acetone while the lowest in eucalyptus extract with acetone. Neem extract with acetone and custard apple extract with methanol solvent were found effective to toxic and residual effects against pulse beetle of three plant extracts applied. Asiat. Soc. Experiments were conducted to assess the protectant ability of cow dung ash (CDA) to cowpea seeds against Callosobruchus maculatus F. under laboratory conditions of 50-65% R.H and 28-32oC. The CDA at different rates of 0.625, 1.25, 2.50, 5.00, 10.00% (w/w) incorporated with cypermethrin powder at 0.625% were applied to 20 g of cowpea seeds in petri dishes. None of the ashes or cypermethrin was added to the control. Ten beetles were introduced into each of the petri dishes and covered with muslin cloth. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three times. Effects of the treatments on adult mortalities as well as median lethal dose (LD50) of CDA against C. maculatus were determined. Adult emergence and weight losses in seeds treated with CDA at different doses were assessed. Findings of the study revealed that the adult mortality of C. maculatus among different CDA treatments differed significantly (p < 0.05) and ranged from 13.33 to 100.00% 72 hours after treatment (HAT). Results of the study also showed that LD50 of CDA against C. maculatus at 24 hours after treatment (HAT) was 5.51 % (w/w). No adults emerged from the treated seeds and weight losses were observed in those treated with the lowest dose and the control only. Therefore, CDA could be utilized to protect cowpea seeds from C. maculatus infestations during storage.

<em>Sitophilus zeamais</em> Motschulsky infestation causes severe post-harvest losses of cereal grains in Nigeria leading to major nutritional and economic losses. A laboratory study was conducted to determine the efficacy of <em>Myrcianthes fragrans</em> and <em>Aframomum melegueta</em> seed powders and methanol extract as well as their synergetic effects on <em>S. zeamais</em>. The ability of the plant products to protect maize grain against <em>S. zeamais</em> infestation was assessed in terms of mortality 24 to 96 h posttreatment, oviposition, and adult emergence, weight loss and grains damage. <em>M. fragrans</em> and <em>A. melegueta</em> products significantly cause adult mortality of <em>S. zeamais</em>. <em>M. fragrans</em> products were the most toxic as it evoked 100% adult mortality within 24 h of application while<em> A. melegueta</em> products evoked 100% mortality of <em>S. zeamais</em> at 48 and 72 h post treatment, respectively. The synergetic effects of the plant products caused 100% adult mortality at 48 and 72 h post-treatment, respectively. Oviposition, adult emergence, weight loss and damage of the maize grains treated with the plant products were completely inhibited compared with untreated grains. The results obtained revealed that 2 g and 2% sole application of <em>M. fragrans</em> and mixed application of <em>M. fragrans</em> and <em>A. melegueta</em> products were effective in controlling <em>Sitophilus zeamais</em> post-harvest infestation and grain damage and could serve as an alternative to synthetic insecticide in ensuring steady supply of maize grains, thus ensuring food security as the plants are of medicinal and nutritional quality.

Powder and ash of Carica papaya seed extracted from riped and unriped C. papaya fruits obtained from Teaching and Research Farm of the Federal University of Technology, Akure were evaluated for their insecticidal potential against Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) at application rates of 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0g per 20g of cowpea seeds. The experiment was carried out at the pest management laboratory of the Department of Crop, Soil and Pest Management under ambient laboratory conditions of 27±20C temperature and 70±5% relative humidity. Each treatment was infested with 5 pairs of C. maculatus. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design with each treatment replicated three times. Mortality of cowpea beetles were assessed at 24, 48 and 72hours post treatment. Thereafter data were collected on oviposition, adult emergence, weevil perforation index and seed germination. The results obtained indicated that adult mortality of C. maculatus increased with increasing application rates of powders and ashes of ripe and unripe C. papaya seeds. 100% mortality was observed on cowpea seeds treated with powders and ashes of unripe C. papaya seed at 0.8 and 1.0g application rates at 72hours post treatment. Powders and ashes of unripe C. papaya seed significantly reduced the oviposition potential of adult C. maculatus and caused significant reduction of damaged seeds. Highest number of seeds that germinated was recorded on the seeds treated with powders and ashes of unripe C. papaya seed at 0.8 and 1.0g application rates.

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory of the Division of Entomology, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh to evaluate the efficacy of four indigenous plants parts such as leaves of raintree (Albizia saman), riot lata (Mikania micrantha), pithraj (Aphanamixis polystachya) and seeds of mahogani (Swietenia macrophylla) with methanol extracts at the rates of 10.0, 7.5, 5.0 and 2.5% for their direct toxicity against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.). The experiments were set up following Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that extracts of all the plant parts had very close efficacy in relation to direct toxicity effect and grain protection values. Pithraj leaf extract showed the highest mortality (96.66%) action and raintree leaf extract showed the lowest (80.33%) with 10% extract at 5 DAT. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory to assess the effectiveness of Nogos, Malathion, Sevin and Limper on lentil, gram, grasspea, greengram and blackgram seeds with eggs of pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. Insecticides were sprayed on the seeds along with eggs and found that all the tested insecticides inhibited hatching of eggs resulting in significantly lowest rate of adult emergence. Nogos and Malathion recorded the lower number of emergent adults. The overall 26.35- 100% reduction of seed damage and 40-100% weight losses were achieved in insecticides treated seeds of five different types of pulses showing highest reduction in seed damage and weight losses due to Nogos and Malathion treatments. The treatment of the pulse seeds with the insecticides did not affect the seed germination. Key words: Insecticides, pulse beetle, egg treatment, pulses, seed damage.

A total of 52 accessions of cowpea including two checks (Pusa Komal and Local variety) were screened for resistance to pulse beetle, <italic>Callosobruchus chinensis</italic> under no-choice artificial infestation conditions. There were significant differences among the accessions in terms of number of eggs laid, development period, adult emergence, number of emergence holes, weight loss and growth index of <italic>C. chinensis</italic> on cowpea. Based on growth indices, Pusa Komal (0.04081) and IC328859 (0.04112) were resistant while IC106033 (0.06819) and Local variety (0.06816) were most susceptible to <italic>C. chinensis</italic>. Of the 52 accessions screeened, 11 accessions were resistant, 15 moderately resistant, 13 moderately susceptible, 8 susceptible and 5 were highly susceptible to <italic>C. chinensis.</italic> Correlation between growth index and growth parameters of pulse beetle on different cowpea accessions indicated that growth index had significant negative relationship with mean development period (r = -0.68) and significant positive relationship with adult emergence(r = +0.80). Adult emergence had a positive relationship with weight loss (r = +0.22).

A total of 51 accessions of different Lens spp. viz., Lens culinaris (cultivated) and L. culinaris subsp. odemensis, L. culinaris subsp. orientalis, L. orientalis, L. nigricans, L. lamottei and L. ervoides (wild species) were screened for their reaction to Callosobruchus chinensis under no-choice artificial infestation conditions to find the sources of resistance. Significant differences among the accessions in terms of number of eggs laid, development period, adult emergence, number of emergence holes of C. chinensis loss in seed weight on different Lens spp. were observed. Of the seven species tested, L. culinaris was the most preferred one for egg laying while L. ervoides was the least preferred. Based on Growth Index (GI), accessions were categorised as highly resistant (15 accessions, GI = 0.00), resistant (14, GI=0.00 to 1.00), moderately resistant (16, GI=1.01 to 2.00) moderately susceptible (3, GI 2.01 to 3.00) susceptible (3, >3.01) to C. chinensis and the species have been arranged in the order of their resistance to C. chinensis. viz L. ervoides > L. lamottei > L. nigricans= L. orientalis > L. culinaris subsp. orientalis= L. culinaris subsp. odemensis > L. culnaris, i.e. L. ervoides was highly resistant and L. culnaris was the most susceptible. Correlation between GI and growth parameters of pulse beetle on different Lens spp. accessions indicated that GI had negative relationship with mean development period (-0.22) and significant positive relationship with adult emergence (+0.73), weight loss (+0.77) and eggs laid (+0.75).
