Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive aquatic weed causing serious threats to water ecosystems throughout the world. Recently, considerable attention has been given at harvesting the plant for practical uses. An experiment on the bioactivity of water hyacinth was conducted using the soxhlet extraction (hot method) and cold percolation method in chloroform and ethanol in order to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the plant. Plant samples were also analyzed for the presence of major pharmacologically active compounds. The antimicrobial assay was performed using well diffusion method against nine different clinical bacterial strains and six phytopathogenic fungal strains. The chloroform hot extract showed activity against 22.22% (Zone of Inhibition, ZOI < 13mm) bacteria and 66.66% (ZOI < 12mm) fungi; while the cold extract showed activity against 50% (ZOI < 13mm) fungi, but no activity against bacteria. Similarly, the ethanol hot extract showed activity against 77.77% (ZOI < 19mm) bacteria and 66.66% (ZOI < 20mm) fungi, while the cold extract showed activity against 77.77% (ZOI < 10mm) bacteria and 50% (ZOI < 14mm) fungi. The ethanolic hot and cold extract proved to be far better than the chloroform fraction showing more antibacterial activity, while they share the same value and possess same effectiveness against the different fungi. Chemical analysis indicated that the major components in these extracts were saponins, polyoses, alkaloid salts, and reducing compounds. Objective: The study was undertaken to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of polyherbal seed shells. Methods: The seed of Momordica charantia, Manikara zapota, Emblica officinalis, Syzygium cumini, collected from the local market, Mathikere, Bangalore, India. Ethanolic extract was prepared from the dried seed powders using solvent 80% ethanol. Initially, antimicrobial activity of the extract was performed by agar well diffusion method against two bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus) and two fungal pathogens (Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans). Results: The antimicrobial study results revealed that the test extract was strongly inhibited the growth of bacteria, whereas it was not inhibited the growth of fungal organisms used in this study. Conclusion: The results suggest that ethanolic extract of seeds possess antimicrobial properties which can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases.

This study aims to present a systematic data-driven bibliometric analysis of the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) infestation problem around the globe. As many solutions are being proposed in academia for its management, mitigation, and utilization, it requires investigation through a systematic scrutinizing lens. In this study, literature records from 1977 to June 2020 concerning research on water hyacinth are taken from Scopus for text analysis. Trends in the publication of different article types, dynamics of publication, clustering, correlation, and co-authoring patterns between different countries are observed. The cluster analysis indicated four clusters viz. (i) ecological works related to species, (ii) pollutant removal process and methods, (iii) utilization of biofuels for biogas production, and (iv) modelling works. It is clear from the networking analysis that most of the publications regarding water hyacinth are from India, followed by China and the United States. Sentiment analysis with the AFINN lexicon showed that the negative sentiment towards the aquatic weed has intensified over time. An exploratory analysis was performed using a bigram network plot, depicting and outlining different important domains of water hyacinth research. Water hyacinth research has passed the pioneering phase and is now at the end of a steady growth phase or at the beginning of an acceleration phase. In this article, an overview is given for the entirety of water hyacinth research, with an indication of future trends and possibilities.

A study was carried out to screen for phytochemical constituents and assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Senna alata and Senna tora leaf extracts. The leaves were first dried at room temperature and 50°C in an oven prior to solvent extraction using ethanol and methanol. The in-vitro qualitative assays showed that both S. alata and S. tora leaf extracts contained bioactive and secondary metabolites components such as tannins, steroids, saponin, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids and phenols. The antioxidant activity and capacity test were carried out by conducting free radical of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Ferric reduction antioxidant plasma (FRAP) assays. Both assays showed S. tora leaf extract has higher antioxidant capacity than S. alata leaf extract. The efficacy of these leaf extracts were tested against skin pathogens through agar well diffusion method. S. alata extract showed an inhibition zone (1.15 – 1.59 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa while S. tora extracts exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis (inhibition zone of 12 – 16.94 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (inhibition zone of 1 – 1.59 mm). Nonetheless, no inhibition zone was observed for S. aureus by both leaf extracts. The phytochemicals and antioxidant constituents as well as inhibitory potential on skin pathogens possessed by S. alata and S. tora leave highlighted their potential utilization in the development of natural drugs or cosmetics to treat skin related diseases or infections.

Water hyacinth is the world's worst water weed that is responsible for many environmental and economical problems. Nigerian fresh waters have been infested with this aquatic weed. In this work, a Natural Convection Mixed Mode Solar Dryer for drying water hyacinth to about 10% of its moisture content was constructed and tested as a component of controlling its infestation of the River Benue. The performance of the dryer was compared with the traditional open–air sun drying as the control for drying water hyacinth in Makurdi, Benue State Nigeria. The water hyacinth was dried for 8 hours each day for 4 days. 500g of water hyacinth on wet basis was dehydrated by about 437g on dry basis in 20 hours in the dryer while the control required 32 hours. The dryer was found to be technically more suitable for drying water hyacinth both in terms of the drying rate and quality of the dried product.

Medicinal plants have been the main focus of natural product research. However, recent research has revealed that lower plants including bryophytes are also a major resource of biologically active compounds with novel structures. Sri Lanka is considered as a biodiversity hotspot with a higher degree of endemism flora including bryophytes. In this study, different species of bryophytes were investigated for their antimicrobial and alpha-amylase inhibitory activities. The air-dried plant materials of 6 different bryophyte species, Marchantia sp., Fissidens sp., Plagiochila sp., Sematophyllum demissum, Hypnum cupressiforme, and Calymperes motley, were subjected to sequential cold extraction with 3 different organic solvents. All three types of organic crude extracts were subjected to screening of antimicrobial bioassays using the disc-diffusion method against 3 bacterial strains and 1 fungal strain. According to the results obtained, 6 extracts out of 18 showed antibacterial activity for tested Gram-positive bacteria and 1 active against Gram-negative bacteria. Two extracts showed activity against the pathogenic fungus strain. Extracts from some plants were active against tested bacterial as well as fungal species. TLC-based bioautographic study was carried out to identify the corresponding active bands which is useful for active compound isolation. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate extracts were subjected to evaluate alpha-amylase inhibitory activity where three extracts out of six extracts showed moderate inhibitory activity for alpha-amylase with IC50 ranging 8–30%.

Experiments relating to bioassay, phytochemical screening and bio-control of obnoxious aquatic weed i.e., water hyacinth were conducted in Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) laboratory. Bioassay was performed from the methanolic and aqueous extracts obtained by hot and cold percolation method that. The antibacterial and antifungal effects were performed against 11 clinical bacteria (2 gram positive and 9 gram negative) and 7 phytopathogenic fungi using agar well diffusion method. The pattern of inhibition varied with different extracts and the micro-organism tested. The soxhlet methanolic extract showed activity against 54.45% of bacteria and 57.14% fungi while cold methanolic extract showed activity against 45.45 % bacteria and 42.85% fungi employed. Similarly, hot aqueous extract showed activity against 18.18% bacteria and 42.85% fungi while in cold aqueous extraction, the activity was null and 57.14% against bacteria and fungi respectively. The methanolic fraction proved more effective than cold aqueous extract showing more antibacterial activity while cold aqueous extract showed comparably better result in different fungi employed. The most susceptible organisms were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Sclerotium rolfsii, and Fusarium moniliforme. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of different extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, reducing compounds, polyoses and saponins. The GC-MS analysis shows the presence of Phenols and Carotenoids as the bio-active compounds in the test plant. In regards to bio-control, the propagation of this weed was found to be totally checked within 21 days after the application of aqueous lechate of Lantana camara (1-3%), while that was checked within a month by the supplementation of young twigs powder of Ageratina adenophorum (7%). The synthesis of several metal complexes of d-block elements of hexadecanoic acid (palmitic acid) and its antimicrobial activity was reported in this study. UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy studies were used to characterize and confirm the produced metal complexes by the shift in the absorbance and the formation of M-O linkage. The X-ray diffraction method was mainly used to examine the crystallographic faces of the complexes based on the transition metals. Thermal gravimetric investigation revealed that all metal palmitate complexes had high thermal stability in the range of 250-300°C. The metal complexes of hexadecanoic acid were examined for microbicidal activity against diverse bacterial strains and fungal pathogens using the agar well diffusion method. The copper palmitate complex presented excellent antibacterial activity among the other metal complexes. These outcomes suggest of using fatty acid metal complexes as a suitable candidate in several biomedical applications.

Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) solms and Pistia stratiotes (L.) are two invasive weed aquatic plants that have been traditionally known as “water hyacinth” and “Jalkumbhi” respectively. They are commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine which possesses diuretic, antidiabetic, antidermatophytic, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. The present study was carried out to estimate the total phytochemicals such as phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acids and antioxidant activity. The presence of various phytochemicals in the plants reveals that these plants may be good source for the production of new drugs for various ailments.
