Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) solms and Pistia stratiotes (L.) are two invasive weed aquatic plants that have been traditionally known as “water hyacinth” and “Jalkumbhi” respectively. They are commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine which possesses diuretic, antidiabetic, antidermatophytic, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. The present study was carried out to estimate the total phytochemicals such as phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acids and antioxidant activity. The presence of various phytochemicals in the plants reveals that these plants may be good source for the production of new drugs for various ailments.

Background: Litsea angulata is a plant species belonging to Lauraceae family that is distributed throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, and New Guinea. The seeds have been traditionally used by local people in Kalimantan, Indonesia for the treatment of boils; however, there is no information about the potency of its branch, bark and leaves yet. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant, antimicrobial activity as well as the phytochemical constituent of Litsea angulata branch, bark, and leaves. Methods: Extraction was performed by successive maceration method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvent. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The antimicrobial activity using the 96 well-plate microdilution broth method against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans. Results: Based on the phytochemical analysis, it showed that extract of L. angulata contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, and coumarin. The results showed that all extracts of plant samples displayed the ability to inhibit DPPH free radical formation and all tested microorganisms. Conclusions: L. angulata contains secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, carotenoids, and coumarin. The antioxidant activity on different plant extracts was a range as very strong to weak capacity. All extracts in this study could inhibit the growth of S. aureus and S. mutans.

The aim of this research is to identify and to inventory water plants in Hanjalutung Lake,Petuk Ketimpun Village, Jekan Raya District, Palangka Raya City. This research was conducted from December 2017 to January 2018. Sampling was carried out in 3 (three) stations, namely inlet ,middle and outlet. The tool used for aquatic plants 2 x 2 m transect.The results of research aquatic plants found in the waters of Lake Hanjalutung 7 (seven) types namely Kiambang (Salvinia molesta), gerigit/bite (Leersia hexandra), Cat Tail Grass (Utricularia aurea), Para Grass (Cyperus platystylis), Water Hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes ), Kiapu (Pistia stratiotes) dan Ketanan (Polygonum sp).

Microalgae are considered one of the most promising raw materials for the development of high value products for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetic industries, as well as being potential sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals for human consumption. Hence, the present research focuses extraction of antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds from Scenedesmus subspicatus using solvents of different polarities. Different solvents such as ethanol, methanol, butanol, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and water were used to extract compounds from the green microalgae S. subspicatus and then they were examined for phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties. In vitro free radical quenching and total antioxidant activity of extracts were investigated with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl and compared with catequin and gallic acid as positive controls. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated in gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Aqueous extracts and dimethyl sulfoxide presented better performance in phytochemical analysis. This result showed consistency in the sequential tests. The antioxidant activity was also better using the two solvents cited above. The extracts acetone, water, and dimethyl sulfoxide showed ability to inhibit the growth of Bacillus subtilis. However, only dimethyl sulfoxide inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Use of the aqueous extract, proven its effectiveness, is an economic protocol and avoids the use of toxic substances.

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive aquatic weed causing serious threats to water ecosystems throughout the world. Recently, considerable attention has been given at harvesting the plant for practical uses. An experiment on the bioactivity of water hyacinth was conducted using the soxhlet extraction (hot method) and cold percolation method in chloroform and ethanol in order to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the plant. Plant samples were also analyzed for the presence of major pharmacologically active compounds. The antimicrobial assay was performed using well diffusion method against nine different clinical bacterial strains and six phytopathogenic fungal strains. The chloroform hot extract showed activity against 22.22% (Zone of Inhibition, ZOI < 13mm) bacteria and 66.66% (ZOI < 12mm) fungi; while the cold extract showed activity against 50% (ZOI < 13mm) fungi, but no activity against bacteria. Similarly, the ethanol hot extract showed activity against 77.77% (ZOI < 19mm) bacteria and 66.66% (ZOI < 20mm) fungi, while the cold extract showed activity against 77.77% (ZOI < 10mm) bacteria and 50% (ZOI < 14mm) fungi. The ethanolic hot and cold extract proved to be far better than the chloroform fraction showing more antibacterial activity, while they share the same value and possess same effectiveness against the different fungi. Chemical analysis indicated that the major components in these extracts were saponins, polyoses, alkaloid salts, and reducing compounds. The research had been conducted of the isolation of flavonoid compounds from water hyacinth plants (Eichhornia crassipes) and antioxidant activity test by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. This research starts from maceration of water hyacinth with ethanol solvent. Ethanol extract was hydrolyzed with HCl. Flavonoid separation is carried out by column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography. The obtained isolates were analyzed by UV vis spectrophotometer and FTIR spectrophotometer. Antioxidant activity was carried out by DPPH method. Flavonoid isolates were obtained as heavy as 4.5 mg (0.006%). The results of the analysis of flavonoid isolates A4a with UV vis spectrophotometer appear at a wavelength of 368 nm (band I) and 260 nm (band II). The results of the analysis with FTIR shown that the isolates had functional groups O-H, aliphatic C-H, CH3, C =O, aromatic C = C, and C-O ether, it was suspected that flavonoid isolates had a basic structure of quercetin 7-methyl ether compounds. The results of antioxidant activity test of flavonoid isolates shown IC50 price of 254.66 mg / L

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes períodos de chuva ocorridos após a aplicação do herbicida imazapyr, em sua eficiência de controle sobre plantas de Pistia stratiotes e Eichhornia crassipes. Foram estudadas chuvas de 10 mm, aplicadas durante 5', em diferentes períodos de tempo (0h, 2h, 4h, 6h, 8h, 12h, 24h e não simulação de chuva) após a aplicação de imazapyr, na formulação Arsenal NA, a 250 g i.a. ha-1(1,0 L p.c. ha-1). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. As plantas foram avaliadas visualmente aos 7, 14, 21, 28 e 35 dias após a aplicação (DAA), sendo os resultados obtidos submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F e as médias dos tratamentos comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (p<0,05). A ocorrência chuvas em até 6 horas após a aplicação do herbicida imazapyr, em plantas de P. stratiotes, afetou negativamente sua eficiência de controle e, chuvas após intervalos acima de 8 horas não influenciaram no controle. The experiment had completely randomized design with four replications. Plants were evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after application (DAA), and the results submitted to analysis of variance by F test and treatment means compared by Tukey's test (p <0. 05). The occurrence of rainfall up to 6 hours after herbicide application, plants of P. stratiotes, negatively affected its efficiency and control; rainfall intervals over 8 hours had no effect in control. The present investigation reports the optimization of process parameters for biogas production from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). The different parameters like particle size, inoculum concentration, incubation temperature, metal ions and pH were optimized for biogas production. Maximum biogas was observed with water hyacinth of 1cm size, 40 % inoculum concentration. The temperature of 45°C along with neutral pH i.e. 7 was found to be most suitable for biogas production in the presence of manganese chloride (0.2 mM). Under optimized conditions, 44.9 l biogas/kg water hyacinth, 360.09 l/kg total solids and 397.95 l biogas/kg volatile solids were produced in a period of 40 days. The water hyacinth has proven to be a good source of biogas production and thus can be utilized as a potential feedstock for the biogas production.
